Snap! I'm mixed race - also a black mother and a white father. But it's just so much easier to call myself black, especially as being mixed race you're naturally closer to being black than white.Rokar333 said:Why specifically African-American, are you saying that aren't any black people anywhere else on the planet?
Nitpicking aside, I'm mixed black and white and appear to have a healthy tan (normally an oxymoron). I hate filling out the "other" option in forms and whatnot, so I just fill in black; because my mom is black. If my dad weren't as white as he is(read: very), I would probably be a lot darker skinned than I am now, but because my dad is such a pasty pale, I just look like I have a great tan.
I sort of understand though if the poster is from the US. There are some black people in the US who seem to get offended being called black. So, in America anyway, African American is just the default thing to say unless the person you're speaking to tells you otherwise. It just bugs me because it's technically incorrect in most uses.TheHitcher said:Snap! I'm mixed race - also a black mother and a white father. And the generalisation of races in America is just silly. The term for blacks being African-American is probably one of the worst. For a start, there are black people living outside the US (e.g. I live in England). Also, being African and Carribean aren't the same thing. And I'm Carribean black rather than African black. >_>
People should think before making polls like this.
Actually, they do [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French-canadian].Clashero said:I don't call myself an Spanish-Italo-Argentine, and I'm sure people from Quebec aren't Franco-Canadians.
Is your Russian friend actually from Siberia though? Cos if he's from the European part of Russia, then it doesn't sound so justifiable. Still, I'm right with you on the Hispanic thing.Clashero said:In fact, I was friends with a Russian guy when I was living in the US, and we both hated the ethnicity system. I made sure to check "Caucasian" (if it weren't for my nationality and accent, you wouldn't be able to tell I'm from South America), and he always checked Asian, just to mess with everyone. It was perfectly justifiable, too.
