Charon. He's awesome to have around, good shot with anything I give him and looks really good in Buttons wig.

I only have Dogmeat. Followers feel (mostly) pointless. In FO1 I had Ian, Dogmeat and that guy from Junktown and found them all pointless. Needless to say they died in a battle.

I dont, i hate people following me around. I work alone, in stealth. Everyone else is just getting in my way or absorbing bullets.
Charon is actually good for stealth assuming you don't give him power armor.

Star Paladin Cross
Mostly becuase I never found a friendly ally to a Good karma player before she came along.
Though I'd rather haveSydney as an ally outside of the one quest.

Fawkes was the only one I tried and only for 30 minutes or so. Fallout 3's companion system seems fairly pointless since you don't get experience for kills if you don't deal damage to them. Companions used to be a way to make charismatic characters viable in combat.

Went from dogmeat, to Paladin Cross (she died 5 minutes later but I reloaded and told her to leave), and now I have Fawkes. I always had long breaks between partners though.

Fawkes. I've seen him kill all of the deathclaws in Old Olney without my help. He is sort of a pain when I want to be stealthy. What's the point of 100 stealth when your follower is a huge behemoth?

Yeah, I stuck with just dogmeat and even that proved to be a save/load fest because they made him so aggressive I hope if they ever include him again they make him a little easier to command. Like give him a stance menu or something so you can make him passive or aggressive. Actually that wouldn't be a bad idea for any of the followers in games like this. Then again I suppose it's possible they have done it already in the expansions, I don't own any of them.
