Personal Favourite? Easily Soul Calibur 2.
Nostalgia trip and really tight controls and nice coloured graphics. It's one of my favourite fighting games of all time.

Honourable mention: Tekken Tag 2.
For reasons already mentioned in this thread.

Least favourite? Eh, probably Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
I'm not saying that because of the controls being bad or anything. It's just that i personally had very little fun with it. I've never had a very good relationship with 2D fighters, i prefer the 3D ones. Since i play with a regular controller i find the movements and everything to be very clunky and unwieldy

Dishonourable mention: Naruto Ninja Storm Generations
For being a waste of my money.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest BlazBlue. It's the only fighting game, besides Smash Bros, that I've ever been good at. Even then, Smash Bros is more of a party game-style brawler than a fighting game. Not that it's any worse because of it, of course.

BlazBlue contains what is probably my favourite character to play as in any fighting game ever: Lambda-11. Even Nu-13, with her incessant overpowered-ness, doesn't quite give me the same level of satisfaction; Lambda's attacks are slower, but they feel like they have more weight to them. Additionally, I find Lambda's aggressive, yet deliberate, combos easier to pull off than Nu-13's "Oh, I'm just gonna spam projectiles and teleport all over the place" playstyle. There has never been another game that has captured that specific balance of mobility, power and variety, even at the cost of defense, that I love so much. Additionally, I absolutely adore Lambda's mix of melee and projectiles; she has more useful projectiles than melee attacks, but has some good melee options to fall back on in close quarters.

Where's Blazblue and Guilty gear? What about Arcana Heart or Persona 4 Arena or maybe uhh...something not capcom or capcom-inspired at all? (Skullgirls is like a marvel 2-inspired game with GG elements)

Yeah there's not much space but why not evenly spread out. 1 capcom game, 1 namco bandai game, 1 arc system works game, 1 Examu game, 1 SNK game, 1 neatherrealms game, you know what I mean? I see no point to having 6 capcom games, some of which belong in the same series too.

Also, Darkstalkers 3 was made in like 1994.

Persona 4 Arena and BlazBlue. I think the P4A fighting mechanics are actually perfect, they allow people like me who have all the ways in and pressure strats but aren't going full swag combo level (because that stuff is annoying and detracts from the fun) to do well alongside those "lol 80% combos get rekt" people. Glad they're still lurking on UMVC3 and Skullgirls for the most part...

What i'm saying is that combos aren't everything in that game, in fact they're quite subdued in importance compared to other fighting games.

BlazBlue is fun but purple throws are one of the worst game mechanics ever. What was the thought process there?

"Hey you know what would be a good idea? If someone could throw while comboing someone isn't that cool!"

Not like it's a free reset, no not even that. It's a reset before the combo has even ended. Yeah you could counter throw like usual but considering the latency online and the surprise of it you're never going to stop it.

I got into BB in the worst possible way too. The only people online were people who had like 500-1000 games with Ragna or Hakumen or Jin and I hadn't even learned all my moves yet. Y'know how people say you learn something by losing? Yeah no. Not when there's such a vast skill gap. I get locked in a corner and die whether I press buttons or not. Thank god Mu-12 exists or i'd be totally screwed.
How are combos in Persona any less integral than in other games? Most chars die in 2 good combos and there's bursts, making it 3 combos. That brings it to basically marvel levels with 1-touch death combos and 3 chars needing to be dead, adding up to 3 combos as well. What's different is how easy or hard it is to land those starting hits. (in persona you need to actually hitconfirm appropriately to achieve your high damage, in marvel you do not)

How do "swag combos" remove fun anyhow? Landing that hype combo you worked on for a month in a real match is one of the most satisfying experiences in fighting games ever. That's a common consensus and most people who have actually done it would agree with me.

In Blazblue purple throws are extremely slow , you have over half a second to react to them and tech them. As for the reason they're there, it's so that people are awake and aren't mindlessly mashing while being comboed but instead pay attention and look out for throws.

In actual high level matches games you'll almost never see purple throws because of how easy they are to escape. That you fought people using them means they weren't good at all, even if they may have had 500-1000 games (a number of games that can be amassed in a week).

Lastly, they're not really a "reset", the most damage a normal grab does is 2k and then the combo usually drops. Only a few select chars get more damage from purple grabs and against those you should be doubly careful and attentive to your reactions. If you're getting 720d by Tager mid-combo left and right, that just means you have to work on your throw-teching.

Basically, the risk of losing out on your wakeup pressure if they tech your purple grab makes purple grabs not worth the risk, even though they may add a free 2k to your combo. They're just that easy to tech.

As for the part about learning by losing, that's true as well. You may not have FUN, but you will improve. Just do this, play someone around your level 10 times, then go play someone way better than you 30 times, then go play the first person again for another 10 times and compare how you do. You'll surely be satisfied with yourself by the difference in your performance.

from 2000 on up? you wouldn't have enough room in five polls for all the titles. XD

For 2d fighters, it goes to blazblue. primarily for the story and diverse cast of characters, but also for the care Arksys puts into character balance and making all play styles equally valid. Now if they could just figure out how to get Tager off the bottom tier. XD

for 3d: tekken, dark ressurection. this game was a bloody revolution for handheld fighters. I was in the navy when it got released, and the game may as well have been crack on board my ship. Everyone under the age of 30 had a copy, and we spent hours and hours practicing and fighting each other.

Tager's solid mid in Chronophantasma. (which is out in Japan, you can find matches of him)

Amane and Izayoi are the current bottom tiers. Kokonoe is the reigning SSSSS tier and Bang is still awesome.

For me my all-time favourite would probably be Tekken 5.
It's one of the reasons why I never truly left the genre and was in fact one of the driving factors to get me back into it. I absolutely loved the amount of content that was in it! An infinite arcade mode with progressively harder battles, a brawler-style mini campaign as Jin, campaign modes for each of the 32(!) characters, full character customization (unlocked through the aforementioned Arcade and Brawler modes) and an Arcade History mode where you could play all the PS1 Tekken games as well as StarBlade! When it comes to fighting games I look for Offline content, since I never really go online and I still can't find a fighting game which offers me as much content as Tekken 5 did!

Plus it still has one of my favourite game songs of all time:

Really wish I could locate my disc for that game... Should probably also get around to playing Tekken 6...

Until then, I'll stick with BlazBlue Continuum Shift EXTEND. (Until Chronophantasma gets released anyway...)

That would explain the lack of BlazBlue... Though, it's made up with Skull Girls, so I can't blame you for trying to list the "big ones", at least...

Anyway, it's a tie between BlazBlue and Skull Girls, both fighting games I originally bought on a whim and ended up enjoying them both before my friends joined in on the enjoyment, especially Skull Girls...

Though, I choose BlazBlue over Skull Girls story-wise the same way I choose Skull Girls over BlazBlue for... uh... actually being able to pull off specials with just the PS3 controller easier?

(Moral of the story: Don't make me choose, dammit! ...Even though I did buy Skull Girls for a second time on Steam while waiting for the next BlazBlue game to come out in the US for the PS3...)

My favourite from 2000 up? thats almost impossible for me to say because there have been so many excellent fighters from then on I would say Soul Calibur but that was 1999 over here, Soul Calibur V would be the one but the character selection is horrible and the single player mode was disappointing customisation was fun as hell though and the combat was excellent.

I have probably played SC2 the most even though its my least favourite SC game in the series (still love it though) Ill just cheat and say the SC series is my favourite.

Least favourite is a bit easier and thats all of Nether Realms output now to be fair MK9 and Injustice are quite fun and are miles better than what Nether Realm have done before but for a company that has been making fighters for so long they are pretty poorly made in comparison to pretty much all of the opposition and the visuals and animations are horrendous.

I have also been slightly dissapointed by Capcoms output as of late I dont think they make bad fighters but the art they have used for characters and the backgrounds has been very poor in my eyes and if a fighter looks bad then I dont enjoy playing it and vice versa (ofc the gameplay has to be up to snuff as well).

Arc however have really stepped up their game in the last few years my dream fighter would be them taking the cast of FFVII and doing something similar to what they did with Persona (which is a game I also really love).

Im still waiting for Darkstalkers 4 which will never happen because not enough people bought Darkstalkers 3 when they re-re-released it again. I really dont get their logic imagine if Mircosoft released Killer Instinct to gauge customer interest in the new (unfinished) KI game im pretty sure hardly anyone would have bought it.

Shoutouts to KOFXIII (so so good and looks gorgeous) DOA5(U) (just an amazing game and by far the best DOA game ever made and strikes a great balance between high level play and accessibility) and Skullgirls (great fighter and new IP by a small team and Squigly is great)

I voted for Tekken tag, but in my book the greatest fighting game is Tekken 5 one of the most balanced(except for Devil Jin) and one of the most complex combo systems out there.

I've gotta go with Tekken Tag 2 out of that list. I've been a Tekken fan since the beginning and, while I don't feel that Tag 2 is the best Tekken game, it's still damn fun. It's also less popular than most fighters so can probably use the props.
If you don't mind me asking who's your duo? I use Forest Law and Dr. Bosconovitch, always fun to play that game in a group sometimes.
I tend to go with Hwoarang and Xiaoyu, though I mix some P-Jack in when I feel like it. Certainly not the strongest of teams, but it's basically what I played way back in Tag 1. While I still follow the series, I never really found myself getting attached to any of the newer characters. The new vampire loli girl they are introducing could be cool though.. maybe?

Oh, CvS2.. why won't they re-release you? I'd kill for a CvS2 HD remake/re-release.

Also, to the OP, I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. Most of your vitriol seems to be stemming from having difficulty winning as well as a mistaken belief that you need a fight stick to compete in SF4. Any fighting game is pretty tough to find wins in if you're not that good at it and/or are not practiced at it. Also, there is absolutely no need at all to play with a fight stick to be able to win. Several of the top SF4 players in the world are solely pad players. Sticks may have more convenient button lay outs (and the 360 pad is considered by pretty much any fighting game player to be terrible for any fighting game), but it's really about what you put the time in using. If you're losing to better players, it's not because of their controller or yours, it's because they are better than you are.
That's the thing though, I played on gamepad and constantly lost. I play on fightstick I win much more often against the people who just beat me on gamepad. Perhaps it's just me, I just feel like there's an advantage to it. I put about a days worth into both and I've owned a fightstick for a vastly shorter period of time than my gamepad. Perhaps it's just me, but when it comes to Sf2&4 i feel like fightstick has a stronger advantage.
Well, if you were using the 360 pad before, then a stick is definitely better. But yeah, it just sounds like you happen to clikc with using a stick. That's cool as many people find the transition to stick ackward in any game if they didn't grow up with fighting games in the arcade. It's definitely not a requirement though.

It has been re-released its 8 pounds on the PSN store but I dont think it has any extras so no HD and no online basically a very lazy port of a friggin amazing game. I just rebought the PS2 version not so long ago after having all my games stolen, im sure CVS3 will be out soon actually it wont because like Darkstalkers 4 its an idea that makes sense (as long as they dont go crazy on the budget) and Capcom havent had that in years. (and yeah I know SNK said they would never work with Capcom again).

Yeah, you can see a few of these games showing up even though technically they were made before 2000, but I'm counting them in mainly because they got to see a re-release later, so they count.
I'm sorry I couldn't add more fighting games like Blazeblue, KOF, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat and a few other mainly because there isn't a enough room on the poll to do so.

Street fighter 4 any time of the day (never understood why so many people feel the need to bash that game 24\7). I've gotten into blazblue as well and it's my second favorite 2D fighter, sadly the combos are just to damn long and the footsie game ain't that great. Still hakumen alone is enough to make that game awesome hes the perfect character for me. His combos aren't 100 hits long but sadisfying to pull of and he is one of the few characters who has single attacks that actually do damage, lastly hes just so damn hype when finally build up your meter and completly wreck someones face dealing 2 times theyr damage in half the hits. I dont realy enjoy games like mvc or the new KI where single attacks are practically meaningless. Sadly thats where fighters seem to going right now, noone dares to put out fighters anymore where you can't combo anything into 80 hits.

I also generally oppose putting 2d and 3d fighters against each other, pretty meaningles comparison if you ask me. If you do this you no longer compare games your technically comparing genres.

I've never been very into fighting games. I enjoy playing them with friends, but I absolutely suck at them. I don't really have much understanding of their mechanics other than "learn some button combinations to do cool stuff".

The fighting games I've enjoyed the most over the years were the Smash Bros. Series, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Soul Calibur 2. Mortal Kombat 9 and Injustice were also lots of fun.

I have fond memories of Smash Bros. Melee in particular because I played it tons with my cousins/friends back in high school. Whenever I selected Fox people would cringe... actually they still do. I'm honestly really looking forward to Smash Bros. 4, I only hope they have less clone characters.

I am not a big Fighting game fan, but there are plenty that I really did enjoy. SMB Melee and Soul Caliber were two of my favorites quality wise.

However one I really do have fond memories of is Bloody Roar Primal Fury. That was one I loved when I was younger. Maybe its the nostalgia talking but the news that the 'Bloody Roar 5' wasn't actually happening really bummed me out.

I feel this adresses the first paragraph sufficiently and that it makes a fair point. Why there need to be 6 capcom games when there's limited space? Why not spread it to one game per company since there's not much space to work with. If there was infinite space then to over-represent one company would be somewhat more acceptable but here it makes zero sense.

Why list marvel 2 and marvel 3? Isn't 1 marvel game enough when we don't have much space and are (presumably) trying to offer a wide array of games for people to choose from? The fact that there's not much space makes this make even less sense.

Poll doesn't cover my interest.

Far and away, Soul Calibur IV, it looks amazing, very responsive and tactical gameplay, couldn't play another fighting game after playing it basically, tried some others but they just fell down in comparison, don't know why the poll isn't divided into series instead of individual titles.

Ehhhh....Soul Calibur 4 I guess? I don't know much about the series in terms of competitive balance but 4 has been a lot of fun. Yes I heard Hilde is broken as is the Apprentice but whatever, it's good fun.

Either that or Capcom vs SNK2, that's a damn fun game.
