This is mostly for my own benefit.... I'm currently on a Sci-Fi trip and have been watching nothing but Sci-Fi TV shows (mind you... not SYFY.. whatever that is).

Basically, what are your favorite Sci-Fi shows?

Maybe you can recommend something that I haven't even thought to check out.

I started a few years back with Star Trek TOS. I thought nothing could be better until I hit The Next Generation... which was just 10 times more awesome. After that high point, I was afraid to try any of the other Star Treks because I'm almost positive that they can't live up to TNG.

I quickly checked out the 14 episodes of Firefly to bring me down from the Star Trek high... and all it did was make me INCREDIBLY sad that there were only 14 episodes...

I then checked out Battlestar Galactica... first the original 70's show which was fun and interesting. Then that goofy season in the Galactica 1980 which was pretty terrible.

The Re-imagined Battlestar series was right up there in TNG... one of the best Sci-Fi shows I've ever seen.

I'm on the 4th season of Farscape right now. I'm enjoying this very much though it seems to have dropped off a little after the superior 3rd season. Not looking forward to it ending and now I need a new show to replace it.

I was thinking maybe Stargate SG-1... a lot of episodes to keep me busy for a while.

*** No need to stick to the list on the poll. I included an "other" option. I just listed what I'm familiar with. I want recommendations!

Torchwood. Alternately Doctor Who. But I actually like the spin-off more. Second is Stargate. The original series, not Atlantis or... Ugh... Universe.

My personal fav would have to be Babylon 5. I own the entire series, plus all the T.V. movies. The new Battlestar Galactica was great, Farscape was awesome, Sliders is pretty cool, both the old and the new series of Doctor Who are great fun, and Star Trek: TNG & DS9 were fantastic as well, but there is something about B5 that just appeals to me, something that elevates it above those other shows. I just really love it whole piles.

Doctor Who is my personal favorite and Sanctuary is after that.

Babylon 5 would have to be third, I haven't seen it in years, but that's some of the good.

I had a very hard time choosing between Battlestar and Firefly. They're both fantastic, they're both, equally, my favourite TV shows of all time and neither has a bad episode. In the end I chose Battlestar simply because it's longer and, thus, had the opportunity to be explored to it's fullest potential which Firefly, sadly, didn't
I'm also a huge fan of Star Trek: TOS, but who isn't?

Also: I'm planning on buying the box-set of Farscape. Can anyone tell me how awesome it is just so I have reassurance that my money will be well spent? Thanks!

You've already hit the high notes: Firefly and BSG. Doctor Who absolutely has some high notes, ("Water of Mars" and "The Library") amongst a lot of campy fun.
I would highly recommend Stargate Universe. It takes a lot of heat for not being like SG-1 or SG-Atlantis, but it's not suppose to be like those series. In point of fact, it pokes fun at those series frequently. If you enjoyed the process of 'getting to know' the characters of Firefly and the command decisions of BSG, absolutely check out SGU. Just remember, it's not trying to be either show of those shows. It has its own Destiny.

Unbelievebly Awesome! It does a great job of combining the humour and character variety of Firefly with the grand story of BSG (though far less pretentious). Also, almost everything is done with practical effects (and Muppets!) so even though it is now 12 years old, it still looks fantastic. The character arcs are fantastic and believable and it has some of the coolest villans in sci-fi. Buy it, watch it and be annoyed you didn't find it sooner! The only bad part is that they were forced to shove and entire seasons worth of story into a 3hr miniseries. Just a warning, the earlier seasons would be better titles as a Sci-Fi Comedy/Action. If oyu go into it expecting dark and serious like BSG you will be disappointed.

Edit:

I managed to get to the mid-season break of SG:U before I gave up on it. While I appreciate the urge to go darker and edgier, using the Stargate title would have put a lot of people off giving it a try and then annoyed those that did watch it for not being more like SG1/Atlantis. Personally, I stopped watching it because it became obvious htere wasn't a single likeable person among the crew.

The reimagining of Battlestar Galactica, bar none. The others may be more popular but what BSG had that puts it beyond its contemporaries was a real, specific grasp on the weird zeitgeist of modern society. Something that no other show has, imo, been able to achieve.

In the end, I think it lies on the specificity of how far it dared to go. The Mythology didn't explode, it didn't become a parody of itself, and it ended its run at the right timee and it didn't overstay its welcome.

Awesome, thanks! I'll start saving right now. Although I hate being annoyed that I didn't find things sooner. I only bought Firefly a year ago and never watched Star Trek or Doctor Who when I was a kid. All of this I regret but better late than never, I guess

Where the fuck is Red Dwarf on that poll?
Sure it's a comedy...but come on.
For the choices given, Firefly followed by Stargate SG-1

Battlestar Galactica for me. I loved it from start to finish. It had superb acting and some great (but a little over-used) space battles.

I was never able to get into Star Trek (not any of the series, nor any of the movies). I don't know, it just doesn't grip me for some reason. Firefly had a bunch of actors I like, but there's something about Joss Whedon's style that has always kept me from enjoying his work.

I don't really like procedural shows, which is mostly what The X-Files was. The whole "monster of the week" thing got old quick. The same goes for Doctor Who, except I can't get over the cheesy effects of that show either.

I haven't watched the others in the poll.

There are some other ones I do like, though. Eureka is entertaining (and now I look like a hypocrite, because it's 90% procedural. It's an exception, I guess). And then there's Lost, which I loved almost as much as BSG. A lot of people hate seasons 3 and 4, but I can't see why. Ben Linus, people! The dynamics between him and John Locke were outstanding.
