The Doctor is great, but you have to give the show a bit of time to grow on you, at least that's the way it had to be in my case. Farscape and Firefly are, I think, my two favorite Sci-Fi shows of all time. I quite liked Star Trek: Enterprise, especially the third and fourth seasons, it's really a wonder how people didn't seem to enjoy it as much as the other Star Trek series. Scott Bakula makes a great captain and a total badass. When I was a kid I used to watch a lot of Andromeda. It's based on another Gene Rodenberry story and it has its moments, although I can't whole-heartedly recommend it, since it really gets pretty boring and absurd later on. But I guess if you're in a deep trip it can alleviate some of the hunger. If you don't mind some dated CGI, the Starship Troopers animated series is pretty cool as well. The Outer Limits, although being in the same vein as The Twilight Zone, has more core sci-fi episodes and some of them are really awesome. It has a darker tone, pretty unforgiving at times, think Phillip K. Dick.

EDIT: I remembered an old gem, a short-lived series called "Earth 2". I really loved that one, back in the day, as it were.

I'll have to echo some of the other posters with the awesomeness of the newer BSG. I'm also a HUGE Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fan. I definitely recommend it.

I'm seeing a lack of love for Fringe on here. I would also say Doctor Who, but I've been ninja's several times already. Sooo, going by the poll options it'd be The X-Files but currently Fringe is winning my favour.

...until Doctor Who returns of course.

Also: I'm planning on buying the box-set of Farscape. Can anyone tell me how awesome it is just so I have reassurance that my money will be well spent? Thanks!
I'm almost done with Farscape. It's a strange show, mostly because it just has odd science fiction... Star Trek tried to make things plausible, and create technology that might actually exist. Farscape is basically, "think of the craziest junk we can come up with". But it's more about the characters anyway, which it is pretty good for... John Crichton being a fish out of water, human. Oh... and hopefully you can stand a few muppets. You could try sampling the first episode maybe? Maybe Fancast (still that name?) has some episodes... I've also seen people post them on Youtube, somehow. I think it's a cool show. If you're a sci-fi fan, it's worth checking out.

No love for the Twilight Zone, the greatest of the greatest. Give me that black and white marathon 8 days a week.
I was going to add The Twilight Zone, but ran out of room... and was curious if anyone would bring it up.

My favorites have to be Firefly, Stargate SG-1 (with Richard Dean Anderson), And Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (To hell with what anyone else says, I like Sisko)
I love Star Trek, but I may hold off on any of the post-TNG shows for a while. I want to try some different shows first... plus I'm afraid no one can replace Picard.

This is mostly for my own benefit.... I'm currently on a Sci-Fi trip and have been watching nothing but Sci-Fi TV shows (mind you... not SYFY.. whatever that is).
I voted for Babylon 5, but honestly I was torn. Babylon 5 and Farscape are both so good.

Although, if you go with Babylon 5, I'd recommend not watching Season 5 until after some sort of break from the rest of the series. That is, watch seasons 1-4, then stop, watch something else, and then come back to season 5. That last season is less awful if viewed with some distance from the rest of the show. Also, it should be noted that all plot points are resolved in Season 4 because the creator thought the show was getting canceled and wanted to finish up.

Sci-fi is kind of a broad cover, but lets see...

The pinnacle of science fiction television as science fiction was understood in the literary world - that is, science fiction as a way to explore abstract ideas and hypotheticals - was Star Trek: The Next Generation. The first and most of the second (and even some of the third) season were, to put it mildly, kinda shitty, but it had developed into something extraordinary by its closure.

For overall best sci-fi drama though, it's actually a bit of a four-way tie between the new Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Cowboy BeBop, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. The latter is very soft on the scale, and both the latter two are animated, so if we discount them on that count, we come up with BSG and Firefly.

In a competition for my favorite - the one I'd most prefer to sit down and watch - between BSG, Firefly, and TNG... I don't know, it'd vary based on my mood. They're just so different. I guess any given episode of Firefly stands a better chance of being good than any given episode of BSG or TNG, so I guess I'd have to pick it as a winner on that count.

So Firefly it is, then.

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised DS9 doesn't get more love. It was just barely edged out in my case, but it's still one of my favorites too. Such well realized characters...

Tripping the Rift.

Why yes, I did just go there.

... But in a more serious answer, Star Trek: TNG.

Ha... That's pretty lame. At least Farscape knew they were getting canceled before finishing the last season. I'm enjoying Farscape... so if you're torn between them... maybe I'll check out Babylon 5 before I jump into Stargate.. since it looks shorter.

I imagine it might be like going stright from the original Battlestar Galactica, into Galactica 1980, which I did... That was pretty bad, but didn't ruin the original for me. But I guess it would suck more if it has a continuous plot that's already resolved in the previous season.

I missed it too, but instead fanboy'd for Space: Above and Beyond.
You're both right.. and I apologize... I actually watched about a season and a half of Fringe... and I was enjoying it. But I was away from it too long and decided to wait a while before jumping back into it. Let them have a ton of episodes that I can just watch back-to-back... that's been my approach for the shows I listed.

But yes, Fringe should not be forgotten.

This was actually my intent... I like that Sci-Fi is broad. I wanted to keep it that way so that I get a lot of recommendations.

I know a lot of people like firefly, but it had only one season for a reason, while Stargate has 17 in total, also for a reason (of being awesome)

OT: My fav is Stargate Atlantis then SG1, and while it's still under SG1 Universe started to grow on me (too bad it got canceled :( ), then goes Battlestar Galactica (which I finished watching like yesterday), and only then goes Firefly... but I've only seen a few episodes so I cant really judge.

P.S. both Star Wars and Star Trek suck compared to Stargate. Yeah yeah I know they defined SciFi and all but I really don't like them that much (especially Star Trek)

I love Firefly, but nothing beats the Twilight Zone. I'm up to only about half way through season three but my mind has been blown again and again by them. I hope the outer limits and the eighties season are up to scratch as well.

I loved Farscape

Partly the sheer quality of the effects and aliens (there will never be a better alien on TV than Pilot), but mostly because of it's capacity to be both extremely serious and utterly barking mad at the same time.

Any episode involving Harvey tended to tread both boards with aplomb.
Also, Claudia Black, in leather, with a machine gun.
