But seriously, no offense, but se see no real "moral dilemma" in arbitrary scenarios like that. If we want to discuss morality for real, the scenario has to be realistic enough.

I've been away for a few days, why the hell are all these people and pets drowning all of a sudden? Is this inspired by the fact that there have been quite a few people drown in Britain recently? If so, thats in pretty bad taste.

It's the summer (for the correct hemisphere, anyway), of course more people are drowning recently. How many people you know go out for a swim in November?

To be fair, people do go out swimming in cold water for kicks, as demonstrated by this video.


And David Walliams swam the Thames in February last year for Charity.

I was just wondering why all these people drowning threads have popped up.

Sorry Mr. Random. You don't have the bonds of precious memories and love making me swim towards you. I would rather you didn't have to die but I can only save one and I love my family. I will certainly think of you often after its all said and done.

However...

I'll most likely drown trying to pull up my parents. Both of them have gained weight in the last 8 years and I don't practice swimming enough. So it looks like the river/ocean/bathtub wins.

It's not even a choice. You save that river or you're a monster who should be condemned to drowning in a drowning river which shall then be saved and so it goes

Wait, if they're drowning in a whirlpool, why would I try to save either of them? Wouldn't I just get caught in the whirlpool and drown as well?

I would make all the drowning people complete a questionnaire so that I could establish which of them was of the greatest value.

I would ask for their age and details of their medical history so that I could judge who would have the longest life expectancy.
I would need to know their educational qualifications and their employment history so that I could judge who would be most likely to make a great contribution to humanity such as discovering a cure for cancer.
I would need details of the drowning person's family and friends to see if there are more people who would be upset over their death than there would be over the death of my parent.
A criminal record background check would of course be required.

Once all this information was provided I would calculate a value score for each drowning person. I would then calculate my own value score. Next would be a risk assessment to work out my chances of surviving the rescue attempt as if my value score was greater than that of the highest scoring drowning person, there is a potential loss to the world if i were to die in the rescue attempt.

FInally if the calculations showed it to be worthwhile I would attempt to save the most valuable person.

Or....
I might just save my mum because she means a hell of a lot more to me than any stranger does.

I don't even know why people choose to use the "drowning" stuff. I mean the point is would you choose to save one or another, by adding these unnecessary contextual details people are going to say stuff like "I can't swim" or "I'm a strong swimmer so I'll save both," and miss the point.

Seeing as I still rely on my father for financial stability until I move on to college it seems rather obvious who I would save(if I could save him at all). The fact that I never decided to invest any experience into swimming I would be in as much crap as the person I'm attempting to save.

I would set up a series of high-quality movie cameras to record the suspenseful moment from numerous angles. After carefully and meticulously setting up the cameras in just the right way, I would swim heroically out to to the drownees, only to arrive too late, both of them perishing in the relentless waves.

The stranger...why.
I don't know man, my heart tells me that.

I am sure after that though...I would surly suffer mentally after losing one of my parents.

The stranger might be a young little girl's parent. I would love to save my parent but I would rather let me suffer then some other poor person.

We've had gun control, Skyrim, ME3, feminism, rape, games as art....but nothing has prepared us for family members and strangers inexplicably drowning in an area where nobody else is around to help except us

Still better than feminism and the ending fiasco. Although I wonder who will be HIM this time around.
