The majority of the music lies in two broad categories; EDM and Alternative Rock. The second 'genre' I loathe - not for it's content, but the fact it's just so broad without actually being descriptive. It seems if you have guitar and a drum set in your band you get dumped here. As for EDM - it's fairly evenly broken down into - admittedly, another broad title in-and-of-itself, but the number of sub-genres in EDM is impenetrable for a casual discussion - Drum and Bass and Dubstep. To this day, I'm still not sure how I've accumulated so much of the latter.
I'm assuming you're just using iTunes or something? Pretty much everything between hard rock and indie rock will get slapped under 'Alternative', and a lot of pop-punk or pop-rock does too. I'm not really all that picky about what band fits into what genres, but I don't like most media player organizers for that reason.

OT:
* What musical styles make up the majority of the music you own?
Likely metalcore/post-hardcore at the moment. Used to be a lot of alternative and contemporary rock, but I lost most of my old music collection when my old laptop died. Woohoo.

* Is this a good indicator of your musical preferences?
Eh... I prefer heavy music, yeah, but I like most everything that isn't R&B, hip-hop, country, big band/swing, and jazz. And all of them have their exceptions, too. Also I don't really like most black, death, or doom metal, even though I quite like symphonic black metal.
* What kind music do you wish you had more of?
That's a toughy. I'm pretty good right now considering I juggle my hard drive space like a circus performer juggles knives, but I always like a good bit of ambient soundscapes. Maybe some more industrial-electro/aggrotech like InnerPartySystem or Funker Vogt.

* Is you collection mostly digital, CD or vinyl?
I used to have tons of CDs. I managed to get a good number of them, but all of the music I actually really listen to is in a digital format.

* How much of your music have you seen live?
Zilch. Well, not entirely true, I suppose. I saw InnerPartySystem, Underoath, and Norma Jean and got a poster autographed by the lead singer of the latter.
* Anything notable that you've seen live?
See above. XD

EDIT: Oh, and right now my library is at 5,047 songs.

But the question is, does it bring the boys to the yard? Hmm, something to ponder. :p

OT: Ju-u-ust under 4K - 3942 songs right now. EDIT: Damn, I actually have more than 4k - I forgot I've not put several songs in my playlist. Oh well, not that it matters with them I have...4035 songs. Technically over 4k, but whatever voted 3-4k already and I don't feel bad :p

* What musical styles make up the majority of the music you own?

Rock and metal - a lot of older stuff - Deep Purple, Rainbow, as well as Metallica, Black Sabbath and Slayer. And of course Ronnie James Dio \m/ dude, just \m/. Then comes rap - again, older stuff - older Eminem albums (8th Mile is the last I have), Dr. Dre, N.W.A., 2pac, DMX etc. It's not all from the USA, though, I also have German rap - Sido, Bushido, Chakuza, Fler. The third place goes to techno/electronic (lumping them together) - Angerfist and Prodigy take up most of it, then it's mostly random songs, not albums or anything. And if soundtracks count, then that would take fourth place.

* Is this a good indicator of your musical preferences?

Yeah. Not as much "soundtracks" as I'm not really after it for being a soundtrack, I just like the tracks themselves. The fact that the entire soundtrack is good is a bonus. But the Crimsonland OST (it's actually two different ones) is rather rock-y, as is the Death Illustrated one. Heck, Death Illustrated is mostly pure heavy metal-ish, so yeah. But to be honest, I'll probably rate them rock/metal first, then techno/electronic and after that rap.

* What kind music do you wish you had more of?

Hmm, more rock and metal, definitely. I'll get more at some point just not immediately. I do tend to expand on that front. And more like Mirror's Edge OST. I listened to more Solar fields but it the rest of the tracks don't hit it just the right way. Still good, though, just not Mirror's Edge-like. I dunno how to describe it - Cyberbird is what I'd consider more similar

* Is you collection mostly digital, CD or vinyl?

Digital. I used to have cassette tapes. Or...like two of them. It was also very long ago. Dunno why I bring it up.

* How much of your music have you seen live?

Not a lot. Erm, none of what's in my playlist.

* Anything notable that you've seen live?

One of my friends made several beats for that one amateur (as in "not professional" not "bad") rapper and I have his tracks. Does that count?

* What would acts would you like to go see?

Have you really been far even as decided? :p I dunno, I guess Manowar or something. Alternatively, that amateur rapper I mentioned, there is several more that are sort of known just around back home. I'd love to see them live, and it's not too hard to do...assuming I'm home but away at Uni, and it doesn't seem I'll be going back soon :/

* What gigs do you wish you could have been at?

I missed several I could have technically went to Metallica few years back, I also missed Manowar and AC/DC.

Metallica are still pretty good live but Megadeth (live) sadly suck gigantic hairy fucking balls these days. I wouldn't bother with them unless they happen to be at a festival you're going to anyway.

My iTunes library has just over 3000 songs all told, but the main things I listen to are Gojira, Tool, Meshuggah, Mastodon, Muse, Opeth and Radiohead. Oh, and Animals as Leaders.

Of all the bands I've seen live I can say without a shred of doubt that Gojira are the very pinnacle, followed by Muse. Opeth are generally pretty good live too, and I'd recommend seeing Lamb of God, Rammstein, Alice in Chains and Machine Head also. Machine Head are odd 'cos I find them boring recorded, but excellent live. Slipknot tends to attract a fun atmosphere but you might get crushed, same goes for Iron Maiden... Slayer were excellent when I saw them a couple years ago, but I have no idea whether they're still worth seeing as they're sadly missing Jeff (rip) and the drummer, whose name I forget.
Airbourne are great fun live, too. I wouldn't listen to their recordings, but they're just fun in that setting.

Fuck me, not only did that make it past my quick proof-read but I read your response, figured you were pointing out that I said something stupid and couldn't see what you were referring to. I then switch tabs, read something else, checked it again and missed it again before switching tabs one more time and finally picking up on it.

That was an impressive example of why "kids, you should stay in school!".

OK, to be honest, I had a similar experience with your post. But in reverse. Read it the first time...my mind immediately blanked out as it tried to process it - read it again, same thing happened. Then I read the rest of the post, came back...still made no sense at all. When I wrote my post and read over the question again, it finally clicked what the meaning was supposed to be.

But also, I've been awake for, like...31 hours now. I'm easy to confuse.

Just over the 30 hour mark here as well, and if you go through my posts tonight they're getting less and less coherent as time goes on. Which is actually kind of interesting once the embarrassment fades. It's just not going to be so interesting when (if) I post my next thread in which I seem to type almost everything that comes into my head. I don't really have the will to edit it either, so hopefully a decent spell check will deal will allow me to communicate with you normal, well educated people. =P

I don't have a music "collection" per se, I usually use the resources available to me. Spotify is one (about 1000 tracks in playlists, mostly classical), and if it doesn't cut it, my shool has a library of 10.000 (yes, ten thousand) CD's of mostly classical music (notice a trend?). In addition to that I have access to a few online music libraries with literally millions of tracks. Oh, and I have like, 10 CD's.

It's relative - I'm certain almost anyone my age or greater on these forums has had a greater education than mine. =P Off topic now, but fuck it's my topic anyway, what are you studying?

Computer science. I'm finishing my degree :D Had probably the most boring exam ever - quantitative methods in software engineering. On the downside, it was boring as hell. Also, I hope I passed it. On the upside, I got to write about Warcraft 3. Seriously. I cited the study by Claypool into latency affecting real-time strategies. OK, wasn't just Warcraft, there was also C&C Generals and Age of Mythology but he used explanations what he did with Warcraft, the others were analogous.

If you're wandering, the conclusion was that latency from few milliseconds to several seconds didn't actually impact the player's performance. At least not significantly. Though he also admits further research is needed to solidify the results.

I have about 2.5k songs on my iTunes, but many are an hour+. I have literally hundreds of CDs of classical stuff though which I don't bother to upload as it's my dad's collection he made for many years and I'm not into it all.
There are no big performances in rock that I can really think of... actually, I can't name one stand-out concert in any genre ever. Be pretty cool to go to the last night of the proms. Or some smokey bar listening to jazz. I used to be some idiot who liked solely guitar-based pop (Paramore, All Time Low etc) but then I broadened my repertoire and learnt that, in my opinion at least, jazz or maybe blues is probably the most groundbreaking genre in the last 100 years, not just some recent pop.

This thread is rather simple, but I was curious of a few things:

* What musical styles make up the majority of the music you own?
* Is this a good indicator of your musical preferences?
* What kind music do you wish you had more of?
* Is you collection mostly digital, CD or vinyl?
* How much of your music have you seen live?
* Anything notable that you've seen live?
* What acts would you like to go see?
* What gigs do you wish you could have been at?
Almost all of my Music is metal. However, I have a large number of JRPG soundtracks (Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Virtue's last Reward) and Grunge. Almost everything I own is in CD format. Anything that I can't find in stores, I import online (finding those PKMN soundtracks was a *****).

I've seen a fair number of acts that I own such as: Opeth, Sabaton, Rob Zombie, dream theater, epica, and Immortal Technique. I would like to see Mastodon live, as well as see Opeth (I only saw their acoustic show) and Sabaton again. Personally, I regret not going to Sepultura and Decapitated when they came to town, as I wasn't into death metal at the time, as well as missing Iron Maiden and Gojira.

I'm somewhere around 4300 songs on my iPod, but I've had probably 2x that in my iTunes library in the past. A little pruning of the music tree was needed.

* What musical styles make up the majority of the music you own?
Rock and Metal are probably the largest genre, then Alternative, Jazz, Soundtracks, and John Zorn.

* Is this a good indicator of your musical preferences?
For the most part, yeah. I'll listen to rap and country on occasion, but they're not genres I spend a lot of time with.

* What kind music do you wish you had more of?
Could always use more in the vein of High on Fire, Dream Theater, or Mastodon.

* Is you collection mostly digital, CD or vinyl?
Pretty much entirely digital now. I had the physical discs for years, but started just pawning them off after loading them on my drive.

* How much of your music have you seen live?
I've seen: High on Fire, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Flogging Molly, Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, and Priestess live.

* Anything notable that you've seen live?
NIN were probably the most elaborate live act I've seen. Very cool show, even if I didn't care about some of the tunes.

I have less than 1000 songs in my Itune library. I don't import all of my CD into my pc as I do try to saved spaces on my harddrive (and my portable hd is a pain to use.)

* What musical styles make up the majority of the music you own?
Jpop

* Is this a good indicator of your musical preferences?
Somewhat since these days I am out of touch with the lastest Jpop (I'm not a fan of the Korean pop group Girl Generation).

* What kind music do you wish you had more of?
Soundtrack but alas I ain't no thief but importing anime and games soundtracks are expensive.

* Is you collection mostly digital, CD or vinyl?
Digital

* How much of your music have you seen live?
One

* Anything notable that you've seen live?
This is more of an unintentional thing as a Jpop group arrived in this anime launch party thing. They pretty much a niche/ indie Jpop called Motocompo and they played they songs. I became a fan of them and bought they Ablum and a single from their latest songs after the party when they were selling it.

Re-read that section of my post - or any of it actually, I even link music that doesn't fit that genre in the last two questions - they are only the two largest genres in my digital library. For further clarification, when broken down in to more accurate sub genres the combination Jazz and Blues is almost equal to that of the non-dubstep EDM in a library of that currently sits at 7584 songs.

The artists of which have either play Jazz or have experimented with it are:

Austin Peralta
Charles Mingus
The Bill Evans Trio
Brian Blade Fellowship
Derek Trucks
Eva Cassidy
Freddie Hubbard
Gretchen Parlato
Gutbucket
Hiatus Kaiyote
Ibrahim Maalouf
Idris Muhammad
Jason Lindner
John Coltrane
Lee Morgan
Laura Nyro
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Miles Davis
Morphine
Natasha Agrama
Praov Stelar
The Philadelphia Experiment
Snarky Puppy
Sonny Sharrock
Thelonious Monk
Vince Guaraldi

It's safe to say at this point; no, I wasn't saying that all music - or even all my own music - fit those two broad genres. In fact, it was a criticism of the poor labelling of most of the music I've come across. So can we not throw around insults - even masked ones - about musical tastes? It's pretty pathetic (though in this case, the fact I didn't even say either of the statements you said I did makes it kind of funny).

Checking Spotify, my main playlist has 910 songs. My second biggest though has 225 songs. considering though that I have about 20 playlists, I'd say I'm at about 1800 all in all.

My collection has roughly 3.5 thousand songs, which is mostly a blend of Industrial/Aggrotech and Metal, with a few alt rock bands.

It's a pretty good indicator. There are a few genres that I don't mind, but heavy music is usually what I'll listen too when given the choice.

I wish I had more Metal. Specifically, more Melodic Death Metal. My Industrial collection has grown quite a bit over the past few years, and my Metal collection has been stagnating.

My collection is mostly digital. The few CD I have are ripped, so I guess that means my collection is entirely digital.

I'll make a list of concerts I can remember at the moment:
-Slipknot
-System of a Down
-Marilyn Manson
-Opeth
-Arcade Fire
-The Agonist
-In Flames
-Killswitch Engaged
-Children of Bodom
-Gojira
-Cannibal Corpse
-Five Finger Death Punch
-As I Lay Dying
-Dethklok
-Amon Amarth
-Machine Head
-Annihilator (Got my picture taken with them)
-Combichrist (Grabbed Andy LaPlegua's hand)
-Panzer AG
-Hocico
-Grendel
-Blutengel (Grabbed Chris Pohl's hand)
-Shiv-R (Got my picture taken with them)
-Haujobb
-C-Lekktor
-FGFC820
-Nachtmahr

I really wanted to go to the Kinetik Festival in Montreal next week, but tickets sold out before I could convince someone to go with me. This is going to be the second time that I miss Suicide Commando, and he just released a new album, and will be playing a 2 hour set... fuck.
