I'm not going to lie, I thought Portal 2 was better than Portal.

I know many people wouldn't agree, but I thought the greatest part of Portal(or any valve game) was improved upon, which was the atmosphere of the entire game. Plus, Cave Johnson and Wheatley were great characters. But, what makes these forums so great is the opposing opinion. I would like to hear both sides, and see what everyone thought about both games.

I think Portal is the better game

But, if someone were to say "Pick one and it's the only one I can have and play"

I'd recommend portal 2

I thought Portal 2 was much better. I'm more of a story person so I could get into portal 2 way more than the first portal. I also just loved all the different characters in 2 like Cave Johnson an Wheatly. The humor was also on a completely different level, I had a hard time playing it because I was laughing so hard.

I think that overall Portal 2 was a much better game than Portal (though I picked "loved both of them" because I did), espescially since this time around everyone expected it and knew what it was about.

IMO one of the things that made Portal so great was that it was unexpected. Portal 2, not so much. There were HUGE expectations behind this game and Valve I think met all of them. Great story? Check. AWESOME ending? Check. Challenging but not impossible puzzles? Check. More backstory behind Chell and Aperture Science? Check. Stepen Merchant? Check. Portal 1 style Co-op mode? Check.

It was a triumph.

Portal 2 was amazing, but Portal 1 has a more established atmosphere. It is darker, more mysterious, and chaotic. Portal 2 was much happier, GLADOS was focused more on comedy then being a strange computer with a bunch of kinks and psychotic urges. The co-op is also pretty silly.

In short, the atmospheric development in Portal is superior to Portal 2.

Haven't played #2 yet, but #1 seems to have longevity whereas #2 seems to have fizzled out quickly. Probably since #1 was so unique and received so little advertising, the quality of the game was a surprise. Whereas #2 maybe improves greatly over the first, it's just more of the same in the end.

I can't compare the 2 games fairly yet though, as I haven't played #2. I have high hopes though.

Portal 2 was the better game but Portal was the better surprise and will always be remembered more fondly.

Portal 2 was better, but that isn't really saying much for me.
I found Portal 1 to be mediocre/sub-par-ish at best, and Portal 2 is only slightly better(Solely because of the co-op), so my view on Portal 2 is one of decent-ness.

From a purely mechanical standpoint, Portal 2 was definitely the superior game.

That said, Portal is the "better" game. The original just had that unique charm that's simply impossible to replicate with sequels, and because of that I enjoyed my first experience with Portal a lot more than my first experience through Portal 2.

My problem with portal was that is started to feel more of the same, portal 2 had enough features to stop it getting old.

Portal 2 has more good points, but it's heavily outweighed by its flaws in my opinion. What really irritated me is how the novelty of the Portal Gun was long dead by the second game and it felt really tedious.

It's hard to say which is better...

Gameplay: Portal (I thought the puzzles were more difficult and the portal gun was new)
Aesthetic: Portal 2
Characterization: Portal 2
Humor: Portal (I thought that the second didn't have consistent quality)
Length: Both! (I've heard that some people think the second is better based on it's length...both were the right length for the amount of gameplay and story they contained)

Overall, I would say that when it was released, portal was a better game because of it's unexpected impact, but compared side by side, portal 2 is better.

I liked both pretty much equally. The first because it was a relatively new concept and it came right out of left field. Few people were initially looking at that portion of the Orange Box and it ended up being a pleasant surprise. In my opinion, Portal 2 built on everything that was great about the first one. Sure, the load screens were a bit ridiculous at times but that was a small price to pay to have such a thoroughly enjoyable gaming experience.

For me, Portal 2 was more creative, innovative, challenging and funnier than the original. Also it has one of the most bat shit insanely awesome endings I've ever seen in a game.

Loved them both, but Portal 2 is so much more fleshed out and an all around better game. My only complaint about Portal 2 was the number of load screens, but if that's the worst thing about a game...

I liked Portal better because it was more focused on puzzle solving. Portal 2 is more story based. This was most evident in the past labs, when the game focuses more on the back-story than the puzzles. I'm all in favor of a good story, but not when it is prioritized over the puzzles in a puzzle-solving game. Like Yahtzee said, in the old labs you spend more time looking for the one or two feet or portal-able surfaces than you do puzzle solving. This is mostly so they have an adequate reason to tell the back-story. Also, the current story doesn't make much sense to me based on the events of the first game. At the end of Portal, GLaDOS is singing about how she is alive and not mad at you. Now, she's dead and pissed off.

I still loved both games, though.

I loved both.

I felt Portal 1 was a great concept and a great game and i felt Portal 2 went in the logical places, built on the first games positive aspects and brought new things to the table.

I don't get how Portal 2 isn't as good as Portal 1, for some people. It was everything I could of wanted from a sequel and more (cliched yes, but this is genuinely how I felt) I loved the story, I loved the new mechanics, the new puzzles were great, the new characters and locations were awesome and co-op is a blast.

Valve is good at putting a story with a good game and gradually making them better. If Portal 1 was the "Star Wars", Portal 2 is "the Empire Strikes Back".
