I went with the actiony option, however I also like Fable combat/Dragon Age 2. I like turn based the least.

I actually don't care for Bethesda's combat system in any of their games, I still like their games it's just I don't play them for the combat. Sorta surprised you didn't include Kingdoms of Amalur fighting style cuz that has so far been the absolute best combat system in an RPG imo.

FFVIII wasn't a bad system as far as turn based is concerned however I hate that you have those limit breaks but have no real control when you can use them. So far the best JRPG combat I've played is the Star Ocean series. Also random encounters suck I'd like to see enemies and either choose to attack them or evade them.

Re: ARPGs, I think that Fable is actually the perfect example of what not to do. The lack of tactical depth basically means that that you're still grinding, just in real-time. The really good ARPG combat systems I've played are good because you're not just button mashing. Like in a Witcher game, there are these central resource management and preparation mechanics, and in a Deus Ex game, you're using the level geography to trap, isolate, or sneak up on enemies. If people want the Fable experience, they can always turn down the difficulty.

Poll is missing an option: SRPG/squad-based style combat. Can be either real-time or turn-based. I usually prefer TB for this.

Action(adventures) can also be fine to play, if the focus is on the action and not some weak hybrid.

I dislike combat mechanics that are neiter action nor tactical. Games like diablo-clones, Elder scrolls titles and even fallout, lose points for weak gameplay.

Turn-based in an isometric view is the combat style for me. Fallout, Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil. All games I enjoyed the combat in.

I really like the way Dark Messiah did it in fact it still remains one of the very few games with actual good, responsive first-person melee combat and in my humble opinion the best first-person melee combat ever. Just wish that bethesda would put in a aombat syle like that instead of the boring old click fest that is the elder scrolls combat.

I feel that turn-based combat is growing out of place in video games when those things can be more or less automatic. In a board game, you don't have that thus you calculate all of this yourself.

In other words, I can focus on setting up an ambush, sneaking around them, hit & run, or coming in with a bazooka and wreaking havok without having to be concern about leveling up against the other guy and waiting my turn to be shot while standing still.
