Poll: Your own life - Or ten strangers lifes?

I'm not asking you about morality as much as I am ethics (different things). I'm still curious how you reached this conclusion, but if you don't care to share that's fine. I just hope you are willing to share when faced with the families of those 10 people.

That would be pretty interesting. A shame this is a hypothetical dilemma. But honestly, I believe that a big part of those who voted that 10 > Myself would actually choose the opposite, were they in a real life situation. Fear topples morals and ethics under it's boots.

Let's just hope we don't find ourselves in this kind of situation any time soon, yeah?

I'd argue that that's only really the case when said ethical principles are poorly thought out or not genuinely adhered to, but I'm sure you're right that this is the case for some people in this thread.

I doubt I could handle the guilt. I'd take my own life, after some really tough consideration. Or, more likely, I would just sit there and not press either button.

Let´s play the imaginary game.

Let´s imagine you´ve been put in a room with a big glass panel separating you from ten strangers. You can see them through the glass. They look like your average middle-aged men. There is a speaker allowing you to hear what they say.


Let´s say that there were two buttons in this room.
One button results in the room the strangers are in getting lit on fire. Complete with them screaming in agony and you hearing every single second of it. But you come out okay. Noone will ever know or believe you if you tell them.

The other button will administer a lethal injection of let´s say...poison into your body. You won´t feel a thing, but you will die. The strangers however, will live on.

So. What matters most to you?

Me? Screw them, my own life is more important! Even though i´d feel like crap.

Do they know I have control over their lives?
and
Can I ask them any questions?
and
Can I get any honest information about them?


Simple fact is, ten people I don't know are ten people I don't know. I can't make a reasoned judgement on unknowns.

In all honesty, I will refuse to press either button until I get more information.

Given that I wouldn't be able to live with myself after condemning 10 innocents to a horrible agonising death just to save my own worthless life (and anyone who would kill 10 innocents for otheir own benefit IS worthless) I'd freely kill myself to spare the other 10. And I have nothing but contempt for the currently 118 people who would kill them without a second thought. You're the ones who don't deserve to live.

Wow you really need to calm down. I was kidding with my original post hence the at the end. Not really sure how you get that all regular human people deserve to die from a sarcastic remark but I suppose your mind is clouded by the obvious anger you feel towards a random stranger on a forum?

Also read my first post where I did put thought into this topic where I said I would fall asleep from the stress of the situation and probably end up killing myself or the people by falling on a button or hitting it in my sleep.

OK Kefo, I suspected you may have been kidding, but I don't have much of a sense of humour when there are so many people casually but sincerely bragging that they'd murder 10 innocents in a horrifying and agonizing way rather than accept a painless death themselves. The poll results in this topic have made me rather ill, not to mention fucking angry.

And hey, Mr Wannabe-Vampire-Badass-Number-Eight-Hundred-And-Thirty-Two, don't you DARE call me a hypocrite and don't you DARE put words in my mouth. You made up that shit that supposedly "derped me into a corner" out of nowhere; I didn't "condemn everyone who isn't suicidal", but I have no tolerance for evil-minded fucks who can honestly say they wouldn't feel even a twinge of conscience about murdering 10 innocents, no matter what the circumstances. "Condemn everyone who isn't suicidal" is a fairly accurate rephrasing of what you said, and you're a hypocrite for saying that people who voted 1 & 2 deserve to die right after going on about how precious human life is. Do you see how those two contradict each other? While you have no tolerance for anyone with an average level of self-worth, I have little tolerance for internet white knights. Myself, easily. Theres not even going to be any pain. Burning to death sound horrible and i'm sure more people are going to miss 10 people more than single person. And then i would have done something good whit my life :3.
