I would save my pet obviously. I love my pet.
although, If I had the chance I would try to save both or if there was someone nearby I would call them.
but, no, I would not save the person who I have never met in my entire life over my pet who I love and have a ton of good memories with.

I mean if you were the stranger and they saved their pet you'd die with the happy knowledge that what they did was morally right yeah?
Unless I die at the age of 97+ of a heart attack from having/attempting a threesome with a pair of young female underwear models, I'm going to be pissed off regardless.

I wouldn't be physically able to save a human. Too heavy. I'd love to try and save both. In that situation a human is much more likely to save him/herself than an animal that isn't a fish.

Also, hate to brake the news, but this poll is entirely determined by whose an animal lover and who isn't. My dogs helped me recover from depression. I'd be unspeakably ashamed of myself for the rest of my life if I abandoned them.

I'd save my pet. Simple reasoning: I'm a moderate swimmer, but I'm pretty another human being puts me over my weight capacity, a house cat is another story.

If suddenly blessed with the strength to make it a real choice (and not a "save your pet, or probably join the stranger" choice), I'd probably choose the stranger.
I think a lot of you are reading into the question the wrong way. It is not about your swimming capabilities or strength, it is a choice. You have a choice of whose life to save. Also, the poll's inclusion of a third answer means it is invalid as data. Giving a third way out means that a certain number of people did not have to make a choice, and we do not know, as a result, what their choice would have been had they actually made one. Now we have a large unknown population confounding the results.

I would save the stranger... If I could. I'm a terrible swimmer ;____; I don't blame people if they want to save their pet. I know how much they can mean to you.

I am afraid that the extreme end of that sort of thinking leads to people like Michael Vick who took great pleasure in hanging dogs from trees and smashing their heads into the pavement because they didn't fight well enough.
That part right there. Any questions?

Edit: Shit! You're right, I'm wrong, and I'm an idiot. Sorry about that.

So, uh... nice weather here on the internet, isn't it?
No worries. I guess it was an inflammatory statement, regardless.

Here's my dilema I love my pet and considering many people can be total bastards whenever they want it shifts my prefrence to something that won't be a dick to me down the road, that said it is a person who is relying on someone to save them rather than some random animal but getting past the issue of choosing who to save chances are your pet won't struggle when you try to help it a person if they are drowning and don't know your trying to help them or are just so scared will and if they panic enough they could take you with them so yeah I'm a selfish bastard I'd save my pet.

And I shall rationalize it however I want!

My puppy has loved me unconditionally since the day I found and raised her as a puppy. She would do anything for me, including possibly give her own life to protect me, and I will not betray her in her time of need.

Why should I care?
Well, if you're a sociopath with no regard for suffering you've caused there is nothing one can say that can 'make' you care.

Though for purely pragmatic reasons it makes sense to -pretend- you have a conscience and save the human. Saving a dog over a human would likely make it to big news outlets and make you a social outcast for the rest of your life.
I would save my pet as well, but saying I'm a sociopath with no regard for the suffering I've caused is just silly. Of course I would feel like shit, Of course I would fell emotions that can't be explained by words. But the thing is I would feel those if my pet died as well.

and you keep adding on things that doesn't really make sense in this scenario. You say that the woman might be a mother of three? well, what if my dog just have 5 puppies? does it really matter? Whether she had kids or not I would probably never know.
And if there are someone to say to the media that I saved the dog over the other person wouldn't that make him a bigger outcast than me? Because while I was in the water saving a life he just stood there watching.

Realistically I'm not a particularly strong swimmer, so I'd probably call out for help and call 911.

If for whatever reason I suddenly found myself trying to be a hero, I'd probably just save whichever is closest to me since, like I mentioned... not a strong swimmer. If I made a choice to save a certain one, I don't think I could bring myself to swim -past- the other and not try to help.

My responsibility is to the creature I willingly adopted. I have no responsibility to any stranger. It would be a greater shame to abandon my willing responsibility.

I can't swim so both of them are fucked. Results of this poll are unsettling, hopefully there wont be any cats or hamsters around if i ever get in trouble, because apparently they are more important than me. Hm.. I changed my mind, fuck you people, i'll save my pet rat instead.

Uhh dogs can swim just fine you know but I'm not sure I can swim well enough to carry a panicking adult.
That's not exactly easy.

A life is a life, it's all the same shit.
That's bullshit. There is a reason the millions of cells that die when you scratch your ass don't cause you moral concern, it's because not all lives are equal. Humans are more worthy of moral concern because they have a higher capacity for suffering than animals.

Then why create a thread like this if you already have your mind made up?
I explained that already. Dennis Prager said something that I found to be ri-goddamned-diculous on one of his barely-coherent rants about liberals being immoral without God. I thought it was bullshit.

Clearly he was right to a much larger extent than I would want to admit is possible. Clearly some people -do- need a sky daddy to tell them the basics of right and wrong.
Wow your thread took off like a rocket from this morning. Well anyways, well if those are the 'morals' you choose to follow then by all means go for it. I care for things that are important to me. Human life is precious, just not enough to make me abandon the things I love.
