My army would consist of Knights in armor that spews fire, who wear sunglasses, are equipped with automatic laser shotguns, who wear Afro's who ride black bears....the bears have afros too with dual miniguns and rocket launchers on both sides. NONE SHALL STOP ME!
I chose monsters, as my ideal army has always been and will always be Shoggoths.
They're big, they're designed to be mindless servants who will do anything, they can spontaneously form appendages and makeshift weapons from their bodies, they're practically invincible, they're acidic to the touch, and they're a definite menace. One Shoggoth could easily take down an entire state before it would even notice that people were trying to fight back against it. With an army of them...

a legion of badass, sexy succubi and male concubines to suduce all the worlds people....those unfortunate idiots that don't fall for thier looks and charms will be ripped to shreds by thier horrifying alternate devil forms. Once the world is mine I'd create a powerful army of robots to squash any rebellion that my succubi can't contain

Beings of darkness. All the horrifying reality warping advantages of Great Old Ones without the (undue) insanity and inevitable betrayal. And of course you can buy them in bulk. However, I'd keep some human mercs, pirates, and shadowy cults around, who would of course both fear and love me, just in case. Can't really trust shadow creatures with thinking and strategy.
Robots for no reason other than I have a soft spot for them. My preferred form of legion is Legion and his legion. That's one thing from ME3 I look forward to at least. Legion didn't get nearly enough party time.
Robots. Definitely robots. If programmed correctly they would be completely and utterly obedient and unquestioning.

Definately some shadow-related ability, quite possibly the same way as Pride from FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. That stuff is bad-ass!

I was going to go with Geth just cause they're awesome... But then I Realized having the Covenant on my side would be pretty sweet. Get into a fight and I just snap my fingers and down comes an elite with a beam sword or better yet Scarab to destroy the whole home town of my enemies.
