Well I've always been the super-nice guy so I had a bunch of "friends" in high school. But I have a core group of friends (even though I live at least 400km from the nearest one, stupid Saskatchewan).

When you work with a popular band, people take a liking to you. All the sweaty hugs and times I've just hung out with tons of random people, it's pretty great. In fact, I doubt any of them even know about my addiction.

Yeah, this place is good for that at least. You can watch your dog run away for three days out here. Stupid flat prairies.

Many of my friends are gamers, and I have several other pursuits that allow me to make friends with people who don't give a rat's ass about video games. So, gaming and social status are pretty much completely separate for me.

"I am kinda' unpopular. I don't have many friends, just one or two."

I used to have a fair few friends but they all hate me now... I don't want to go into what happened.

Most of my friends are gamers as well, so you're more of an outcast if you don't play.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

To clarify, this means friends in real-life, not the Internet.

So, being the social reject that I am, I was wondering if I am alone in all of this.

My vote would go to option 5, unless you count my father. I don't understand it, really. I try really hard to hide that I play games. It sucks, but I wouldn't give them up for all the friends in the world.

I mean, don't get me wrong. It's not like I've never had a friend, I have had a few here and there, but I haven't been able to keep any for more than a few months.

Make no mistake, I am not looking for advice or a friend or something, I am just wondering if video games have something to do with it. I am wondering if there are others out there who cannot connect with others in the same way I am unable to because of their addiction to games, or perhaps games are an allure to those of us who are predisposed to social rejection.
Honestly, I've found that hiding my love of games just creates a mask: that turns people off for sure. If people can't accept you for who you are, they're crappy friends anyway. Find other people who have the same interests as you and go from there.

I'm not popular, per se, but that's mostly because I'm the kind of guy who would rather have a few good friends than a lot of shallow ones. And my good friends can accept my love of gaming and like me for who I am. I was also lucky enough to find a girlfriend who shares my interests.

Point is, don't try to be something you're not. Popularity doesn't matter as much as friendship, and you will only find real friendship in people who can accept you for who you are.

I have a few good friends, a girl friend, and 2 stalker ex girlfriends.

I find it easier to make friends online, and THEN meet them real life though. Why? Because it becomes easier to forge a bond that can't be broken by initial first appearence.
I also find learning of people online more fun because when I visit goth BDSM meeting sites and get them hooked on my kinky ways they tend to not care I am not really goth an only average looking :p
(Yeah... I like Black Chicks and Goth Chicks... If you don't then you are racist, communist, and intolerant!)

My best friend is a cat. And she doesn't understand my gaming, but doesn't have a huge problem with it either.

I have quite a few friends, not as many as some people, not as few as others, but the friends I do have all just label me as the gamer and apart from that it never comes up again. (Probably helps that I also play the guitar, act and write stories. There's so many things which people can label me as, the gamer thing never sticks.)

I'm in the 'popular group' as you might call it.
Games have never really come up as a problem for me, actally quite a few of my friends play games and so a fair amount of my socializing is through games.

I have a lot of friends, and the fact that I game doesn't really affect anything. A lot of my guy friends game a little too, but unfortunately my boyfriend doesn't much. I'll convert him one day.

But yeah, gender and gaming- does anyone think that gaming is more likely to affect your social status if you're male?

My social life is pretty much dead because it seems that any time I get a good conversation going with someone, someone else comes and starts talking to them, and ends up changing the subject to something that I can't follow, like some movie I didn't watch, or how so-and-so who I don't know got wasted at some party.

I am fairly liked by pretty much everyone, but I have very few friends who I actually get the chance to hang out with.

I'm damn near positive that games have nothing to do with it, as I spend a good chunk of my time doing martial arts training and working out. Furthermore, I have several popular friends who have big reputations as gamers - one of them even has a habit of ditching his friends to play XBox, and he's pretty much the life of the party.

Um im in the "popular" crowd i guess...i dont know i have all sorts of freinds from club hoppers to DnD people. Out of my close friends im really the only one who plays video games other than Madden or Counter Strike. They dont care, theyre my friends for other reason not just my personal hobbies.
I'd agree with this, that about describes me. Except for the club-hopping, as I'm not old enough for clubs yet
