it seems that in many of todays videogames protagonists play the role of the messiah in their world, being the one person at the front in the battle against an undefeatable foe, yet they still manage to come out on top. They act as a symbol to the people of the world, a symbol of justice and strength, and everyone looks to that protagonist for leadership and protection against this powerful foe.

So, when a powerful enemy suddenly rises, who would you choose as your videogame messiah?

If it had to be one of those it would be Gordon Freeman, as he practically is a messiah.

But I'd rather Artyom from Metro 2033, a fairly average dude who does awesome stuff, but without being ridiculously tough or super human.

JC Denton... he's an upgradable messiah...<.<
i've never heard of this character before, but after looking him up on wikipedia, i've decided to add him to the list, just simply because the makers of Deus Ex had considered during development that the character would be a descendant of Jesus Christ (hence JC)

Desmond from Assassin's Creed. He's an every-man, fairly easy to relate too and yet a grand destiny to save the world.

Him or Jak... with daxter of course.

Link is irritated that he hasn't been mentioned.

In the words of TVtropes, he isn't a one man army, he's a one man DEATH STAR.

Pssh, Mario is my video game messiah. Who else can restore his health from mere pocket change? And don't forget his arsenal of hats, his awesome cape and his trusty Yoshi steed.

Yeah, and this was before the Da Vinci Code made it all popular.

The original utilized the Illuminati, false flag attacks, Free Masons, Templars, and the secret treasure beneath the Temple of Solomon before they were in vogue.

Take that Alex Jones and Dan Brown!

I voted Link, but when I thought about it some more a Messiah character is primarily defined by the scope of the problem they solved, usually through their own martyrdom at the end.

For that, Zero comes to mind. The struggle between humans and Reploids went on for 12 games and hundreds of years, killing billions. Zero not only brought a lasting peace between them, but destroyed the two extremely powerful and evil beings responsible for much of the death (in fact one of those two opens his fight with 'I am the Messiah! HAHAHA!').

Second place to Solid Snake for undoing a centuries-old conspiracy despite being a senior who at times seems too fragile to walk.

I voted other. Then I realised I didn't know what to put. So I suppose this means I don't have a videogame messiah and just... didn't realise it until now.

I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite thread on the escapist.

Come on, he even died and was resurrected. By something called the Lazarus project even.

You fools!

If we're talking games and messiahs then Kane is by far the most qualified individual.

YOU CANNOT KILL THE MESSIAH!
