Which view accurately depicts your personal opinion on intelligence?

I vote on the "It is based on pain" option, simply because many scholars, writers, and geniuses I revere led horrible, painful lives. Simply put, the beauty of the soul stands above our modern complications and mental beliefs in "systems" and modern neo-philosophies.

I could go on and on about the mind and how many establishments want us to sacrifice it heedlessly for the welfare of others.

Primarily problem solving (though that doesn't describe it exhaustingly) because it's about logic and finding solutions.

Look up Gardner's Theory of Multiple intelligence. It essentially falls under it is a complex concept. And it shows just because you're good in one field, doesn't necessarily mean you'll be good in another field.

I think it is a complicated problem, and it can't be simplified to one statement about what it is based on.

The nature/nurture argument is pervasive in these situations, but it is a stupid argument because there is a demonstrable involvement of both.

It's overrated.

Intelligence originates from memory, and making decisions that would keep you alive. These days, it is compared to the masses.

I would like to say that many of the people that are thought of as "intelligent" merely looked in other directions or were just highly involved and highlighted during the periods they were born in.

It's a complex concept. You can break it down and say that someone is very intelligent in regards to one task but not so intelligent when it comes to another.

I don't think the collective knowledge of a person can be broken down into such simple choices, I feel everyone has a mix of these things.

So if I lashed you with a steel barbed whip you would get smarter?
It would seem to me that the opposite is true, and they led painful lives because they were intelligent (and expressed it). Not that they were intelligent because they were in pain.

I think I see it as reasoning. Using common sense to solve problems. But then you think about Einstein...
It's most likely a combination of many things.

Intelligence, to me, is a mish mash of pretty much all the ideas in the poll....except for fame because that's just silly. Most famous people these days have the relative IQ of a boot filled with cream cheese.

Its a simple concept, though one not easily explained, but you can mostly tell who is intelligent and who is not (except for the really smart people who don't let on that their intelligent.)

Though I demand a based on sanity option, it seems to me that the more intelligent someone is the more common it is for them to have some mental quirks.

To me it's what people know, logic, problem solving and a few other things.

It is a complex thing. There are many forms of intelligence, and the importance of them is almost all equally important. Intelligence in general is formed by genetics, how you were raised, your beliefs on how the world and you should work, and what you're willing to do. There is a difference between intelligent and book-smart. The book-smart are the ones with the already done facts. The intelligent are the ones who seek new ones. Of course, you can be both, and it's those kind of people that will lead us to the future. I'm not book-smart, but I would say I'm pretty intelligent in comparison.

It's simple, really. Many people confuse intelligence with knowledge. Everyone knows the "smart" kid in their class; the kid that knows odd historic events and calculates fractions in his head. That kid could very much be as intelligent as you, yes, YOU. The difference is that he is interested in different things than you; he probably wouldn't know much relating to sports or pop culture.

True "intelligence" is how quickly one responds to basic problems, like a smartass. While your quickness can be reflected by the knowledge you've gathered, the basic principle remains.

EDIT: I voted for "It is a simple concept" - which is basicly - "It is based on problem solving"

...if you're able to summarize intelligence into any of those one sentences (except for complex), wouldn't it mean it's a simple concept? I also realized some of your options are stupid, gah.

wait, wait

- complex = each person has their own version...or anything and everything
- it is based on being famous, who voted for that!?
- whatever, godammit. I'm done.

There are different kinds of intelligence. so i choose "each person has their own kind". I submit to you the concept of the idiot savant, who cannot tie his shoes ((stupid)) but can solve complex Algebraic formulae in thier head. ((genius))
