I think its ok if your just doing it to have fun and not using it to actually get trough the game.

For example: I like using cheats in grand theft auto 4 when I'm just jerking around with the sandbox, but I never use them on any of the missions.

I admit to using the unlimited money cheat code in Sim City 3000. Although the cheat is a double edged sword because the result is kind of like real life money laundering. You end up with a shit load of money, none of which is accounted for and although you're allowed to build ANY building or infrastrucure you wish in you're city you still need to find the means to keep you're city from bankrupting, managing it like you would without the cheat.

I see cheating reasonable only if you have beaten the campaign mode on every difficulty there is. (the only exception to the first sentence would be in a sand box kind of game like GTA because sometimes its more fun to throw yourself out of a helicopter than it is to play the story) Even then, cheating online (camping, modded controllers) I frown upon. But then again it lets me know that I'm still better because I don't need to cheat to do well.

Cheats can be fun if they're in there just to help sass up the place. Cheats like flying cars in GTA or that one that put Knight Rider in Civilization are awesome. Other cheats can be fun if you've already beaten the game.

Nowadays there isn't much call to cheat anymore. Games are too easy as is, and most of the stuff that used to be fun cheats is now "unlockable content". Not that I mind. I'd much rather get the fun crap for beating the game on hard then for keying in some complex code that I had to look up.

RTS/strategy and RPG games i never do, as what fun is your ultimate army of doom, if you didn't save up for and build it yourself.

I do sometimes in FPS's when it gets to the inevitable "find an item to get past this door" or "this boss is invinsible until you find this tiny switch to turn the invinsibility off for a while"
I'm a firm believer of the "if you shoot it enough, it should break" school of thought
