I know this is getting off topic but I really have to ask. What about music? Will you buy MP3s off Amazon or iTunes? What about cellphone games? What about consoles like Ouya?krazykidd said:What you say is true , and it's one of the reasons i refuse to game on a PC . Maybe i'm too old fashionned , but i rather have a physical copy of my games , and i like to be able to do what i want with them . Not that i look down on people that game on PC , but it's just a personal choice that i made , because i don't accept what they are doing .keideki said:You know, the funny thing is that lots of the games that still come on CDs just contain a mostly blank CD that starts the steam download process. It was that way for Red Faction Armageddon.krazykidd said:What did people not see this coming with the start of DLC. I never have/ never will buy dlc for anything ever. I don't support dlc , i don't want dlc . Free or not i'm not downloading anything that isn't a patch for my games . If your game isn't finished don't release it! Now other can throw their money at publishers if they want , but i won't have any of it .
I am also against Digital download , so even if it's a proper expansion pack , allow me to buy it on disc or i will not buy it .
Does this mean you also refuse to buy PSN and XBLA titles? What about minecraft? A lot of good indie and smaller titles NEVER get boxed releases.
As for PSN and XBLA title . I don't buy those either . Like i said , i'm all about physical copies . If anything happens i know i have my disc somewhere , that i can play anywhere on anyones console . Yes i will miss some great games like minecraft and bastion . Games that if they got a box release i'd by in a heartbeat . I understand why they won't get one , and i won't hold it against the developpers , but no one gets my money unless i have a physically copy of the game .
My father is the same way when it comes to software, but honestly physical media is going the way of the dinosaur. Even with most of the games you buy on CD you wind up having to log on for a DRM verification if not always be online, so it makes sense to just let you download the whole game. In theory it should allow game devs to charge less for a game if they don't have to pay for printing CDs and boxes and such. It works well for indie games, but of course the triple A studios are a different story. I can understand wanting to have physical copies of your games. It makes you feel more secure. You know what I like about Steam though? If my hard drive goes kaput I can always just download the game again on a new one, and I never have to worry about losing track of a disk or a CD key. I wound up having to buy 3 or 4 copies of Diablo 2 back in the day due to loosing disks and CD keys and then having a computer die on me.
A lot of people will then say, but what if Steam shuts down? Then wont I loose all my games? In the unlikely event that Steam does shut down (Lord forbid!), I seriously doubt Valve is gonna be like, kthxbai and just leave us hanging in the wind. It would probably wind up with a whole bunch of patches to make the games independent. Considering how successful Steam has been for Valve, I doubt very much it is going anywhere soon.
To me it seems backwards and narrow-minded to just shut out all sorts of fantastic games because they don't have boxed releases. It smacks of the same sort of fear that movie studios have for streaming services like netflix, they are new and untested and the revenue stream is different so they are scared of letting go of their DVD box sales and embracing streaming wholesale. Despite the fact that it would most likely help to combat piracy. If every movie was available for streaming on netflix for 8 bucks a month who would bother with spending 2-4 hours downloading a pirated copy?
Speaking of which what are your thoughts on Netflix?
