It will always depend on the game, and gamemode.
In single player I'll usually go for the sniper-ish approach with very accurate but slow weapons and headshot my way through, because bots are easy to kill on any difficulty setting really.

As for regular online shooters I only ever play BF3 online, and I enjoy most weapons, though shotguns and assault riffles in particular are favorites, but that might be because I tend to prefer smaller more intimate maps.

Only other shooter I ever play is Counter Strike, and thats purely for surf which I always do with a Pump action shotgun, being a low level player on an RPG server makes it the ONLY way to kill most players.

Shotties and my trusty melee. Watch your flanks, or else I'll blow them buttcheeks off and slit your throat.

In games like Halo, I love dual-wielding cause there's little to no strategy. But in a game like Battlefield, it's always an assault rifle for its versatlity: you can survive in both close and long range situations. I did start playing around with the PDW's in BF3 recently and I noticed that the PP-19 is really overpowered. It's really accurate for its high rate of fire and humongous clip. I was able to rack up kills faster than any other weapon I've used. I don't know if its just that I'm a good match for the gun, or it's unbalanced. Anybody else noticed the PP-19 on BF3?

Whenever it comes to power fantasy I always imagine myself with sword and shield. Always sword and shield. There's just something in that combination that clicks with my defender personality.

Sniper Rifles seem to be the most popular choice by far. Don't you sniper types ever find that sniping can turn on otherwise frenetic shooter into a game of "Whack-a-Mole"? I found ME2 worst for this as the Infiltrator's cloak makes it so easy. You just wait for a head and BLAM.

I love sniping and I love my shotguns. I think Borderlands is a really good testing ground for this sort of thing because every gun type is a viable option. I love sniping because it's harder for my enemies to hit me and I almost always get headshots and I love shotguns because they do ridiculous amounts of damage close up.
