What makes you think a basement is more defensible? Remember, the undead do not tire so almost any door you have blocking their access will eventually be knocked down. A basement would eventually be overtaken if you give them long enough. An attic, on the other hand, is almost impossible for the undead to access. Zombies lack the coordination to climb so if your house has one of those attics that just have a trap door that you pull down to get in then if you close it the undead will not even realize you're there. They will break into the house, search for prey, and then leave. You can stay in your attic as long as your supplies hold out.
Good thing we've got Evilbunny here, expert on the undead and their tactics. Just out of curiosity, how many college credits does that course offer? On that note, this whole thread is pretty unrealistic so I might as well just succumb.
I do agree with you. Anyone ever seen Night of the Living Dead? Great movie, as old as it is. The one dude, Mr. Cooper, keeps trying to get everyone to go in the basement. So as not to ruin it for you when you all go to your local Hollywood Video to get NotLD on VHS, all I can say is he doesn't end well. Again, great movie.
Also, what is a dark alley even doing on that list? Who would possibly see that as a good idea?
