So, was there ever that video game that you absolutely loved but then later on you noticed that the reviews for that game were awful?

I remember playing Star Trek: New Worlds and loving the colony management of that game. I thought that the game was the greatest. But when I looked at the reviews of the game many years later I noticed that it got a 4.0 out of 10 at gamestop I believe.

Alpha Protocol was really good, fuck the haters.
I can also see the Budokia Tenkaichi series really easily getting shat upon by reviewers but I fuckin' love 'em.

Well after playing Persona 4 to completion, I went and checked on a whim and appallingly, IGN gave it an 8/10 would you believe?

Anything less than an 11/10 is unacceptable. Hopefully people can move on from arbitrary numbered scores that don't really mean anything at some point though.

I think UMVC3 got some mixed reviews and I love that game,(not as much as I love BlazBlue but still.)

The absolute lack of any singleplayer content is admittedly a HUGE flaw. Capcom must have been counting on the online flourishing for the game's entire lifespan before release, something that actually happened thankfully. Even today over a year after its release it's still got a decent sized online community.

I still believe you can't truly *learn* a fighting game without going online. Sure you can get the combos down in training all day but good luck recognising how to get in to do them on an actual opponent. Having said that I wouldn't replace BB's awesome story modes for anything.

Alpha Protocol? You mean James Bond: The Game? Yeah that was fucking awesome. Add that to my list definitely. Walking into a bar, then IMMEDIATELY dunking an important informant's head off the counter for fuck all reason just solidifys the game was amazing. It's all the little things like that that make it so charming.

New Vegas, not that the reviews weren't right about the bugs, but the game was worthwhile anyway.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: explorers of time

Reviewers didn't like it often for its repetitive gameplay. I fucking loved it for its characters and story

Well I enjoyed Dungeon Siege 3 though I won't argue with most of the criticisms. It dose have many issues and isn't want you would expect form a Dungeon Siege game. I played it with a controller not Kb&M which probably makes a difference.

X2: Wolverine's Revenge. It was just... a comic book game. And a fun one at that.

Predator: Concrete Jungle. I've yet to play any other game that lets you just fucking pick someone up and rip their body in half, bare-handed. The stealth executions were just so goddamn fun.

Tenkaichi 3 (and Budokai 3 for that matter) was reviewed pretty well, especially compared to its two predecessors. I haven't actually played Ultimate Tenkaichi, but I'm currently watching a play-through of it and it looks absolutely fucking abysmal. As ridiculously silly and over-the-top as Tenkaichi 3's combat system was, I can't believe they managed to make it even more over-the-top and consequently broke everything that actually made it somewhat engaging and fun.

Keeping on the theme of DBZ games though, Infinite World was reviewed pretty horribly considering it was basically just Budokai 3 with the addition of a very small amount of GT. It still controlled and played well, looked really good, and had a robust cast of fighters and arenas.

And if Metacritic userbombs are anything to go by, DmC, Crysis 3, Mass Effect 3, Diablo III, the list goes on and on...

Ooh... I have a few of these on my shelf. Red Ninja: End of Honor on the PS2, which was a very fun bit of sexiness and violence; Dynasty Warriors wannabe Undead Knights on the PSP, which and a baddass soundtrack, awsome oneliners and the ability turn enemies into your own platoon of zombies; Oneechanbara on both the Xbox 360 and Wii which were both dumb, clunky and very fun. God Hand, which makes me curse and scream, but is incredible when you learn how to get into a groove with it and... Hmmm... Hyperdimension Neptunia, possibly the strangest JRPG I've ever played... And I've played a lot of those.

I always liked Tenkaichi 2 more than 3. Dunno why. But I liked all the Tenkaichi games more than the basic Budokia games. Dat 3D.

But with the whole Ultimate Tenkachi stuff... yeah, I watched some gameplay and played a demo for some of the modern DBZ games. God, what went wrong?

That's basically the core mechanic of Prototype. Well, that and doing sick elbow drops off the empire state building onto old ladies.

Don't forget God of War and its, as Yahtzee so eloquently put it, "fuck you" button.

OT: Sonic R. Yeah when I look back now it's total shite, and the reviews show this, but goddamn it if my 8 year old self didn't love the tits off of it!

Deadly Premonition. Shoddy action, messy driving, and low res graphics or not, it was a surreal, dark, and humorously quirky gem.

Though the love/hate has seemed to be pretty polarizing with some reviewers.

Resident Evil 6. The game certainly isn't a 2 (out of 5) or a 4 (out of 10) or whatever. I had a ton of fun playing the game and certainly felt like I got my bang for my buck. Sure it isn't scary in the slightest (in fact I only had ONE jump scare when the game wasn't even really trying to scare me), but its not a horrible game or the worst out there. I am also a sucker for multiple storylines that come together at various points leading to a final storyline at the end. Aside for some silly things in the plot, I found it to be really enjoyable. Don't know why everyone was hating it so much.

Granted the only game I ever played was Resident Evil 5, although I have looked up/watched all the plots/playthroughs of the other games. In a lot of ways I like it better than Resident Evil 5.

This! Pretty much the only game I've really enjoyed that was poorly reviewed. It did manage to get a few really high scores though from reviewers who could look past its flaws.

I cannot wait for the Directors Cut coming out in 10 days.

Don't you mean Jason Bourne: The Game? >.>

That's actually one thing I love about the game. They purposely made it so you could model your play-through after James Bond, Jason Bourne, or Jack Bauer, who all do have distinct styles. Or a mix of those, obviously.

Edit: Not to mention how it handled choice. I often see complaints about how X[footnote]Heavy Rain, Bioshock Infinite(though it was kinda the point), Mass Effect, The Walking Dead, Spec Ops: The Line, etc[/footnote] game's choices didn't matter much if at all. Well, that is hardly a surprise since choice rarely matters in games. We're almost always given the illusion of choice and then fed the same thing everyone else gets. If we're lucky, we get a change of dialog. But Alpha Protocol? It actually changed shit up depending on what your choices were and sometimes didn't even let you know you were making a choice. The ending itself could be completely turned up on its head depending on what you do and decide. Doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves.
