Tell yourself a short story you know well, or, if you don't read books, you could try and recall the dialog of a favorite film or TV show. This puts me straight to sleep. All you have to do is make sure you don't accidentally skip anything.

Hot milk with a teensy weensy bit of honey about half an hour before bed gets me every time.

Other things I do, is either I think of a specific memory and try really hard to focus on it and "feel" it. If THAT doesn't work, I stare (with eyes closed... it's not that hard) and think blackblackblackblackblackblackblack(for as long as I need). Because then you see black and you're also focusing your mind on one single thing(black) instead of branching out into various things.
