yup yoo read right. I think because Steam is coming to PS3 with Portal 2 the ability for PC and PS3 players to play together has finally come. Here's hoping that the next L4D is available on the PS3 and it gets the same feature.

Source: Here
According to that link Steamworks is coming to ps3. A different thing to win/mac steam.
Yeah well I'm no PC gamer so I didn't know the difference. Nevertheless, the website said that an EA employee confirmed that PC and PS3 players can play together. Hopefully it will be a start of a PC-PS gaming era.
Doesn't work for most things. Especially competitive FPSes. They tried cross-platform play with Shadowrun and console gamers just got absolutely WTFPWNED. A mouse and keyboard are just far more accurate than any gamepad.
But Portal isn't really a combat focused game, or one that requires twitchy reflexes in which case the PC would win.

Saying that, PS3 does have USB Mouse and Keyboard support, would not surprise me if you could play the game on PS3 with it.

But not 360?
Valve has pretty much given XBL the middle finger based on the policy of allowing only a small percentage of free DLCs. Valve being a company quite generous with free DLC, such as giving away a HL2 level that they created as a tech demo... damn fine level, too.
I can understand that but still.....GAAAAHHHHHHHHH.

It was the only reason I was considering buying it.
Please, just read the source. First line:
"An EA employee has confirmed to PressXorDie that Valve?s upcoming first-person-puzzle-platformer Portal 2 will be sporting cross-platform co-op between PC and PS3."
Even if the rumour is true, it doesn't say anything about no coop on 360.

If full Steam is coming to PS3 does this mean I can buy one platform version but then get both?

I ask because if its not I know to default to the PC version.

Still cross-platform multiplayer with the PC can finally fix the horribly bugged, hacked, and altogether abandoned TF2 on the PS3. How it works would be quite simple for Valve:
-Have an Orange Box save file on PS3
-Steam on PS3 detects this and gives the PS3 owner rights to download the real TF2 for free on thier Steam account if they dont already have it. This serves as a workaround for Valve being generally unable to fix EA's port of the Box.
-A proper port of TF2 to the PS3* (would take valve only a year, even with Valve Time) with cross-platform intergration.

*Come to think of it, Valve said they had other secret projects in the works. We all know Valve goes to extreme lengths for thier community (compared to other game developers) so maybe they will go and save the TF2 community of the PS3 (whats left of it anyway). And if there is cross-platform multiplayer then usage of the Move might bridge the control gap.

While the mere mention of a intergrated multiplayer on both console and PC (and Mac) is enough to confuse, scare and sometimes enrage the players, we also know Valve screws with thier fanbase like no other developer.

This is Speculation, DO NOT TAKE SERIOUSLY.

Don't hate me for my ignorance and laziness, but can you play all of portal 2 single player, or is all co-op??

Will it be 'I can play only some' levels alone I guess?
There's a co-op campaign.

Yahoo! Multi-platform multiplayer! Finally!
Wouldnt blame you for not knowing this but Microsoft made a game called Shadowrun. The only special thing about this game is that it had a cross-platform multiplayer that encouraged PC gamers and 360 gamers to fight to the death. Alas due to the aiming superiority of the PC gamers, which was so bad that low skill PC gamers could decimate the most skilled console gamers, Microsoft eventually just dropped the cross-platform section and the game faded into history.

Not to mention all the L4D updates and TF2 and stuff. They are a very generous company.

I sort of doubt the cross platform play, but it is possible. I would just see the PS3 players being at a disadvantage (and this is coming from a huge PS3/console gamer in general). I think personally I'll buy it on my comp, but if I can play with PS3 players then that's cool too. I just always find Valve games easier to control on a comp, a lot of other companies make really good FPS games though for consoles.

Right. I said it would work for Portal just fine because there's not a lot of exact aiming involved. They try to throw cross-platform co-op on any traditional FPS, though, and PC gamers would get pissed at their PS3 brethren real fast. "PC Only" servers would end up being the norm, so at that point there's little purpose in including that cross-platform play.
Well ps3 owners can choose to use a dualshock, a mouse and keyboard, or Move. I hear Move and wii m+ are actually more accurate than gamepads once you get accustomed. Options will level the playing field a bit, because ps3 owners have the option, Pc gamers can't always write them off.

Well if they play with a mouse and keyboard nobody would be able to tell the difference, but I don't imagine many PS3 owners would go that route just to please people online, do you? Most will stick with the gamepad, as that's one of the reasons they bought a console to begin with.
While most would use a dualshock, after seriously getting my ass kicked, even though i prefer a controller i would probably have to try something else. Sony has sold quite a few moves so far, and depending on the year goes, if the advantage given to Move owners becomes apparent and significant its install base will increase in order to compete(people love winning against other people). Sadly by the time this happens, if this happens, Portal 2 would have been out(if it does happen i wouldn't expect Move to hit its stride until after the release of killzone 3). Eh, just thoughts and words.

They havn't dropped cross platform support, I still often play it with my cousin who plays on 360 and I play on Pc. Unless this is recent news that I havn't seen.

Okay, yeah... not sure why I didn't think of that problem before. Multiplayer probably should probably stick to just them selves. Though maybe 360 to PS3 might work. Though that might just end up giving wind to the console flame-war. Ok, screw cross-platform multiplayer.

2 different stories. The single player you play as Chell and in the Co-op you play as a modified Personality Core and a Turret.
