I've played Skyrim, and Uncharted, but neither of them had the impact on me that Portal 2 did. Im not biased either, I'm a huge Elder Scrolls fan, and played Drake's Fortune and all. For some reason I just can't see it NOT winning.

EDIT: I stand corrected.

OT: I'm getting tired of this 'obvious GotY" crap. People quickly forget how much they liked other games they played this year when games like Skyrim comes along. Granted, Portal 2 was a great game, though I fail to see how a single game can overshadow every other game released this year considering how many great titles hit the market this year.

Does it matter what game is Game of the Year? A game doesn't automatically turn to garbage the second it isn't the game of the year, according to which ever site. With that I would also say that getting "Game of the Year" doesn't really have the same effect as getting an Oscar for your movie, or Grammy for your song, because people who play games do not have one single awards organization that they all look towards. They all look towards separate gaming sites.

That also going into the point that these gaming sites and magazines that give out "Game of the Year" are often bias towards one genre or another, or one type of thing or another.

If you like or dislike a game then do so because of YOUR opinion, not because someone else told you to.

Though if I did have to choose, I'd hope for Skyward Sword. :3

I actually liked The Witcher 2 and Skyrim the most this year. Both are great games by themselves and both are MASSIVE improvements over their predecessor.

If it's your Game of the Year then who can say you're wrong? It's my #2 (after Skyward Sword). And I still haven't even touched the co-op (No gamer friends. Sadface).

Which website awarded it GotY?
He didn't say one did, he say it won "your game of the year", referring to the fact that if the OP was giving a GOTY award, it would go to that. Which is what the OP said himself, so it was kind of pointless...

No, Portal should not win, watch Yatzee's review, thats pretty much how I feel.

Portal 1, a puzzle platformer with a great back ground story!

Portal 2, a story with puzzle platforming.

If you dont see the difference now, you never will.

My GOTY is Dead Island. It was going to be Saints Row The Third, but then Saints Row The Third took everything I liked about Saints Row 2 and said "See this? I'm going to take a big shit on all of this and you're going to pay $100 for it.".

Skyrim is probably going to win the "official" GOTY award though, considering the whole thing is just a popularity contest.

Here's my two cents: Portal 2 is a fantastic game. There is no way anyone could deny that; was it a sequel to be made? No. Was it a sequel that was done right? Absolutely! The game proved that you can take a simple story of a silent prisoner trying to escape from the clutches of a mad robot and expand on it as far as you could go and still have an excellent story.

As for it being GOTY material, it definitely has a shot. However, I feel that Skyrim is going to get the upper hand mainly due to the replay ability the game has. By that, I mean the endless amount of side quests one partakes in without ever touching the main quest. Portal 2 has the DLC expansion, Time Trials and the Co-Op modes but other than that, it's not a game I can pop into my Xbox every day and find new things to do. If it wins, then great but if not, then it's understandable. Although Skyrim's many bugs could possibly hold it back from GOTY wins.

It's your game of the year. That doesn't make it the GOTY for the MILLIONS of other gamers.

"Official?" How do you think GOTY awards work. There are dozens of different outlets.

I'm talking about the SPIKE TV awards. That's the one I see people paying the most attention to.

I extracted about 8 hours of fun from Portal 2, and only 8 hours. The co-op is fundamentally flawed, as playing it with someone who has played it more/less than you have is a recipe for the two players getting pissed at each other, and there is no replay value.

Portal 2 wins GOTY in your eyes, but don't be so ignorant to the fact that it has flaws. I love Skyrim and award it my personal GOTY, but it does fail to produce cinematic moments where it should, has plenty of awkward character interaction, stupid AI, bugs, and so on. I can see why someone wouldn't pick it as their GOTY. Now do the same for Portal 2.

Ok, well, good for you. Personally, Halo CE Anniversary is my GOTY, and I think everyone's entitled to have any game they want for GOTY.
