I think it would make more sense that a game like Skyrim or Portal 2 won, but who are we kidding ourselves. MW3 is going to rape the competition just like it raped the records.

Short and pure fun are GOOD things. Portal 2 has those. Skyrim doesn't have either - it's too long and watered-down. Bethesda expects us to award points for those two things, but some of us know better.

I have to admit its a contender. I havn't played skyrim yet but im thinking its a toss up between that and portal 2.
It's definitely a contender, but it's got plenty of stiff competition and personally, I doubt it will win it.

Gotta remember what is also going against it. Here are a few games I can think of off the top of my head that definitely compete against it:

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Star Wars: The Old Republic (let's remember it's still a 2011 game, even if it is very late)

Apparently, having a colon in the title is the secret to a good game :p

But seriously, those are the biggies in my honest opinion, and unfortunately Portal 2, as good as it is, just doesn't have the longevity or replayability that it's contenders have, meaning it's at a pretty big disadvantage.

Also, in reference to the first post, if you didn't like Skyrim as much as the hype, that's all well and dandy, but when it comes to GotY, it's more of a popularity contest and the majority will likely disagree.

Everyone's forgetting Minecraft. It was officially released this year, I expect it'll win plenty of awards.
That's a good point, Minecraft (although I've never played it) is insanely popular.

I just think people aren't thinking of it as a 2011 game. I can't really blame them.

This comes down to a matter of taste and opinion. With the high caliber of games that came out this year, the gamer community will be pretty split on this. Is any one gaming website or magazine the ultimate authority on ranking Game of the Year? Nope.

This is indeed true, but I expect everyone will suddenly remember it (or at least, the judges will) when time comes to make the GotY lists.

I'm getting Skyrim for Christmas, so I'll get back to you on the winner between it and Portal 2.

First off, let me just say if your post contained the words truth, fact, or objective and any synonyms for these. You are wrong. Period. This is all opinion and therefore none of these words or the phrase "I am not biased"(LIAR!) apply.

Personally I don't know what my game of the year is so many good games came out. Right now it is probably Skyrim.

Portal 2 will get some awards for sure but probably not a whole lot of GOTYs. I'd say skyrim and MW3 will get several. Honestly we'll probably have a much larger variety of different games getting GOTYs than seen in previous years.

Minecraft may get some mentions but probably few GOTYs it doesn't seem to be considered a 2011 game by most people. I loved that game but eh, There is just so much good newer stuff out now it will get over shadowed.

Honestly? I'd have a hard time this year. While there's been some great and some rubbish, I don't think there's a single title that stands above the rest.

If it's going by hype, Skyrim will take it with ease - but I don't think it deserves it because for some of the criticism already laid against it (Railroading, Bug-ridden, Do everything but reward specifics)

In the top 5 though.

Portal 2 is good, but suffers from a "once-through", and will be hated due to the Robots with Hats debacle.

SR3 is just TOO wacky.

Minecraft is cheating by being "live" for 3+years.

The Binding of Isaac is wonderful - but sick as a dog - and the final boss relies on you defeating the penultimate boss who's insanely hard.

What else?... MVC3? Spamtastic. Snore of Bitterfield - Annual Clonathon? Nah. Bats? Not as good as Asylum. L.A.Noire? Nice idea, poor execution. Deus EX? Nintendo Boss Monsters. Dead Island? Not as good as the trailer. DCUO? Oh man, how that failed :( Mortal Kombat? Not as bad as we thought. X-rays are a bit daft. Duke....hahhahahahahahahaha. WH40K? Warhammer 4 - Ok. Alice Madness: Returns? Wonderful...but Y U NO FIGHT BOSS? Sonic Generations? Loathe the hedgehog.

If I had to pick one, Bastion.

I have a question what do you mean Railroading and Do everything and reward specifics?

You can do all you want, but if you don't do this - they'll kick your ass.

If you don't spend time on combat skills I don't know why you would expect to succeed in combat?

But yeah I see what you mean, I have made several characters and playing can be as simply or complicated as you want. If you pick a focused character it is easy. I versatile character, however must use that versatility.

there are tons of games i would say that are better overall games than portal 2..

skyrim/deus ex:HR/witcher 2/bastion/BF3/SR3/minecraft/batman AA/terraria/dungeon defenders/uncharted 3/gears of war 3

and these ones i liked both other people didn't AS much on average: dragon age 2/dead island/fable 3

and these are just ones off of the top of my head, let alone what actually came across all systems
