Since the Orange Box has now been on the market long enough that i was able snag a copy for $40 (Australian
) it seems somewhat remedial and pointless to review an aspect of it at this late stage.
That being said, i've never played, or much less reviewed any form of Valve game before, and Portal seems as good a place as any to start.
Portal starts you off in a 'cell' reminiscent of something out of bubble-boy and after being left to throw your radio around for about a minute or so a friendly, female, robotic voice welcomes you and begins to boss you around.
From the time the first portal appears you cant help but be impressed by how visually intricate the game becomes. You're suddenly able to see the same room from another (and later 2 other) perspective(s) and later when you're able to place portals on roofs and floors, the whole testing facility turns into a bizarre, mind bending, playground....and little changes as the game goes on.
Gradually, as you work your way through them, the challenges increase in difficulty and you get more power over where your portals are placed, leading to such an incredibly brilliant ending that i wouldnt dare risk spoiling it.
The one aspect of the game i have not covered (i know theres more than one
) is the amazing sense of humor that this game has! Nearly every level will see you laughing out loud at the slightly psychotic voice, as well as some hilarious hidden rooms that have spawned a resounding chorus of "The cake is a lie"s accross the gamer universe.
This is by far the funniest game i've ever played, and perhaps the best in general (which is saying something)!!! and the song at the end made me laugh so much that i got some really weird looks from concerned onlookers, but i was so ecstatic that i didnt care!
Orange Box, if you dont have it, GET IT!!! even if it's just for portal!!!
and if you do have it.........GET ANOTHER ONE!!!!!
