Left4Dead campaign players were usually pretty friendly. I stayed the hell away from versus though. I don't really play with strangers anymore.

I consistently get positive post match messages in BlazBlue and Persona 4 Arena, I think it has something to do with how ArcSys designs their mechanics to be as unsalty as possible, the charming artstyle, the personality of all the characters and the lack of a fuckin' taunt button has something to do it with i'm sure.

I did go into BB and later P4A when it deigned to show its face across the pond after a fuckload of UMVC3 which may as well be renamed Salt: The Game everyone is post match raging messaging at you, ragequitting, spamming taunt after the match is over and a load more crap I cannot be arsed to deal with anymore.

I have to blame X-Factor. As hype as it is, a blatant comeback mechanic is by definition something that is going to rustle so many jimmies.

I have to perhaps take an exception with P4A because I assume the majority of people who bought it played Persona 4 and bought it to play their favourite characters and run through the story. Now anyone who has played Persona 4 will tell you that every character is great and liked by all, so if people get wrecked online by someone the fact it was done by best character ever Naoto Shirogane softens that blow immensely.

I mean people (mostly) don't even rage when you land an instakill on them... Which I do on spam happy Elisabeths rather often because she can inadvertently kill herself with Shuffle Time. Every one of her protectiles are so stupidly unsafe and I mean UNSAFE, I mean twice as bad as Vergil's Stinger unsafe.

I played a few matches with this one guy and he was using the EX'd fire thing to bring me in close from fullscreen for the ambiguous low/high hit. I managed to read it perfectly the once, popped back up and immediately did the instakill. Then we had a discussion about favourite characters, how Elisabeth is ironically Garbage Tier and the inevitable Inferno Divider reference came up because they just ripped it from BB and gave it to Yu and it's as aggravating as ever.

I never really noticed how over the top Yu's start up for Myriad Truths was until that match... He slowly points his sword at the ground and plunges it through his Persona card while dropping to his knees. BroSwagtagonist reborn.

I was playing UMVC3 in online player matches . I went up against a guy who was obviously new to the game . After beating him 3 times ( with 1 perfect ) without breaking a sweat , he messaged me saying he was new and terrible at the game . What i decided to do afterwards was go to character select and go random all against his team . This leaded to more interesting matches both for me and him . After every 3 games i chose random all again . After about 20 games , he sent me a message saying thanks , and that he learned a lot .

Hey Versus is pretty friendly a good amount of the time. You can start up a conversation with the Smoker who is killing you and this one lobby the other day was suddenly filled with good natured racist jokes because we were playing (best campaign no question) No Mercy and in the finale Louis got IMMEDIATELY charged off the roof the second the Survivor team dropped down onto the helipad

The teams were then switched and the exact same thing happened to the other team's Louis in the same spot by another bloody Charger.

Bow chicka bow wow.

OP: I never played much online multiplayer, but generally speaking Star Wars: The Old Republic was a nice bunch, random people were constantly teaming up for brief missions or side bosses. Everybody goes their own way at the end but the brief fellowship was always very amiable.

Oh hell no. I'm glad you've had a positive experience on there, but half the time I just got yelled at by intolerant rude people. No one was playing for fun. Left4Dead2 versus in particular seems to have far more offenders than the original. Did you play on PC or Xbox? I played on PC.

Well about half the friends I have on XBL I met though online games so I would have to say most of those were good experiences. Unfortunately, I can only remember like one case. I was playing on Modern Warfare 3 and was once again on team shit head so all my teammates were either dumb as rocks or had quit out. I basically spent the rest of the match sniping the living crap out of the enemy team and fully expected to be bashed for it post game. To my surprise, one of the other guys complimented my ability to somehow keep his entire team at bay most of the match. He and I spent the entire next match sniping each other out, had a great time, and have been friends since.

I rarely do online video gaming since I'm in no fit state to open myself up to the potential abuse out there, even posting on the escapist can be hit and miss.

The only time I've had a nice online gaming experience outside the confines of my guild on WoW was playing Journey with someone who patiently waited for me before every cut-scene despite my dithering about and having no idea what to do. He pointed me in the direction of some scarf shards when I was running low as well.

It's a shame there's not more games that allow that kind of interaction, I could do with some cheering up u_u

My positive experience was when I was playing an MMO, ROHAN Online.
I was having a PVP match with this guy who after the first few attacks just stood there. Anyhow, after me attacking him one-sidedly for a few moments he laughed at me and said "Ha! Your damage output is pitiful." to which another player in an invisible state sneak-killed him in one go and said "What about mine?" before just casually sauntering off.
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in a video game. It was just such an absurd and unlikely situation.

Yeah I was on PC. It probably helped that I (completely ironically I assure you) changed my Steam name to Captain YoloSwag and a lot of people find it funny.

A lot of people also kick me from a lobby the moment I join in normal campaigns because really, would you entrust your team's safety to Captain YoloSwag?

Well I play a lot of League and there is nothing uglier than full on rage in a League game. Absolutely everything looks magical compared to that XD

I've collected a share of gaming buddies over league of legends, and before that some people for an old shooter called Warrock.

When I was playing Dungeon Fighter, I swear there were people who were in-game stalking me.
Didn't mind it too much, since I seemed to get pretty good free stuff. XD

I was playing an mmo once and my low level character ended up dying. A high level happened to be in the area and revived me. He ended up helping me learn the game and we played together from then on. Even getting to the point where we'd share our valuable items with each other without a thought. Eventually we both left the game and kept in touch with Xfire, mmo hopping together. Even now, a few years later we are still friends and I'm talking with him as I type this.

Made some good friends via videogame and anime streams.
I've gotten lucky and had a good ratio of positive Dark Souls messages.
TF2 community was generally nice (don't play as often now so I don't know), had a couple bad experiences in CS: Source games.

My League of Legends matches have worst experience of any online gaming I have ever had, very uptight bunch I've found. This isn't even counting the trolls. Thankfully I have enough fun with the game.

DOTA2. I should preface this by saying I'm not very good at MOBA games. I often forget to use my items, abilities, ulti ect. I miss some team fights. I'm not very good at last hitting. I lose track of my character in a team fight and get killed often.

I'm not completely useless at the game, I know how to play and won't single handedly drag the team down. And sometimes I'll do very well if I'm focused.

Anyway, exposition aside I met some friendly players last night who were up for an off topic chat, laughing about things, giving a little gl hf at the beginning and just being friendly. They were even giving advice without yelling WTF at people. I got paired with one guy 3 games in a row, and we would discuss previous games, and just chat.

It was a nice change from "You fed them WTF, you're shit, kill yourself". That stuff doesn't bother me but it doesn't help either.

I've gotten onto two TF2 highlander teams without ever applying simply from having a great time playing with them in public matches.

That aside, the best online experience I've ever had actually happened maybe two months ago. I was browsing around my friends list for someone to play some TF2 with when I found someone who I couldn't even remember where I added them from (I think it was from a tumblr or something). I said "what the hell" and joined her game. After she left that game, I just followed her into a different one. Then I got a message from her asking me if I was following her. "Yeah, I just randomly picked someone from my friends list who I didn't know to play some with to get to know them better. If this is bothering you though I'll be happy to leave."

Her response: "Oh yay! Nah, it's alright. Come join me and my friends in voice chat." A few seconds later I joined voice chat, received like five different friend requests, and now I play with these awesome people almost every night!

Whatever, just wash your hands.
The one that comes to mind for me was, way back when I used to play wow, before the burning crusade expansion. I was doing the pvp grind, when you had to pvp for an insane amount of time to rank up. Anyway, I was doing a lot of pvp on my warrior and was sitting in the place in org where you would queue for pvp matches when I got a tell from an alliance player on a horde alt saying "oh wow, its you." Turns out he was one of the alliance players I would go up against frequently who was also doing the pvp grind, through him I ended up meeting a good number of the alliance who I regularly would fight, it turns out I was rather well known to the alliance.
