So, I just got back from watching Superman with a friend, and during the previews for upcoming films, I noticed a strange advertisement. I didn't catch the whole thing, so I'm hoping someone else out there can clear it up for me.

There were two announcements to switch off cellphones, one being an ad for Despicable Me 2...
but the second announcement had a flash of a unicorn, a message to let your cellphone dream while the movie is playing, and advice to text/ search for a 4 or 5 digit number after the film.

I don't recall the number they flashed on-screen, and a search online isn't showing me any news. Did anyone else catch this announcement? Showing an image of a unicorn while talking about letting a machine dream can't just be a coincidence, can it?

I always thought that a movie sequel would be bad. That story was finished. It was tied up in a nice bow. Leave it there.

I have however always thought a high budget TV show set in the universe would be amazeballs. If anyone here played the PC game you'll remember how awesome it was to learn more about being a blade runner and exploring the city. There are many tales to be told there.

Well, I had heard for a while that Ridley Scott was kicking around some ideas and trying to assemble a writing team and cast. After Prometheus, I thought revisiting Blade Runner was next on the agenda. I just saw an article about it last month, actually.

After searching a little more online, I think I've found that the announcement was for some gimmick that Sprint has been doing for the last year. They compile data from your cellphone to create a bizarre "dream" video. They advertise the thing during movie previews.

Which leads me to wonder why I thought I saw a unicorn in that ad. I guess I'm a replicant? Still, that would have been a neat marketing strategy.

Where the hell would they go with BladeRunner 2? It's not like it would work well as a sequel. I wouldn't mind a remake of the film, with the proviso that they changed the ending so that it fit the message of the book more.

Harrison Ford running away with his sex slave is pretty screwed up. Also I don't remember anywhere in the movie that he actually buys an animal/mechanical animal.

Who knows? Maybe they'll actually make something good out of the concept this time.

Oh, that'd be awesome. Get RPatt instead of someone old like Harrison Ford, the Replicants all talk in pop culture references for no reason, and all female characters must prance in skimpy clothing for no adaquately explained reason.

...

Actually, RPatt wouldn't be a bad choice, given a certain scene in Blade Runner which wouldn't seem too out of place in Twilight.

OK. I took Superman in good humor. Blade Runner gets remade, I'm going to murder someone.
I'll start dulling the spoons, because they are going to have to die ugly for this abomination.

Are you sure it wasn't sponsored by Sprint? Because I've had ads from them for a while, showing a bunch of sounds and images and asking, "When you shut your phone off, does it dream? Text blah blah blah, and then shut your phone off to find out"

So apparently it's just a phone advert. Mystery solved!

But if there was a Blade Runner film, I'd expect it to be a 'Total Recall' style thing that has only a sliver of the original plot and puts bums on seats based on the name alone. Also reboots are the new innovation these days, so it wouldn't be a wild idea.

Too bad everything else sucked.

I honestly do not see the appeal, I've been the Final Cut on Bluray and I don't get why this is regarded as the best of Sci Fi, it's painfully shit.
Which one is that? There's like 4 or 5 version of differing quality.

TBH, though, good music, nice cityscape, and a speech about tears in the rain. Everything else is just another 80's movie.

Ghost in the Shell is always said to be very much inspired by it...in that they had a similar nice cityscape and comparable good music. Story was nothing the same,

Blade Runner 2 is a stupid idea, and can never work, the story doesn't really leave anything open for a sequel. And Harrison Ford is way too old for it now.

Some sort of remake of Blade Runner, I also don't like the idea of, but there's no reason why it couldn't be done.

In case you didn't know, Ridley Scott has expressed interest in returning to Blade Runner at some point, going so far as to specify that, if he does so, the story will likely take place before the events of the first movie. There is a relevant IMDB entry that has little to no info, but I seem to recall that they had ruled out Harrison Ford being involved, despite rumours to the contrary.

However, all this was before Prometheus was released - maybe in the meantime they've changed their minds, who knows.

Ah, thanks. Not sure how I could have forgotten about that, but it's many years since I saw Blade Runner.

Yeah, didn't really know he was planning a prequel, but maybe Prometheus will put them off. That could have been a fairly good standalone sci-fi movie, but it was forced into being an AWFUL Alien prequel.
