After that Affluenza asshole got only ten years of probation for DUI-caused manslaughter, I stopped getting surprised. Seriously, anyone else would've gotten at least a few years in jail, yet this asshole gets to stay out of jail that time on the grounds of "he was too spoiled, he didn't know any better."

Maybe there are other factors that I don't know about (as was established, I'm not that knowledgeable about law), but still bullcrap. Either way, it was established that the thread got derailed, and it shouldn't go any further off the rails.
Ten years probation might not seem like much but it is no walk in the park. He had serious restrictiond on what he was allowed to do which meant that he had to majorly change his life or go to prison for a long time. Sure enough, last year he broke his probation by going to a party with alcohol. There was some crazy shit where he fled the country but was extradited and is sitting now in jail waiting for new sentencing.

The thing is that, and apologies if my lack of legal knowledge makes me seem like an idiot, wouldn't most just be sent straight to prison? He got a delayed prison sentence (and he basically wouldn't have any jail time if he weren't an idiot).

Martial Arts is more about control and discipline. If you are accidentally hurting people, you haven't listened. But its likely your mentor wouldn't teach you certain things as they are aware of people impact in society and they could see your not ready.

If you think bullies will be stopped by violence, you haven't met a bully. When physically aggravated, they will generally round up their gang and have a beat down. What you see on TV is absolute nonsense.

I once was silly and stepped in to protect a woman from a verbal fight. I was lucky the attacker had self control, as he kept a knife at stomach for what felt like an incredibly long time. No amount of martial arts would help in that situation.
