Out of the 10th Anniversary Firefly Reunion panel came a surprise announcement which will delight Browncoats the world over:

Bleeding Cool was on the scene when Joss Whedon and The Science Channel?s Debbie Myers confirmed to a packed room of journalists that if the planned Firefly reunion movie performs well that we can expect a full Firefly series reboot. And, it seems as if Whedon plans to wipe the slates clean and bring back the entire original cast.

?The opening sequence [of the Firefly reboot] is a conversation between Wash and Book,? said Whedon quite, quite seriously to the amazed Firefly cast and crew on the press panel with him Friday in San Diego.

?Have I never talked to you about this?? He asked Nathan Fillion, seated to his left.

To this point, Whedon has seldom discussed the decision to kill off the characters portrayed by Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass in the 2005 release, Serenity. To critics and fans, alike, this decision provided a finality which indicated that it would be unlikely that a reunion or reboot would ever be possible.

Now we know, that perception was incorrect.

Some are supposing that because Whedon followed the comment with an offhanded remark about rebooting the series with a younger cast (?Zac Effron as Simon??) that bringing back Wash and Book is more of Whedon?s patented ?snark? and are not taking the concept of a reboot seriously.

Not so; immediately upon confirming that, yes, he would like to head back to the ?Verse again, The Science Channel?s General Manager, Debbie Myers, stated emphatically, ?We can help you with that!?

Regardless, it is clear that even after a decade, the impact of the short-lived sci fi series is still being felt by both fans and the cast.

?[Doing Firefly] taught me how to act,? said Nathan Fillion of his involvement with the show, ?Out of [the show] I got some of the best work I?ve ever done and a movie, I really couldn?t ask for more.?

?I have much more perspective,? said Alan Tuydk of watching the series again for the first time, ?Everything is a discovery again after ten years.?

Bleeding Cool will continue to work to confirm the exact details of the promised reboot and the confirmed movie. Stay tuned!

If this actually happens it will be the greatest day of my young life. I'll be in my bunk.

Hm, I'm a little torn about this. On one hand Firefly has a very interesting universe as well as a diverse and likable cast of characters...on the other hand I simply cannot stand Malcolm Reynolds. I think he's a prick...seriously I like Jayne more than I like him. Jayne is a well developed and three dimensional character while Mal is all over the freaking place.

That's the first time I've heard someone compliment Jayne about his character. Props to you.

OT: While I certainly feel that the Firefly universe was cut short too early (and I want to see a conclusion to the Mal/inara thing) they'd have to base it before the movie to show why Book left etc. Also, because of Serenity (movie) it's a series that will have to have a definite ending. You cannot continue the show without Wash and Book

Well he actually gets development. When he goes into that hospital and finds out that they did something to River's brain, it's very clear that he regrets his earlier decision to sell him out, to the point that when Mal was about to throw him out an air lock he told him not to tell Simon and River what he did. Besides, I can't be the only one who smiled when he put on that hat from his mom and he looked at it like he was a kid who had just found that one special toy that he had always wanted under the Christmas tree.

I have never actually watched Firefly (take away my nerd badge), I can say that some shows are beloved because they were cancelled, and bringing them back will never work as well as anybody hopes.

This could be an exception, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. If they're using the same characters and the same cast, then... are we just going to have different stories? Different backgrounds for the characters? Because the more... er... fanatic... followers of the series would probably be pretty put-off by that, while revisiting the characters as they're already established is a bit difficult too, especially if we assume Serenity is meant to be canon and therefor Wash and Book are dead.

At the same time, it may not have the same magic that it did during its first run, and part of why it became such a smash cult hit was precisely because it had so few episodes and ended so abruptly. While I would love another season or two, I think anything longer than that would almost certainly drain the series hollow much like what eventually happened to House.

I'm conflicted. I want this... but I don't.

Ah yes. The hospital, the hat and the end of Jaynestown where the random takes a bullet (literally) for Jayne, are probably his greatest character moments. Then there's the Vera scene. I just cannot do anything but laugh at that scene.

To me, the word "reboot" implies that they would change the canon a bit, so the movie may be a non-issue.

While I am afraid to trust this news, for fear that I will only be disappointed, it does make me very happy to think about it...
Time for a re-watch marathon.

Nope, not going to get my hopes up for anything. It's all just blathering talk at this point. Until I see a trailer, it's all BS.
