Also, I like the tone but then I realise it's Lionsgate so cue the stereotypical teen drama of shit dad, love triangle romance, nerds being bullied, Asian kid the silent but talented one, adults playing teens and... am i missing anything?
Isn't that pretty much Power Rangers in a nutshell anyway? Adults playing teens, highschool melodrama, bullies, etc. That's, like every bit of PR that I can recall ever seeing. Granted I didn't really watch the show, but it came on right before a show I did want to watch, so I would frequently catch the last bit of it. And it seemed to be exactly what you just accused Lionsgate of being stereotypical of. So it sounds like a match made in heaven to me. xD
OT: It looks reasonably ok to me. As a non-fan (never saw an entire episode of the show I don't think), I really have no vested stake in this movie, but one of my friends is a fan of the show. He said that it seems like they are trying to siphon out the campy silliness of MMPR, and try and tell a more "real" story about them. Which he and I both are fine with. While he didn't mind the camp as a kid watching the show, I can attest that the overly Japanese-esque, campiness of the show is absolutely what turned me off from even considering the show as something I'd want to watch. So I'm actually looking forward to the direction they seem to be taking this. It's still got some goofy to it, but it's also got some more "real world" flavor to it.
Which honestly, I find interesting. I have 0 interest in MMPR, but when my friend showed me this trailer, I was genuinely curious. It looked like something I might find enjoyable to watch. So, yeah, kudos to the trailer team, for making it look like something I might enjoy. Of course, it's just a trailer, and the movie might totally suck, but I'm willing to be slightly optimistic about it for now.
