Pre owned games vs buying new

This isn't going to be a rant about why we should all buy new games vs preowned or the validity of online passes as I have discussed that elsewhere.

What I am going to say is that I believe that retailers are punishing us gamers on two fronts by giving us next to sod all for our games when we trade them but then expecting us to pay through the nose to buy pre owned games in their store!

They also seem to be trying to encourage new sales by making pre owned copies of newer games only slightly less than the new ones!

I saw a copy of gears of war 3 (seriously, who traded this great game in already?) in my local HMV for £38.98 pre owned when it was only £38.99 new! Seriously, HMV, only 1p difference!!

That wasn't quite as bad as game next door though, who had dead island at £39.99 new and £42.99 pre owned! I had to laugh at that one....

Anyone else got any examples of grossly overcharged pre owned games compared to their new equivalent (especially when taking charges for online passes into account)?

I bought Gears 3 at an HMV for £38 where the sales assistant told me I'd get £35 back for it if I were to trade it in within a week. Though far too good a game to trade in that fast, even if it would have meant I'd only spent £3 in total for it.

What's worse is when I went to buy Reach ages ago they were selling a preowned copy for £25 and a new copy for £20.

Check out the price of Modern Warfare 2 new, then check it preowned. Pretty big difference.

I went into EB games with X-Men legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse. They were selling it for like $65 new. Can anyone guess how much they wanted to give me for my UNOPENED still in the fucking shrink wrap copy? Four whole dollars.

(I know this will get me some HUGE Flak but) Personally I hate used games, but that's just me. The only real "used games" I buy are usually just me selling a game to a friend for super dirt cheap or on one occasion I traded with my cousin, I traded Oblivion for Jade Empire and Fable 1.
I have a select few copies of used games since I have been on "nostalgia" crazes a few times and you can't find SNES games brand new without buying from someone who has them. I will always try my best to find a game new somewhere (unless it can't be done)

Just yesterday I got Xenoblade Chronicles pre-owned for $50 which is half the price if you get a new one from JB Hi-Fi. I thought that was a pretty good deal.

But I do agree that places like EB Games will tend to have newer pre-owned games at virtually the same cost as the new ones but if people can save $5 - $10 I think they will. They also often have 'buy 2 pre-owned games and get the 3rd free' type deals.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope pre-owned was only $30 NZD less than what you'd expect to pay for a new copy. You're right, seems like they are encouraging new copy sales.

I mentioned this in a previous thread. At least in Canada, the online used price is full of it. The difference in price for MW2 when you actually walk into a store is only $5. I suppose you could buy online to get that price, but who buys physical games online?

I actually just bought MW2 a few weeks ago, which is the only reason I know this.

If it had one of those $10 online passes, you would end up paying $5 more buying used.

I call shenanigans.

EB games is retarded.

Compare the preowned games at EB to new games at Dungeon Crawl.
Free shipping australia wide.

If you still think EB is ever worth shopping at, you deserve to get ripped off.

I think the only grossly over-charged game I've seen on the pre-owned pile is Dead Island which, as OP said is £42.99 but from what I can tell a lot of factors are given to pricing- Time (how long it's been released), popularity and how many copies they can get their hands on.
Though I think the only advice I can give is: Go to a pre-owned store for a cheaper/slightly older/harder to find game, go to a regular game store for a newer release.

I tend to put a lot of love to pre-owned games and depend on them a lot, just yesterday I got BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger for £5. Pretty good in my opinion. And 3 games the week before for £10.

Same happened to me I went to Game in Ireland sold out of new dead island at 49.99 but got preowned at 52.99, HMV along the road had preowned for 42.99 but no new, was sold out in all the game shops in cork at the time.
I asked the shop assistant in game why it cost more and they said that's just the price they have been given.... They are normally ok for trade ins but that's quite a rip off.

Gamestop wanted to give me 25 cents for GTA3 back when San Andreas came out, but if it wasn't for used games i wouldn't be able to play much of anything. I just don't trade anymore, its easier just to keep them.

If you still had an unopened still in the shrink wrap game why wouldnt you just return the game wherever it was purchased instead of trying to sell it?
I had gotten it as a Christmas present when my brother came home a few months after Christmas, and by the time he got home to give me the game he didn't have a receipt or remember where he got it.

If a used copy is available I'll typically go for it. It depends on the replay value as well, something like Battlefield 3 I'd pay full price for as I know I'll put a decent amount of time into it. I'd buy more games brand new if they weren't so excessively priced, and there's nothing more disappointing than paying full price for a game that takes less than a week to complete.

Yeah Gamestop is being awful hilarious about their prices, 55.99 for a used game? Funny I remember PS2 games 'not too long ago' being 39.99. You know reason to buy? Then again their new copies are always open when I try to buy so whatever.

Usually when I sell I sell to estarland (a website), why? They gave me $38 for Metroid Other M when gamstop offered $8. That's a BIG BLOODY difference. So instead of getting 8 shitty dollars to do nothing with I got most of the new Earth Defense Force game paid off.

On Future Shop's website they are selling the Xbox version of Super Street Fighter 4 for $19.99. They are selling the used version of Super Street Fighter 4 for 19.99.

It gets worse. A new copy (same game) on the PS3 is 19.99. A used copy is...wait for it...24.99.
