The worst part about this is, that the store gets all the money on used and preowned games. New games are bought from the manufacturer, and buying them for say, $45, they mark it up to $50, and get a $5 profit. However, the games traded are basically their own stock, so when they sell games for, say, $35, they're the ones getting the profit. Not the rest of the industry.

Stores take on the risk on purchasing back pre-owned merchandise. It's not as though its subsidised by the manufacturers. But their bonus is that they'd make more profit as they wouldnt have to give as much back the manufacturer.

They're also governed by the obvious need for supply and demand. Why would they sell you a used week old game for anything less than a fraction of its original value when they've got loads of those sitting on their shelves already and likewise why would they give you back over the odds later on when there's dozens of people wanting to offload their out of date title but no one wanting to buy it.

While their purchase value is almost always way less than the shelf value, you have an option. Take it or leave it. As for buying pre-owned, the same rule applies but with one main difference. If you leave it long enough then you'll usually get it significantly cheaper.

Take a choice, but it full price when it comes out because you haven't got the patience to wait. Or leave it a month and get it at anything upto %50 less.

Ultimately, you have the choice. You might not like it, but at least its there. The alternative is cc£40 every single time.
