Prefered method of RTS battling

Hello there.

Just wondering how the Escapist's resident generals and admirals like to command.

Me personally? I prefer to build up massive strength before making my moves but I will deploy units to skirmish and hold the line as long as possible while I make a secondary, much stronger line of defense. The plan is that the second line holds until I've got a superior force ready to launch and then I strike. Not that I do this all the time, its just a trend I've been following. Also I love drowning the enemy with indirect fire to cover the advance.

I like the "Gather up and shoot all the mortars you can find until there aren't any left in the entire world," strategy. Very effective, ifyou have the resources.

i prefer to use small strike forces of units people dont think are threats and just kill them with my superior tactics

Depending on how much room for maneuvering and how in depth you can get with the tactics I like to divide up into a few small groups and hit various strategic points and fall back until I can mount an attack that wipes out the enemy all together.


The basic idea is to constantly be attacking the enemy somewhere, preferably someplace that has strategic importance like a building that produces units or holds/gathers resources. As soon as you have a big enough group you come out swinging then fall back once your target is down then send in another group as the first group falls back to regroup and get reinforcements. Eventually you end up with enough small groups to make up one massive group large enough to go in and totally wipe em out. If you are able to hit quickly enough and keep the pressure on it doesn't take long.

Harass. Constantly harass. Strike their construction projects, hit their resource gathering. Don't do much damage, just slow them down, distract them. The difference builds up so fast, you get way ahead in resource in development then suddenly those little harassments become full-out rushes.

Divide and conquor. Expand as early and as often as possible, scout out as many expands as I can and try to deny my opponant any expansions. If it works I have twice the income my opponant has and I have virtually no chance of losing unless I screw up catastrophically.

turtle up the base, and tech like mad. also try to get ny arty i have into a position to harass the enemy at long range, with a counter attack ready to defent the arty

I don't do PvP in RTS gaming (because I'm not very good at it) so my strategy against bots tends to be "amass an enormous defence and economy and then overkill the enemy with the most overpowered expensive units" ala most RTS games I've played or "get the sneaky unit to attempt to kill everyone" ala Colonel Burton from Command and Conquer Generals.

i always try to get one expansion asap and pump out units, while building afew defensive structures.

when the enemy attacks i counter.
by then i should have a steady enough income. so i start getting upgrades depending on my units and just keep harrassing after that first counter.

then finish off by expanding as much as possible and trying to control the map.

I'm a turtle... sorta.

I turtle and then I build giant mechs under my turtle and send a large army of near-invincible mechs towards the enemy and then let the little guys make the hole the mechs made a lot larger... and keep on pouring in after that.

If on something like the Total war games then I divide and conquer quote literally. I make sure that the number of troops I'm fighting against has a greater surface area compared to mine so their losses are always greater than mine and therefore they flee a long time before my men even get tired.

Set up layers of defenses, starting with kill zones made up of the weak stuff. from there add fixed defenses and move the troops outwards to set up new kill zones and to act as an early warning system and too scout. Then start expanding into new resource pockets. Keep adding to these units until they are made up of a massive mixed horde of stuff and then CHARGE across the map and steam roller everything.
Starcraft and Red Alert are still my favourate RTS games, but the Homeworld series is the best.

Build enough tanks to keep my engineer safe and build turrets outside their base early in the game. Further away a mini base to build more tanks and engineers to constantly build and repair turrets.

Depends on the game.

In DOW I slowly expand to more strategic points while making an expanding ring of turrets. Then, once I've got a relic I'll move in with a ridiculous crushing force.

In SC2 I usually go for some early siege tanks just within range of the enemies choke surrounded by some 'rines. Then I follow up with a stupid chunk of Thors.

In Red Alert 3 I throw helicopters at people until I win.

In Achron, I scratch my head for a couple of minutes while I try to reconcile the fact that I can play two races in two time periods simultaneously. Then my head explodes.

I make the units I like, make many of them, and then stroll.

If that isn't possible, I will make groups of units designed for certain roles, and then make everyone prioritise on the things they are designed for.
