I suck at RTS so my strategy amounts to 1: Build a ton of units and concentrate on resource collection and don't pay any attention to my enemy and 2: march my entire army in the general direction of thier base and hope I win all the while neglecting to build anything else and manage resources cos I'm too busy making sure that my army doesn't get hammered. So basically I can't multitask and I lose a lot.

Edit: Reading the posts in this thread makse me really want to play an RTS because it sounds like a lot of fun. But then I start playing and I screw up badly and get my ass handed to me by an easy AI. I wish I was good at RTS but you can't have everything right?

Depends on which RTS. With things like Starcraft, I stay aggressive, 'cause you almost have to. It scouts for you, it damages enemy infrastructure and units, if it is well coordinated it prevents the enemy from attacking for a while, and whilst the battle rages I have valuable time where both my enemy and I are somewhat distracted to send in special units through their back door and harass their forces.
In games like Sins of a Solar Empire, I will build up a small raiding fleet, and gather as many worlds and as much tech and economy as possible. I almost always have the lowest military strength in the game - right up until the final hour when I build most of my ships and deploy them against the enemy.
Age of Empires I massively turtle; Dig my way into the trees and build Castles and Towers along the way to slow enemies down whilst keeping my siege weapons deployed nearby to stop the enemy from drilling through, and having cavalry and archers ready to stop any ground force intrusion.

In Total War games I do a fast land grab, then settle in to turtle for a bit. I try to make myself part of a mega-alliance so I won't be DOW'ed, and get busy upgrading my economy and military, in that order. I don't attack until I massively outnumber the enemy, and I use Blitzkrieg tactics when I do attack- massive, overwhelming force at multiple locations. As for battle strategy, mass archer volleys, pin with infantry, finish off with cavalry charges.

I prefer a creeping advance from an iron-hard fortress. In the first minutes of the game I have a brief Blitzkrieg to claim as many resources and as much land as possible, then I hunker down and laugh as the enemy sends wave after wave of grunts to be dashed against my concrete walls like the futile lapping of ripples on a pond... well, sometimes the enemy uses aircraft and artillery, and then I'm screwed.

But, yeah, I'm definitely a base builder.

I use long range to systematically break down their defenses with a last minute rush of infintry to slaughter the survivors

I dunno, just build up a large army, and upgrade the hell out of them?

I suck at Multiplayer RTS's..

Basically whatever the game's variant of Blitzkrieg is. I like to gather a large force of mobile and powerful units and then blast my way past all defenses. Before I do that though I like to have all my attackers upgraded and my base equipped with automatic defenses in case things go sour and I need to regroup real fast.

I tend to be a slow starter as I focus on base building and tech. Once I do get going on an offensive force, I tend to strongly favor long distance ground units with air units to support them and/or take out key units.

I usually expand aggressively and build up my basses while building op early units to counter my enemy's troops. I will constantly send scouts to evaluate my enemy forces. Once I see the make up of their army, I start building counter units and rush them with all my early units, I follow this up with a series of light attacks to test my enemy and to give them a false sense of confidence. When he makes his move I crush his army while building more units, and while he is busy recovering I send over a super unit to wreck my enemies base. It is a really successful strategy.

Fast expand if I can, into a macro-heavy play building a huge army, while keeping note of the expansions around the map to control resources. Know the location of their army, scout them early and frequently, react to their army comp and build a counter. Macro like a fucking god because if your units are evenly matched counter-wise more shit>less shit, and be as greedy as they let you. If they turtle, you starve them. If they're super greedy, you harass, darting in and out because they can't defend everything at once. If they play safe, then you have to put effort into scouting and find out what you can counter them with. Keep a presence on the map, make them feel like they're under a lot of pressure, it'll screw with their head. Know what's standard in the matchup you're playing, so you have a starting point to go from with your opener and your scouting.

Most of the RTS games I play, I´m quite the turtler. The best example would be Warcraft 3. I just loved being all turrents and no units, tho most of the time i lost.

Though in some other games, like the Total War series, i do love an awesome charge and quick flanking attacks. And attacking castles? Oh boy, now that is my definition of fun.

Get a small infantry force out within the 1st 5 minutes and then just keep the pressure up with constant assaults.
Currently low Bronze on SC2 and it works against pretty much everyone, save the few canny zerg players.

meh. RTS games hardly have any tactic in them if you ask me. Just the regular Metagame with countering. Its a bit sad but you cant apply actual tactics in most RTS games.

Turtly McTurtling. SupCom taught me shields and anti missile defence with enough turrets will deflect even experimental Bullshit ships

Pretty much this, Build up good Defence, then let the turrets, and sheilds and any other defences do the work while i max out the Pop Cap xD

I love playing the defensive, especially in Star Wars Galactic Battle Grounds <3

In Impossible Creatures (well used to, don't have it anymore... =\) i would build about 3 to 4 rows of Soundwave Towers, and at the back of them some Anti Air Turrets, and at the front of the Soundwave Towers, about another 2 rows of Bramble Fence...

Nothing could get past xD

Sadly, the current defiition of "strategy" makes me sick. Whenn I watch starcraft tournaments on MLG and they start talking about the "brilliant strategys" the players are using, I ussaly roll my eyes, try to shut down my brain and simply enjoy the action.

When I want to see strategy in use, I want to lay ambushes, fall back and lure them into traps, play tricks on them, use the enviroment, sabotage and strikes from the shadows and eventually win by use of superior strategy against a far superior troop number.

Sadly, none of these are really valid in modern RTS games like SC2 when the "key to victory" consists of studying builds and buildorders by heart and playing the "if he thinks that Im thinking that he is thinking that I am going to use this build" game with your enemy. *sighs*

If someone is looking for me, I will be in my lonely little corner of sadness, play some Shogun 2 and wait for the day when propper use of strategy becomes valid over micro-management and build-remembering.
