Long range. I love the power trip of lining up my crosshairs on an unsuspecting target who's exploding head is their companions' first warning and then picking off the rest of them one by one as they run around in a panic, aware of my presence but completely unable to retaliate in any meaningful way.

I get the feeling that this is the sort of conversation that would get me arrested in real life...

Short range.

I want to see the fear in my opponents eyes when they realise that these are the last few seconds they will be spending on this god-forsaken earth, muahahahaMUAHAHAHA...ARHAHAHAHAHAAHA!

*cough*

Sorry about that.

Really its dependant on the area I'm in half the time long range weapons are fairly useless do to level set up so I tend to stick to mid range guns that have some reac if at all possible, usually its not too much trouble to get an smg to hit at longer ranges and they really shine when things get in close, if possible though I do love to snipe and if the pistols are decent close range isn't too bad its the mid range you've really got to watch then.

Medium to long range. 50-300 meters. Preferably with a gun. Firearms: Because it's much easier to be brave from far away.

This is both in games and real life. I'm useless with my hands, but i can shoot.

Whichever range the explosives of that game are made for.

For instance, close range in tf2, but long range in cod.

Close to medium range.
I've never been a fan of sniper rifles, I like to get to a decent distance where pretty much any gun is effective and then open up. Assault rifles, Sub-machine guns, shotguns and pistols.

Assuming we are talking about video games, it really depends on the game. However I am most comfortable in medium to close range.

It depends on how cool the melee attacks are. From a practical standpoint, it makes more sense to engage enemies at a distance, but if the close quarters combat is sufficiently awesome, then I may specialize in it just for the awesome factor.

Generally, if the crosshairs are wider than the target, I'm too far away (for obvious reasons).

Depends on the genre.

In RTS games I prefer long range bombardment to minimize my casualties.
In FPS games I prefer short range attacks, close enough to get up close and personal but far away enough to retreat if needed.

Close range! I like to be close to where the action takes place.
Even in FPS I'd run close to the enemies and melee them as often as possible.

Melee (Magical Daggers?, blackjacks) and short range (short bows and shotguns).

If I can see the enemy, I'm already too close. I preffer to do things from as far away and with as little direct involvement as possible under the game's rules.

In games: I sure do like me some sniping. Especially counter-sniping; watching some guy line up his scope at my team-mates and then blowing him away is great fun.

In real life? Well, [insert unsubstantiated self-aggrandising claim of master-level proficiency in Oriental combat system here].

Close range, I love fucking shit up with powerful close range attacks (melee, shotguns, flamethrowers).

Which is why Scout, Spy and Demoknight happen to be my favorite TF2 classes.

Distance, as far away as I can get, behind some nice thick walls mashing the "nuke the living $#%@ out of them" button!!

In games i like long range; sniping for FPS, mage-like characters for RPG, and having lots of ranged units is really fun for RTS.
In real life, i would say close-combat, as i've done some fencing so i could use a sword in a fight and i have used a bow before with some success but compared to modern guns, a bow is hardly a long-range weapon.
