Preorders: Have you been screwed?

So Aliens: Colonial Marines came out, and it's being widely panned by nearly every critic in sight...

The latest video put up by TB has made me think.

According to him, A:CM reached TOP SELLER status shortly before the game was released.

Unlike our console bretheren, PC pre-orders on steam are a much bigger initial investment, and is usually a permanent commitment. Console players can reserve their own copy for as little as 5$ and can cancel anytime. Even after release. Or can at least sell their games.
Whereas PC players need to pay it all off immediately. And usually cannot get refunds after release. And of course, cannot sell it.

Now I imagine, that lots of those people who helped A:CM ascend to Top Seller status are going to be fucking pissed. Or probably already are. And probably feel as though they've been screwed.

Some might say that there's plenty of info available prior to a game's release that should tell you whether or not a game will be good or bad. Or at least whether or not it's worth preordering.
But as TB mentions in the video above, there are such things as press embargos which deny the release of any game reviews. The only teasers and previews we see are cherry-picked pieces of gameplay hand crafted by marketing peeps themselves. Naturally, we cannot see the BIG PICTURE of a game prior to it's release when things like this are happening.

Now these days, it's becoming pretty rare to get so much as a demo before a game comes out. And devs might even begin rationalizing this sort of thoughtlessness like this:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122056-Game-Dev-Claims-Demos-Hurt-Game-Sales

So there you go. Demos are becoming rare. Press embargos make it hard to learn about a game from sources you trust. All of this is making pre-orders (especially on the PC end of things) a much bigger gamble than it ever was before.

Now that A:CM is released, embargo lifted, and the floodgates have opened; unleashing a torrent of negativity washing down on this game from every direction the likes of which I haven't seen in quite a while. Since..... Duke Nukem: Forever? Huh.

Being screwed into buying a shitty game is one thing. The entire concept of pre-order exclusives is a whole 'nother beast. A beast which is starting to become larger, and uglier.

So, escapists. Has anyone been screwed into pre-ordering a game that turned out to suck?

And if you are the type of person who pre-orders, what is it that makes you do so? (Especially you PC Gamers)

And if you don't fall under any of these categories. Whats your opinion on this subject?
Is it starting to become a bigger problem, or is this whole thing just a fluke that will wash over and be forgotten and people will go back to their blind pre-ordering ways?

Zombie Driver was rather bad, but that is about it that I can think of. Best Buy screwed me over on my preorder of New Vegas. They told me in would be at my house the day it was released, but it took another week. On top of that, they gave me the wrong preorder pack (which was the only reason I preordered from there).

I'm mostly a PC gamer and I preorder games pretty often. Borderlands 2 and BioShock Infinite I did so to get the "ultimate" collectors edition versions. Other times, if I know I'll play the game right away, I'll just preorder it. The sometimes (not as much anymore), I'd preorder it since it was cheaper than getting it on release (preorder discount, coupon codes back when D2D did that, Steam trading). Now though, The Last of Us and BioShock Infinite are the only games I'll get any time soon, and I have them preordered (well, my sister preordered The Last of Us for me as a birthday present). I barely have any time to play games anymore, so I mostly quit buying them. I still have yet to try the last two Borderlands 2 DLC's.

Given the formulaic nature of what critics consider a good game I'll wait until actual customer reviews start coming in before making sweeping generalisations that gamers are 'gonna be pissed'.

I usually preorder when I'm certain that I'm going to like the game and want to play it as soon as possible. As long as there's an offer under 40? I just go for it. Didn't regret a preorder even once so far (and I've been preordering quite a lot for the past few years).

I never pre-ordered a game I didn't like. That said, I've rarely pre-ordered on Steam, GMG and other key sites offer great discounts on pre-order titles.

Well I never did pre-order anything because it just sounds plain retarded at the best of times, I'm not paying for shit I don't know.

That is why I so very rarely pre-order; really only follow ups to games I really really liked. Like Borderlands 2; I pretty much knew I was going to be playing that for a while. To tell you the truth, I usually rent or borrow a game before buying it.
Before that I think it was New Vegas which I do kind of feel like I got screwed on: first of all Best Buy didn't hold it for me but the real reason I felt screwed was because the game didn't work. It was a decent game content wise, it just constantly crashed on me.

As of now, I don't see any game in the future that I would pre-order. Maybe GTA V if there's some sort of premium you get for pre-ordering, and as long as it's not a choice of different gameplay content that's been auctioned off to different retailers like they did with LA Noir. If that's the case, I'll rent it and if i really like it, I'll wait & buy GOTY.
Pre-orders are a crapshoot, even if you only pre order those rare games that you really look forward to.

Never, I have this amazing ability to judge a game before it's out and know what it's worth. Actually I tend to underestimate the games, there have been more times I regret not pre-ordering it and getting the bonus rather than having a game I pre-ordered turn out to be a bad game.

good i never pre order games. never even buy day 1. as a pc gamer it would be stupid to do so. coz the whole point of pc gaming is wait a couple of months for steam sales and buy the games for a fraction of launch price. maybe the console gamers should consider switching to pc gaming as well.. though i love my playstation 2 as well

Only once have I felt really screwed over by a pre-order, and that was with BRINK. In fact me and a decent group of fellas pre-ordered that one and we were gonna have an awesome time playing together...at least until we found out it sucked. Besides that I have had a pretty solid time with any game I decided to pre-order.

I've only preordered 2 games in recent memory and one was Torchlight 2 and for 20 bucks and the inclusion of the first game i think i made out ok. The other was SR3 which was a ok if flawed game which still entertained me for more than a few hours.

Well, the store I preordered Driver: San Francisco at managed to loose all record of my preorder for the special edition. As a loyal regular customer there, naturally I was compensated for with a hearty shrug and a big bucket of fuck all. Ended up having to get a special edition copy shipped from the UK because the store didn't have any left. Of course, I can go to the store right now and pick up a supposedly limited edition copy for pocket change.

I got talked into preordering Final Fantasy XIII at the same shop. I cancelled it before it came out, when I realised I didn't actually want the game at all.

I also preordered PlayStation All Stars, which was a pretty big letdown. And, I didn't get the preorder exclusive DLC I was promised, that was nice.

I've only pre-ordered a few games, but here's a basic rundown;
-Mass Effect 3; Got screwed
-DN:F; Got screwed
-Skyrim; Arguably screwed. Spent a lot of time with it, but didn't enjoy it all that much
-BF3; Somewhat screwed. Enjoyed it for long enough after it came out, but stopped playing after a couple of months 'cause it was really meh
-Starcraft 2; Not screwed
-Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion; Not screwed
-Spore; Didn't follow the hype, so not all that screwed. Seemed lacking in some areas, but was still fun overall for me when I bought it.

So, what has this told me?
Stop pre-ordering games. Especially AAA titles. Also, view all trailers as cynically as possible, and all news, until the game is released. Odds are, that cynical view will be right these days =/

I really only tend to preorder a game if I am really excited for it, or if it has a great preorder bonus. I think that the best preorder I had was Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, because not only was I getting an amazing game, but I also got a copy of the original game on Xbox early and as soon as I placed the preorder.
