Tonight we got ourselves the first long look at what I can only guess is going to be the next great show. HBO has been filming the adaption of A Game of Thrones and tonight before the season finale of Boardwalk Empire we got a ten minute inside look

So... what do you think? If you're a fan, does this give you even more confidence that this show will do justice to the books? And if you're new to the series all together, does this make you want to watch the show just for the show?

Edit: if anyone is interested we have a user group devoted just to the show, http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Winter-is-Coming so if you ever feel the urge to discuss the show feel free to join and jump on in. We'd love to hear you guy's opinions as we get even more stuff as the show draws ever nearer.

Never even heard of this before. Books or otherwise. Personally I stay away from these types of shows. Not really my thing.
Maybe I'll read the books though?

I can tell you that without a doubt A Song of Ice and Fire (the book series the Game of Thrones is based on) is the best series I've ever read.

The video didn't excite you at all?

Love the Song of Ice and Fire... still miffed at the time taken since the latest one and the fact that I'm waiting for a story of the same space of time from different perspectives... but hey, Mr. Martin is a busy guy. I just hope he sticks around for us, unlike the author of my other favorite epic...

About the TV series, though... Peter Dinklage has way too normal of features to be Tyrion... but he's a damn good actor, so I can accept it. Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark makes me feel like a damn pedophile... I always thought of her very much as a little girl in the books...
I'll totally buy this on DVD if it lives up to that beind-the-scenes preview there.

I'm just pleased there's premium cable companies still making quality TV series.

Seems anything that relies on advertising only is stuck making crappy cheap reality shows.

Almost every TV show I've watched in the past year has been American or made by the BBC.

I'll give Channel 4 credit for its support of comedy however, tho I found Frankie Boyle's new show unsurprisingly disappointing.

I'm very excited about this, perhaps more so than I was when I saw the first LOTR Trailer. I'm curious about the level of sex and violence that will make it to the screen as the books deal with pretty much every despicable act you can think of. I am VERY glad this hasn't been forced through the machine of feature films.

On a related note... When's the next book George?!!? No more sci-fi!

He only has five partial chapters to go before A Dance with Dragon is done.

Totally agree, that was just shit. Fact is he's not a funny or contraversial as he likes to think he is.

Still at least there's Peepshow!

"All the characters are complex. Just when you have them pegged, they're something else."

What this says to me is "expect bullshit out-of-character plot twists to be passed off as 'hidden motives'"

Have you read the books it's based on?

No. Martin actually creates realistic characters with a full range of traits and motivations rather than simple stereotypes cookie cuttered in to play roles. There are very few simple characters just there to perform a function. What he means is that when you try and work out the plot and characters by using what you've read/seen before it fails mostly because Martin's characters aren't so one dimensional.

Fantastic, it's being made into a series.

My favourite fantasy series of all time will finally be accessible to those not quite as bookish as myself.

The vid itself is unlikely to excite those who haven't read the books, but trust me when I advise you...

Watch it.

mmmmm, can't wait :) except that it means i'll probably have to get HBO (which i'd otherwise have NO desire for), since i don't want to wait for it to come out on dvd :(

of course, i'd just be happy if GRRM finally finish A Dance with Dragons...

Worry not good ser as I said above, he has only five partial chapters to complete (so says his publishers) before ADwD is done. I would guess a late spring early summer release if everything goes well.

i dunno... from what i've read, he's had those last 5 partial chapters left for about the past year and a half... i'm not very optimistic at this point, although i can't give up hope entirely, or the despair might crush my soul :(

No, up until New York Comic Con all we knew was he was stuck with something he was calling The Meereenese knot which was giving him a lot of trouble however he has manged to solve this issue with the introduction of a new POV character. Apparently he has been on a role up until he went travailing.
