I got burned out on the books about halfway through the third one. I'm all for dark fantasy, but it's nice to have at least some hope in there occasionally. Nothing good ever happened to anyone in those books, and if it did you could guarantee they'd be raped, beaten up, imprisoned or have loved ones killed within a couple of chapters. It was just unrelentingly depressing. I'm more of a Malazan Book of the Fallen guy, myself.

That said, this does look surprisingly good. I might check it out at some point.

I definitely want to give it a look. Does anyone know what time it is supposed to be on?

Reluctant Snip
There is no smiley I can make that expresses the jaw dropping power I felt just now. HBO does it again, it seems. I am... stupid excited to watch this.

I've heard good things about the Malazan books, would you say that they are comparable to A Song of Ice and Fire?

In terms of scope and ambition, yeah. The first book, Gardens of the Moon, is incredibly difficult to get in to, it doesn't really spend time setting things up, just launches in to it. If you can stick with it though, they're fantastic books. Eriksson can have a tendency to ramble a little in the middle sections, and often makes completely average people spout deep, philosophical solliloquies. None of that matters though, because the climaxes of all the books are unrelentingly awesome. I don't usually like to use the word epic to describe things, but it really does fit with these books. It's definitely worth a try, but just be aware that it might not be for you.

Possible story spoilers! Read on at your own risk!

Huh. I question their classification of Danerys Targaryen as a villain. Sure, her ultimate goal is to conquer Westeros, but... she's one of the more upstanding characters overall; quite different from either her father or brother. She's sort of the Iron Woobie Mary Sue of the series, and my personal view on the story is that it will end with her (and Tyrion, and Jon Snow) versus the Others. (And, following that, the second reign of the Targaryen house)

Contrary to the hype, George R R Martin does include a variety of unambiguously good-hearted characters. Most obviously, Ned and Robb Stark are both trying to do the right thing; I'd also classify Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Brienne, Danerys, and a number of the minor lords from Stark's original domain as "good guys." There are also a number of unambiguously bad characters: Cersei, Tywin, Viserys, Joffrey, and pretty much everyone from the Iron Islands have essentially no redeeming qualities. Sure, we see things from their points of view at times - but there's no question that those points of view are evil from an objective standpoint. Then there are the complex characters: Jaime, Catelyn (if you include both living and zombie Catelyn as the same character), Sansa and Arya, Petyr Baelish, ...pretty much every other major character.

It's a complex series, but it's not all "shades of gray." At least, not until George finishes the next book, at which point who knows what'll have changed?

I have heard many times that Song of Ice and Fire is awesome series of books but more I hear about what it actually is, more boring it sounds.

i don't recall them actually saying Dany was a villain. the actress simply describes her as a "wicked person", which doesn't necessarily mean villain, even assuming she's using wicked the way it's defined, and not as slang. i agree with your classification of most characters, but even most of the "good" characters have some pretty extreme shades of grey. and in my opinion, the only true "evil" characters are not so much evil, as bat-shit insane (Cersei, Joffrey, Viserys). Tywin and most of the Iron-islanders i'd describe as ruthless and pragmatic, but not necessarily evil... Euron Crow-eye being a possible exception.

oh, heck no! unless you require non-stop fight scenes for a book to be interesting, they aren't boring at all. honestly, the only way i can see anyone not liking this series is if they can't handle the darkness, or they're offended by the sex, violence, and language. or they just don't like fantasy (and i hesitate to even classify it as fantasy, since there are almost no non-humans and almost no magic).

I AM SO EXCITED.
I only finished the series this summer, but I need to read them again.

When I first started A Game of Thrones, I didn't enjoy it as much as I expected. It felt like there were too many different plot lines going on and I just wanted to see some action. It took a while to get used to Martin's style, I guess. I remember thinking of it as a medieval fantasy soap opera -- then found out it was going to be an HBO series.
