So, why do we have prequels? They usually (if not always) don't add anything new to the story, and sometimes add continuity complications, and we already know how they're going to end. So why do we have prequels at all? Anyone?
$$$ The almighty dollar (or various other local currencies). If a movie/game/book is popular, particularly if a singular character is very popular among fans, people see a very easy way to print that fandom into money by making a prequel with that character heavily emphasised.
OT: They usually tell the story of something that you most probably didn't hear all that much in the original, and they go into details, you may know the most basic ending to it but these little stories are interesting( if the writer is good) and they explain history of the original.
Prequels can be good if they are made right, only bad prequels often add nothing to the whole series and just feel tacked on.
good prequels can shed light on a characters past that isn't fully elaborated in the first installment. They can shed light on important events that influence what happens in the original story and show different sides to the same conflict and what not. Just because you know how it will all end doesn't mean it can't be good, after all it's the presentation and the events leading up to that predefined end that matter.
Not all prequels are led by greed and it annoys me when that's all what anyone has to say. Some prequels can be good if they contribute something meaningful to the overall story. Learning a characters past in greater depth can easily make a good story alone.
I think prequels are a cool way of going in depth with characters or specific side plots ... take Crisis Core - really cool example of a prequel that really paid off to play as well, although we knew what was gonna happen at the end ...
