Prey: A Character Driven RP [FINISHED]

Maya tried to push Zetta away as she spoke to her, then buried her face into Takeda's shirt whilst sobbing ever harder. The little girl knew that her friend was dead, but she didn't want to believe it, so she kept a hold of him, hoping that it was all just a joke and in a moment he'd jump up with a grin on his face and say "fooled you". It seemed impossible, unthinkable even, that the boy who had been so lively just a minute ago was now gone.

Meanwhile Lily shook her head sadly, then straightened up. Sirens were quickly approaching; for a moment she considered ditching the others and just running for it, but then she decided it would be safer in a group. Besides, she was also curious to see what the sword was really capable of. While she didn't want to give orders, she thought that someone better organise her companions before the police did, so she beckoned for the other two adults to speak to them quietly.

"It'll be bad for all of us if Takeda's identity is discovered. Zetta, could you help Maya to safety? Gabriel, could you take care of... well..." she gave an uncomfortable look towards Maya cradled around the kitsune's body. "I'll carry Excalibur and watch your backs. Lets aim for those houses over there."

I'd rather not touch that crying child, or the dead boy she thought to herself.

Rin smiled at Dr. Strauss, although her eyes didn't change their expression.

"You did as much as you could, it's those demon-thieves who are truly responsible for his death, not you. Here, this should do the trick."

The woman passed a small container of clear liquid to the doctor, who left the room to attend Blackrose. She then turned to Alec.

"I know about your ability, that fact you can contact the dead, so to speak. Such powers are... very rare, to say the least, even by a special's standard."

She leant forwards to speak in a lower voice, so even if someone else had been the room only Alec would have been able to hear.

"The darkness on the other side, can you feel it too? Slowly feeding on us, our lives, our children. In these last few years its changed for the worse... and I know it wants the sword you desire. "

Gabriel continued to stare at the dead body until someone spoke his name. He broke his gaze away and looked up at the delegating woman. He had half a thought to object and demand the sword be carried by him, but decided now wasn't the time.

"What do you mean, 'take care of'?" He said, pushing himself upward and testing out his sore neck and legs. "Carry or...cremate?"

He glanced at Maya. Hopefully her English wasn't good enough for her to understand what he just suggested.

Alec felt something inside of him snap, the confusion he had was replaced with rage. The demon had started a rampage in Alec's mind, no negotiation his soul made with the endless void of darkness was listened to.

"Give up! You are too weak to fight me. Your words only prove that this man should be mine. I have worked long and hard to find him! You shall not get in my way!"

The figure flicked something at the glowing orb floating around helplessly, and then it began splitting into smaller multicolored orbs which were sinking into the ground.

"The big man will get you back one day, he sees all and never forgets...Traveler"

Alec snapped back into reality.

"I'm not anymore special than you. What's the point of talking to the dead if you can prevent them from dying...Mrs.Time Maiden?"

best situation ever, now if only I can get this hag to lead me to the sword...and children

Zetta nodded as Lily spoke, eyes trained in the direction the sirens were coming from. They'd be there in a few minutes, she guessed. Zetta glanced sharply at Gabriel as he spoke, a frown on her face. "I don't think the latter is really an option anyway, right? Not right now, at least." She paused, looking back over at Maya to see if she'd even heard the exchange, but the girl was still crying into Takeda's shirt and she couldn't discern any reaction.

With a soft sigh, she crouched back down besides Maya. "Maya, sweetie," she said softly, reaching out to put a hand on the girl's shoulder. "Look, I'm... We're all really sorry about Takeda, but we have to move. Gabriel can take care of him and I could, um, carry you if you like." She paused, unsure of how Maya would take that. It didn't matter, though; if the girl refused to move, Zetta would have to scoop her up into her arms anyway in order to get moving before the ambulances and cops arrived.

With that, Dr. Strauss set to work.

"Okay," he said to his new patient as reassuringly as he could manage through his trembling voice, "Lie on your stomach, and I will inject you with a local anesthetic that will numb your for a few hours while I work."

Dr. Strauss waited for his patient to lie on her stomach, then he injected her. While he waited for the anesthetic to kick in, he decided to practice his bedside manner.

"I'm sorry, I'm afraid we didn't get a chance for a proper introduction. I'm Dr. Strauss. What is your name?"

"Name's Blackrose. So, how long is this going to take? I'd like to learn a but more about Rin." Blackrose said, feeling nothing in her shoulder as Strauss began the operation. "So, what's on your mind?"

"Oh nothing... nothing," Dr. Strauss replied a little too quickly, "This shouldn't take too long... uh... the anesthetic should be working now... uh... tell me if this hurts."

Dr. Strauss pinched Blackrose's back hard.

Maya hadn't heard any of the exchange between the adults, when Zetta spoke directly to her she simply shook her tear-streaked head and kept her arms tightly around Takeda. Even the rapidly approaching sirens didn't make her move, she thought they wanted her to leave the kitsune behind and she couldn't do that.

Rin was taken aback by Alec's sudden outburst, she looked like she was about to say something harsh but then held her tongue in favour of a more measured reply.

"I... I can't always prevent people from... dying... as these circumstances make obvious. Even my sight sometimes... has limits. Say, how did you get here in the first place? Many have tried and failed to track me down before, and if it had not been for the incoming police you would have made it here within a few hours without my intervention. That's not usual, to say the least, who sent you here?"

The demon flew around Alec's mind until it found the information needed to answer.

"I have been sent by Tao Zheng Biological Research Corporation. I have gotten there by mistake after I lost my job for no reason. They told me where to find you. Look, it was Hui's wish to get the sword back. Mr.Kimura is gone now and also wanted me to retrieve the sword. Many people [small][small][small]and other things[/small][/small][/small] want that sword. Please tell me how to get to it!"

Alec began pacing back and forth anxious, and impatient, then a shuffling sound was heard, and a knife on a drawer next to him fell barely missing his head.

"Can't barely feel a thing. Now, I can feel that you and Rin are sad about something. Mostly Rin, though. Did something happen before we showed up?" Blackrose said to Strauss.

"I couldn't save her friend, Merlin," Dr. Strauss answered as he picked up a scalpel and a pair of pliers, "He was shot in the leg... but there was an unknown infection that killed him... I couldn't even slow it down. Hopefully, you don't have that infection. Hmm..."

Dr. Strauss carefully and slowly removed the bullet, using the scalpel as leverage. After twenty minutes the bullet was out and on a nearby tray.

"You're very lucky," he told Blackrose, "The bullet didn't even make it to the bone. You should be able to walk in a few days. In the meantime... hmm... we don't seem to have any wheelchairs here..."

Dr. Strauss examined the wound, looking for any sign of infection. When he found none, he got out a set of stitches and closed the wound.

"There, all done. I would advise against putting pressure on your back for the time being. Your stitches will need time to heal."

Dr. Strauss grabbed a nearby chair and sat down in front of Blackrose. He lowered his head so that they were face to face. After taking in her features for a moment, Dr. Strauss put his head in his gloved hands and massaged his temple with his thumbs.

Rin's interest perked up considerably as Alec began to drop names in his speech. She leant back and put her hands together in rapt attention.

"That Hui woman is still around? I'm surprised she wants the damm thing back, I gave her a whole house I no-longer needed for her and that noisy baby of hers to live in exchange for that one blade. So, is Tao Zheng corp. where the sword came from? I've always wondered how she got a hold of it. It was due to my powers and luck that I found her and was able to make a deal. What does this company do exactly?"

The demon got angry and more impatient.

"I don't know. Can we please get to the sword already!? I feel annoyed right now! I'll answer questions later!"

I can't wait any longer!

"I am willing to bribe you for directions to the sword. Here are my keys to the house, car, and all of my money! Take it and lead!"

Heh, sucker wont know what hit him when he wakes up

Gabriel recieved Zetta's glare with an apologetic shrug. When he saw her reasoning with the girl had failed, he crouched next to the girl. The sirens were getting awfully close. Really self concious of what he was doing, he leaned forward.

"Hon, you need to let him go. Else we'll all get into trouble." He said, fully realising that his words were as hollow as could be when spoken to someone like this.

"How about we take you - both of you - somewhere we won't get into trouble, and see what we can do for your friend, 'kay?"

More hollow promises.

"What's the matter, Strauss? You act like I'm giving you a headache." Blackrose said, reaching out, trying to get into his mind to see what he was thinking.

"And why would I be unable to walk? The bullet was in my shoulder, not my foot." She said, sliding to the edge of the bed.

Gabriel's words dimly making sense to her, Maya grudgingly let go of Takeda's body, and let herself fall dejectedly into Zetta's arms, never letting her gaze stray for a moment away from the fallen kitsune.

"He's going to be okay... he's just hurt... that's all..." she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

Meanwhile Lily flicked her head slightly, and spoke in a calm but firm voice.

"We better leave, before they see too much."

She pointed down the street to where small groups of people were slowly emerging from their hiding places behind stalls and shop windows to get a closer look at the carnage.

Rin raised an eyebrow as what appeared to be Alec tried to persuade her to take him to Excalibur.

"Why, this Tao Zheng place does inspire loyalty, does it not? How very interesting, I'll have to check out this company of yours sometime, could be... helpful to my goals. Anyhow, I don't need your money, with my powers I can get anything I want. However, I no longer want the sword myself, it's what I used to find Merlin and wake him from his over a thousand year sleep... too many bad memories to keep it now."

The woman stood up and put her long coat back on.

"I do have a deal, which will be mutually beneficial for me, you and your companions. I've got some preparations to make first however, I should only be gone a couple of minutes from your point of view at the most. See if Dr. Strauss has finished his surgery yet."

Rin clicked her fingers and disappeared leaving the American alone in the neatly-furnished room.

Dang, can't get two birds with one stone this time. Might as well check up on the near dead girl anyway, maybe I can tell the Reaper to come early.

Alec walked to Dr.Strauss.

"So doctor, almost done fixing up the girl or no?"

"The bullet went through your shoulder and just barely hit your spine," Dr. Strauss told Blackrose without looking up, "Without an thorough X-ray exam, I can't be certain if it will permanently impact your ability to walk, if at all. I simply feel it is best to err on the side of caution in this," And then, Dr. Strauss added pleadingly, "please, try not to put too much pressure on your spine for the time being. Aside from that... yes, Alec, I have done all I can for her."

Dr. Strauss lowered his hands from his face, but continued to stare at them; as if drawn to them from what he was hoping would be a distant memory by now.

Blackrose saw something was troubling Strauss on the inside, and decided to reach out to his mind to see what was wrong. But the reaction she got almost made her pull back immediately. She felt an intense grief, sadness, and sorrow, along with a scatter of thoughts, ranging from "Why did they have to go?" to "Why couldn't I have helped them?". At this, Blackrose yanked herself out of Strauss's mind, nearly gasping for air.

"Strauss, what happened to you to cause the grief you're feeling? And don't say it's Merlin, either. What the hell happened?" She said to him.

Dr. Strauss looked at Blackrose with a mix of anger and despair. He debated with himself as how he should react. He sighed and decided that it no longer mattered at this point.

"I... I..." he choked, it was difficult to tell someone about it even now; years later, "I..."

Dr. Strauss went silent, looked back down at his gloved hands; a few tears escaped his eyes as the memories came flooding back.
