Hey People,

If you know me you'll probably know that I am Bisexual. If you don't...well now you do. I've only just come out though and I'm starting to get more involved in LGBT things. Most recently I've been considering going to Brighton for Pride (Gay Pride festival and parade) in August. I was just wondering has anyone been to it? If yes, how is it? Has anyone gone to any other Gay Pride thing (be it a rally, parade, festival or even just a Gay Pride Party)? How did that go? This doesn't just apply to LGBT people because I know some straight people (mostly girls) who want to go to Pride just to see what it is like.

Thanks,

I live down in Brighton and I can't get away from the parade xD
That being said, i'm not gay/bi so I can't really shed the whole light on the day. Generally it's a rally with floats and loud music. As Koi points out, there is a lot of flaunting and dare i say; 'generalization'.

I'm sure the parade itself is for show but if you want to enjoy the whole day, you should plan ahead and look for the individual parties the communities have set up.

I'm sorta with Shiny Koy on this too. I'm gay but these sort of things really don't appeal to me at all. Far too loud and "in your face" for my tastes.

'A lot of the LGBT community want nothing more than to be viewed as normal persons simply going about with a different sexuality' pretty much sums me up but obviously that's not going to be the case for everyone.

I'd suggest you go once, see how it feels to you. If you like it you've got a new thing to look forward to each year, if you don't you've just learned alittle more about yourself.

I'm not gay but went to manchesters pride last year with my gay brother and gay sister (and my mother weirdly enough). As you can tell I have a rather open minded family :p.

It was hugely fun though, lots of fun and festivities and a lot of strange things :p. The parade is fun to watch and the events and bars afterwards (although very expensive) meant there was lots to do! Just go with people you know will enjoy it aswell and youll have a blast, fun for all the family in my case! (wouldent advise taking children though :p)

You know, I've never understood gay pride parades. They always seem to come across as less about being gay and proud and more about screaming LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME.

Brighton Pride has quite a good reputation for having a fun/festival/carnival atmosphere and while the actual parade floats might be a little wild, it won't be wall to wall butches or twinks in arseless chaps (honestly, I've never been to Brighton but have been to Manc, Birmingham etc and never seen that, it's a myth. Most gay folks look like most straight folks. Fact.).

But I get this feeling that this year it is a ticket event, could be wrong. But I think that there is a park/festival event of some sort.

If it is nearby, then go along and have a look. It will at least let you see what is going on.

Gay pride festivals are always fun to go to. Regardless of sexual orientation.
Thats what I've thought. Also, I've actually got a friend (straight) who wants to go as well. So I'm going to at least see what the fuss of it is like as well. Then if I don't like it...well I don't like it. But if I do...who knows: Frequent Flyer I could be.

Well, have fun! The last one I went to had a brilliant atmosphere, and was alot of fun just to hang out with my friends there.

Slightly miffed at the dig about straight males being less interested in GLBT issues, but those types of events are pretty awesome.
