I've always been okay with my school being allowed to take phones and such, seeing as it was against the rules. But today that has all changed.

I was sitting in a class, and we hear a phone go off. No one confesses to it, so the principal decides to take EVERYONE'S phone in the class. Not only did they take our phone, but they go through your messages, your Facebook and anything else they feel like doing. It just doesn't seem right, and there has to be SOME other way to avoid what they do now.

So I ask you Escapist, how do you feel about school privacy?

EDIT: They can get pass our passwords which is what brought this whole incident up.

Going through your messages is just wrong. If there are not a law against it then I am seriously disappointed in the justice system.

furthermore, punishing an entire group for the action of one individual is just plain idiotic as well. Credit should be given where due.

It seems to me that you should leave your phones in your locker/car while you're at school. You don't need them there. And if you do that, you won't subject yourself to such things.

I feel you are pretty stupid to not have a password on your phone.

I also feel its pretty stupid to bring your phone to school if its not allowed.
I should have added that they get past the password on your phone.

Also, phones are allowed, just not allowed out. Kinda silly, but everyone still brings their phone.

I think it's another spot where everyone's fear has caused an erosion of their right to privacy.

I would have raised hell. I would have told them to fuck off, and that if they had no proof it was my phone that went off they can sit back down and drop the matter.
One guy in my class, chose to have the guts to do this. He said, "I don't have my phone so it wasn't me." And the assistant-principal made him empty all his pockets, and picked up his back-pack searched through it, and took his IPod.

That's my question. Might as well give 'em your facebook and email passwords while your at it.

No idea, and that's what bugs me the most. I have no idea how, but they can. Because they'll tell you exactly when you sent/recieved a message. With a password, or without a password.

What the fuck?? By the way, how do you know they read the messages and emails on the phones? If you can prove that they did this it's seriously incriminating. They are absolutely not allowed to abuse their authority like that. They're also not allowed to search through a student's bag as you're claiming here. Also, how long did it take for them to give back the phones?

Take this to the principal. If (s)he does nothing take it to a newspaper or something. If all that you're saying is true, what they did was a properly unacceptable breach of privacy.

Nobody even had cell phones when I was in school. I had one for emergencies by the time I was a junior in high school. My thoughts are, if we could get through the day without using a cell phone in school, so can you kids. If you don't want it confiscated or searched when there is a disciplinary incident, don't bring it in or leave it in your locker/car/whatever.

You should probably just keep your phone in your locker, you shouldn't need it in class.

Wow, they sound like an ass. They have no right whatsoever to go through your personal belongings and phone over such a small thing. Making the class stay in sounds more reasonable than executing Order 66. Go tell your parents, what they're doing isn't acceptable.

... Actually thinking about it this was similar to what happened for a short time in my school, though they only went through the log to find who the call guilty one was, though that also meant that they would "stumble" upon embarrassing secrets every once in a while.

What we did was that a few of us super-nerds got together, went through the rules of the school and found that they had no right to do it by said rules (going through the content of the phone that is). With this we informed some of the more outraged ones (the gals) who complained to their parent who in turn threatened to take their kids out of the school if it continued.

Principal bends over, students win.

Though it must be stressed that it was a private school which was not that large, so it could rarely afford to lose student. After that I have made it a rule to know the rules wherever I go, so that I can spit authority in the face when it oversteps (cause it feels frecking amazing to do it).

I never really understood the whole "for emergency" excuse. I mean if there was an incident with a family member being hospitalized or the like, they would call the school.

As for the OP this is unacceptable you should really tell an outside authority about this.

On one hand, there is absolutely no reason why you need your phone in class. There is no benefit to having them in the classroom, and they only serve to distract and annoy the people around the student using the phone (or everyone, if it goes off).

On the other hand, the school has no rights to go through personal information like that. It is a definite violation of privacy, and it needs to be stopped.

Wow. That's pretty strict.
I'd be surprised if it wasn't illegal to go through your private material though.

I'm glad my school isn't that strict. The standard response to a ringing phone around here is to laugh at the person for forgetting to set it to vibrate.
