That sucks. DRM is a shitty way to "enforce anti-piracy" and as such needs to be burned out of the history books and have all other records sent to the desert to hang out with E.T.

But then again, I don't pirate games, so this doesn't really effect me. Good luck, PC people.

Oh Noes! Now you'll have to pay for this crap instead of stealing!
Oh Noes! Now your tax money will go toward prosecuting those people! A new federal body, special new training for state and local police, special copyright attaches to go around embassies...

And it's probably gonna be used to develop new ways to hamstring communications in order to make sure that Big Content doesn't actually have to ever improve its business model to keep up with technology, too!

I think before everyone goes off on an 'ZOMG I HATE BUSH' rant, you should know that this first was passed in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.

Not to say that Bush and the Republicans in the House are any less guilty, but at least know that this wasn't just Bush.

If so much money is at stake, why is it so difficult for them to hire a couple of kids to run searches and compile lists of people to prosecute?
They basically do that already. They just suck at it.

Big Content hires companies like MediaSentry, which are little better than script kiddies. They're also not licensed private investigators, which has caused some legal problems when cases actually do to court.

And if you want something really kickass, you can have a pouch of gasoline go off in a fiery hollywood style explosion. I wanna see what that looks like in a case with a bunch of fans, would it make a fireball for a second?

OH NOEZ!! THEYS IS GONNA TAKE MY COMPY!!

*ahem*

Sorry about that, but I've pirated a thing or two, or three, or seventy... Anyway, I don't want them to take away my Pc, Laptop, External Harddrive, PSP and so forth. I like those things. I paid for those. I mean what's 600+ dollars worth of PSP games between friends.

Truthfully I haven't actually pirated a game that I ever kept. So far all the games I've gotten for PSP have been total crap.

Passed 410-11, to be specific. Kucinich and Paul are the only two semi-famous representatives who opposed it.

Well, sucks for the US but has no bearing on my Canadian ass. Contrary to George Dubya's beliefs, US laws don't apply to other nations.
That's just because the election happened to be timed in a manner that killed a Conservative bill that was pretty much the same as the American DMCA. Among other totally nifty things, that bill would have made circumventing DRM illegal, and probably would have made posting a "mashup" video on YouTube carry a fine of thousands of dollars - I don't recall off the top of my head, but I want to say it was either $10K or $20K.

I recommend you take a peek at http://www.michaelgeist.ca/, and I would also recommend that you vote strategically tomorrow so that the Conservatives don't end up with a majority that would allow them to pass this sort of crap unimpeded.

Part of the bill asks for special copyright ambassadors to lobby other countries to follow suit. Given how Canada already came pretty close to getting a ridiculous **AA-authored copyright law, I think you should be at least a little bit wary.
The only party in Canada that gives two shits about American demands are the Conservatives, who are on the way out. The election is today, and the way Stephen Hitler fucked things up here, we don't expect to see him re-elected now or ever. All the other Canadian parties rather detest the US right now, and would deny their plea just for the hell of it. Well, all except the Bloc, they'd deny it because America wouldn't have asked in French. Not like the Bloc will ever become the leading party, as they represent the interests of only one province, and detest all the others.
You haven't been following the election very closely, have you? The Conservatives are pretty much guaranteed a minority government and a majority is a very real prospect.

I will just beat the police to death with my hard drive and than laugh at the small amount of irony. Than get charged of manslaughter and so The Killer Hard Drive beings its rampage.

Wow. And here I thought in 2000 George Bush was telling the truth when he said he was conservative.

Isn't it great we can find the money to fund a whole new organization dedicated to cracking down on 12 year olds on Limewire, but we cant find any money for our shitty healthcare system?

This is why Democrats and Republicans suck.
The jackasses fund all these things that help noone, and the circus elephants wont fund things that might help out someone.

Sounds like punishing thieves for thievery to me. What's the issue?
There's punishment and then there's just being a dick, this is the latter. This is basically saying "now you HAVE to accept our invasive DRM or lose everything!" not specifically in those words but...that could be one of the issues.

plus it's rich people taking everyhing from the not-so-rich. I will feel wonderful in knowing that because of cracking down on piracy, Lars Ulrich could finally buy his 10th Platinum-coated HumVee.
Actually it's rich people taking from not-so-rich thieves. Bit of a difference there. If you have more much money than I, do I then have the right to take your stuff, as long as you still have lots of other stuff? This is saying you have to accept our invasive DRM OR not enjoy our work product. You still have choices - deal with the DRM, steal the work product and hope you don't get caught, or do without it. I wanted Bioshock; I did not get Bioshock because of the invasive DRM. That does NOT give me the right to steal it.

To those defending stealing as long as you have no intention of selling the stolen property, would it be okay if I steal your car and take it for a joy ride as long as I bring it back? What about if I steal your MP3 player and later bring it back? Can I come into your home and use it while you are out? You still have your car, your MP3 player, your home, so that should be okay, right?
Provided you don't impede on my using or selling of my equipment/possesions your free to do whatever you damnwell please with them, and I have no issue with it.
Prehaps 'piracy' would is better described as plagiarism. Your stealing ideas and concept, not physical possessions, and as I said as long as you don't impede my ability to sell or make use of my work, your free to do what you want with it (this obviously means not distributing or marketing my work as your own).
It is silly to consider plagiarism as theft. It is different and has its own name.
