I have to question the thought behind this thread, "it has been done a million times, so lets do it again". Especially since the exact same thing was a subject to a thread yesterday.

On topic.

I haven't had a drink in over 3 years. I am not opposed to drinking, I am opposed to the amount the western world drinks.

It seems alcohol is like air, have it with everything. Long day? Booze, your having a meal? Booze, your celebrating or mourning? Booze, your bored? Booze, you want something to drink While watching TV/film? Booze. It's Friday/Saturday and your going out? Booze.

In all the above examples you never have the "RDA" of alcohol, do you? You always have 5 or 6 pints which is technically binge drinking, even though you feel no effect. Which is a shocking fact in it'self.

I will drink to celebrate or whatever but doing it just 'cos it's there is stupid, to me anyway. Like why do you have to go to a pub and buy booze to have a good conversation? Can't you go "Friends" style and go to a coffee shop, spend half as much and still have a good chat?

To those saying "I like it for the taste", it reminds me of a joke. "I like the taste of tea, that doesn't mean I drink 10 pints a night!", which if you apply it to tea makes it seem insane. If somebody said to that to you, you would burst out laughing but if somebody says that about booze it sounds like there bragging, to which you come back with your "HA! I drank 10 pints of ... then I had 5 shots of ... follwed by 3 crazy cocktails I would never order sobre".
If tea was as good cold as it is warm people would definitely drink it ALWAYS.
Like they do with ice-tea. (I don't like ice-tea though, lot of people do)
Lipton ice tea tastes like water, even the flavoured ones seem more watery then actual flavour.

Tried them?
I have and I hate the stuff.
Lots of people love of it to death though.

Why? Idonteven....

Occasionally, sure. I like to have a beer or two with friends, but that also usually spans along at least 2 hours of chatting. Within family, we usually have a glass of wine with lunch and every now and then, I do get together with friends to drink some more, though rarely to the point of sickness. I think that's very reasonable.

Personally, I don't see the appeal of alcohol. It has an off-putting taste and it can cause you to lose control of yourself. Not being in control of my own actions is a scary thought, so I'll stay away from the stuff.

I really don't care if other people drink, as long as they respect my decision not to.

The age limit is fine, plus if you join the army or any army faction here in the U.S.A. all age restrictions are gone! You can rent a car, drink, and purchase fire arms at 18 if you're in/were part of the army!

I've often wondered why one chooses to smoke or drink personally. I made the choice not to early on because I've never felt the need to slowly poison myself to death(I know it seems harsh to put it that way but that's how I've always viewed it). Alcohol only causes health problems so why do it?
Really, this might be a slight overreaction. If you only have a drink every now and then, you'd have to be extremely unlucky to experience any major health problems. Even getting drunk once or twice shouldn't do that much harm.

I used to drink purely for it's uninhibitive properties. it would allow me to feel for 2 hours at the cost of 12 hours of physical discomfort. eventually the novelty wore off and i decided that the benefit wasn't worth the cost, and stopped drinking.
my thoughts on alcohol is that it is just too unrefined to utilize at the moment. either that or i'm simply unaware of any refined alcohol that has uninhibitive benefits without or with reduced hangover symptoms.

I don't drink alcoholic drinks for the same reason I don't drink soda/coke, I don't know of any real benefits and I enjoy orange juice and water too much. I hear the number one reason is to socialize, so it's really like smoke was/is then, although not really that dangerous.

Eh, I did for a while because I had some sort of depression - figured it would be a fun way out of it for a while, and it was. Also apparently people like me over drink to death fairly often (something about INTJ or some other bull psychiatrists peddle).

I do not see the appeal of alcohol at all. I don't like the taste and I don't like the effect it has on people. I want to be in total control of myself and my bodily functions for as much of my time as possible and alcohol is not conducive to this. It turns vaguely likeable individuals into gibbering morons who's sole purpose seems to be centred around being as obnoxious as possible, and yet despite the regrets the following morning, I see them go out and do this again and again. This behaviour is completely unfathomable to me, maybe if it appeared to be at least slightly pleasurable or rewarding, but this does not seem to be the case from my perspective.

I love drinking, it's just an aid to enjoyment, whatever crazy thing me and my friends are doing, is ever so slightly more fun if we're rather drunk.

I don't drink as much right now, but a few months ago I'd buy a bottle of Whisky every Saturday and it'd last me until Sunday morning, I had some great times...

Also I have blacked out twice in my life, once from mixing Morgans Spiced Rum and Strongbow, (then drinking about a litre) that was a very good night, and another time from staying awake for 48 hours while drinking/doing certain other substances and that time I only blacked out for about 10 minutes.

Occasionally, it's fun to get so over the top that you barely remember anything.

Occasionally, not all the time.

That seems to be a broad, sweeping generalization of binge drinking. What if they are at the pub with mates, getting tipsy on a few pints? It loosens them up and gives them that funny buzzing feeling. But they're not out of control. Meh, your choice, but it seems a bit generalized.

I enjoy getting drunk but I've never passed out. I don't see why that would be enjoyable? I like to remember, because then me and my friends can laugh about it later and actually remember. Although, in honesty, I do want at least one night of blackout and black memory in my life if only for the weird feeling of blank memory. But I don't see the appeal and I like, even when I'm fairly wasted, still having some control over what I say and do even if standing up is difficult.
Seriously, a few weeks ago was my 16th and I was pretty drunk, every time I stood up I fell over, I couldn't stop laughing. Anyway, what are these other intoxicants? I once smoked week + bottle-bonged Salvia while drinking, I totally zoned out completely. And the Salvia made me feel a bit like a robot or that girl from The Windup Girl.

I live in the united states and am under the age of 21 so I believe that it would be wrong of me to drink alcohol and I would never do such a thing. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlatantLies]

I think it is relatively ignorant to say alcohol tastes bad. There are thousands of brand name beverages containing different percentages of alcohol and the alcohol content in some beverages doesn't change or hinder their taste.

I would not be at all opposed to people doing that (not that I really care what people want to do with themselves, whether I understand their choices or not), it just seems that most of the people my age that I have encountered either do not have or consciously disregard any sense of moderation when they decide to drink (yes, this is an unfair generalisation, but I suppose they are louder than the rest of the demographic and hence I don't notice them as much). I wouldn't call it binge drinking (that would be, in my opinion, where the whole purpose of the night is to drink, which I don't think is the case), but more often than not these people seem to be beyond tipsy before they even go out for the night. I have nothing against such behaviour, I just don't understand it and would definitely rather not emulate it.

But again, I prefer to avoid alcohol because I don't like the taste and personally, any level of drunkenness is more than I would want. To be honest, my mental state is delicate enough without throwing a depressant into the mix.

Eh, I've tried beverages with even the smallest levels of alcohol and other, relatively strong flavours involved, but I have found the alcohol to be the dominant flavour. I've been able to taste alcohol just using the same glass that an alcoholic drink had been in after having washed the glass once and filled it with my own, non-alcoholic drink. I don't know why, but alcohol to me is a strong unpleasant flavour that both dominates and ruins any beverage it is found in.

I love my drink. Probably a bit of a beer snob. I enjoy some spirits as well, but that's more for special occasions.

Beer:

I tend to enjoy more hoppy varieties. IPA's and the like. Stone makes a very good one. I've actually been enjoying Sam Adams' Latitude 48 IPA, as well. They just put out a nice sampler for it. Get this, the Latitude 48 is made with five different kind of hops. So for this twelve-pack they have 2 of those, and then the other brews all used only one of those five hops. So you get two of the East Kent Goldings, two of the Semcoe, two of the Zeus, and I forget the other two. I thought that was a nice idea.

Some wheat beers beers I like, but that's something I have to be in the mood for. With some exceptions. For example, Unibroue's La Fin Du Monde is phenomenal.

Spirits:

I tend to go for bourbon. Sometimes a nice scotch.

Cachaça is good stuff. Sort of a rum made from sugar cane instead of molasses. It's used to make the national drink of Brazil. The Caipirinha.
You basically put some sugar at a bottom of a glass, muddle some cut up limes into the sugar, and fill the rest of the glass with cachaça. It is absurd how good that is.

It's interesting to see what people say about you really, the first time I blacked out it was for about an hour, people who I didn't remember meeting were saying how funny I was and a few friends who I didn't remember being there said how out of I seemed to be.

But I like to retain control as well, blacking out isn't something I aim for, it's something I accidentally stumble across.

The second time I blacked out it was because I spent all Saturday drinking whisky, then on the night I went to a party and smoked a lot of weed, then the next day I went out drinking again without sleeping. I felt amazing on Monday...

One of the other times I've felt incredible while mixing substances was I had a litre of Bells whisky to myself, followed by a friends weed, my weed and another friends weed.

Damn that was a good day...
