I know that this season, I've been more of a "Bah-Humbug" person, but if someone could help me figure this out, it would be a great Christmas gift. (Especially since I could get Steam back and reinstall my games.)

Recently, I got a virus that wiped out the registry and prevented regedit from doing anything. Being the impatient type, I just said "Fuck it", wiped the hard-drive clean and re-installed Windows XP. Well, for some reason, I am now incapable of accessing the internet on that computer. I have tried for countless hours to get some kind of connection, but nothing works. My modem shows the computer is connected and the modem is connected to the world wide web. (If it wasn't, you wouldn't be reading this thread.)

I've tried everything, but it refuses to acknowledge that there's a DSL cable stuck in it. I've tried to set up a broadband network, but it doesn't show anything being there. It also tells me there are some features that aren't installed to make certain things work, but it doesn't tell me what features and opening up the hardware devices window and trying to install something results in a "there is no software" error, even though the XP disc is in there.

I'm losing my fucking mind over this. Can somebody please help me?

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

have no idea how it works on windows (curently working on linux) , but does your computer connect to the right default gateway and the correct DNS? Find a way to "ping" your DNS and gateway on windows and post results , may be able to help you. ( My university uses Linux on this kinda thing , trying my best to adapt :) )

Argh! I was just about to post and say that I knew what the problem was and that the mods could close the thread. <:-(

Because I wasn't around when my computer was built, I wasn't aware that you had to install a network adapter which mine is now missing! So, I just need to have it reinstalled again when the guy who built mine has a chance.

I do want to thank you, though, for trying to help me. :) Thanks and merry Christmas!

Mods, you may close the thread.

Ok , try this http://50.18.253.122/ (it's 9gag.com address- meme website).
Now try this , 9gag.com.

If first works and second doesn't , your DNS is fucked and you need to change it to what it is on the computer your internet "works".
If both don't work , you need to check your default gateway(or atleast I think) .
This is pretty experimental as the right way to do it would be to ping them or use traceroute , but this is simpler.
Edit: just saw you fixed it :) . Happy Christmas to you too! ( There goes my change to use what I learned :)) )
