I have noticed these issues way too much. On a whim decided to try and load YouTube on Internet Explorer 8 and it ran so much smoother than any other browser. Maybe Microsoft has it's uses after all. By the way new poster here.

Sounds suspicious, oh and if you really must use IE (although you shouldn't), for the love of Gods, update to version 10, it'll close some of the massive security holes it has.

In all fairness I am not sure which version of IE I am running. Either way Chrome still is a better system overall and I use it for everything.

So I ask you guys: the fuck is going on?
Youtube doesn't know how to code.

They routinely try and make updates and changes that nobody (or not enough of everybody) wants and the things they TRY to do often don't work properly. They ignore all complaints and can never EVER find what's wrong with their system when videos:

Do not load
Do not load while paused
Load without sound
Reset without warning
Load without sound and reset without warning and load without sound again
Freeze
STOP loading
Stop loading AND freeze
Are unresponsive to attempts to control it
Will not reload when you hit REFRESH
Suddenly LOSE all that it has loaded for no apparent reason
ETC.

They have no idea what they are doing down there.
It sometimes seems like they're sitting there going "we've got a good system here. How can we screw it up?"

Yep OP, been having the same issues. Videos that have played for a couple of years with never an issue are suddenly cranky if they will play at all. And this happens on multiple machines so isn't a localized issue. My guess is it is either an issue with the newest version of Adobe Flash Player or YouTube themselves have broken something. Either way my solution has been to find as many of the videos I like to watch on an alternative service such as Vimeo.

So it isn't just me. Whenever I try to play a video over the last week or so, I've got to refresh the page before it'll start playing. I thought it was something in my Firefox config, though.

Anyone else get an issue where the ad crashes 1 second from the end and subsequently you can't watch the video?

Then you hit refresh and get another ad...

And then sometimes that ad crashes 1 second from the end too.

I lose my shit.

I've been having problems too, most notably recently I've had videos not load at all for about 20 seconds unless refreshed, in which case they work relatively fine.

I must really underestimate the difficulty of having a site that begins loading a video when it is played, and continues loading it while paused, and doesn't have to load it again when replayed.

I guess I'm super lucky because I haven't encountered any of these problems everyone seems to have. Once in a while a video might do something odd or not finish loading, but that's usually because my internet is acting up. I will say that the Youtube "updates" are usually pretty lousy in general.

Updating my graphics driver seems to have helped somewhat, at least they don't instantly crash to an error anymore.

oh. so it's not just me, or the specific videos i'm watching. good to know it's a site wide epidemic and the videos aren't actually broken. guess i'll just have to try watching them later.

Hey, you have it easy.

For me Youtube usually just flat out ends the video every 2 minutes or so. Meaning every 2 minutes I have to refresh the page and bring it back to where I was just to watch said video for another 2 minutes

What I hate is that the thing seems to think that my home connection is slow and insists on playing on the lowest resolution possible.

I don't usually have problems with youtube unless my internet is being screwy, but I do notice that videos never seem to buffer beforehand.

For instance, if I pause a video to go get some food, when I come back the buffer bar will have barely moved. But once I hit play, then it starts buffering a bit more. It's annoying because I end up glancing back at the buffer bar half the time instead of just watching the video.
