I don't get the whole deal with professional gameing. People who are good at videogames play for practically a living. Do people actually enjoy watching people compete in shooters?

As a gamer of 10+ years, I have to say yes. the sheer competitiveness of the competition is intense.

No. People who are great at videogames do play for a living.

And the answer is evident, the competitions draw crowds.

Its an advertising ploy pretty much. Away to show off the new madden or DOA. Have a competition and then it kind of expands from there. Or at least thats how i think it went commerical.

I heard a statistic that viewership on videogame competitions have been steadily increasing.

I really enjoy watching my friends play video games. I can't play FPS, but I like seeing other people play them, especially when they are good. I can definitely see the appeal.

Also, people will bet on anything. Gaming is no different.

Don't get mad, but I had to laugh at the redundancy.

I know there are professional gamers out there, that's why we even having tournaments for that kind of thing. As good as I might think I am, I don't think I'm cut out to be one of their ilk, though.

I hate watching people play games, just like I hate watching people play sports. I'd rather do it myself...

The game companies use those competitions as a loss leader to promote their games. If the "sport" (and as a sports fan I hate when poker/gaming/other non-sports co-opt that term) had to stand on its own (outside of South Korea, at least) it couldn't keep itself going. There wouldn't be enough prize money for even the best players to make it worth their while.

I still think it's a bit retarded how people may play for a living, I can see playing in a tournament as a side thing, but actually earning good money from it and being able to make a living off of it? That's going a bit far for my liking. Still... who doesn't like a good korean starcraft tournament?

I don't, and I don't see how anyone likes it. Especially when you could be playing the damn game yourself at that moment.

I don't think anyone should be paid for being a professional [Retarded ability, sport, or game with no practical use]er.

I like watching people play games. Though usually singleplayer games. Skill based runs, speedruns and some lets plays too.

Im actually behind the concept of playing games professionally but Ive seen too many people who are "pro wannabees" and they make me sick. Ive been trying to come to terms with this desire, but these guys take games WAY to seriously. The ones Im talking about specifically is Guilty Gear players. Im serious about this; a guy who goes to a local college's gamers club has not spoken to me since he fought me in GG and he beat me...bad. Its like, Im not good enough, no need to acknowledge the human being. But I digress...

These people have taken these games to a mathematical formula. They go to gameFAQs to learn the counter characters to all the characters and memorize the I-frames and their 20 hit combos and glitches to exploit. Infinite combos? Fair game!

I play MVC2 fairly well. I know I'm not pro-grade at it but you know what? There are only three moves i've EVER looked up on the internet for that game. Akuma's Raging Demon, Hayato's raging demon-esque, and Dan's raging demon-esque button combos. Everything else I know and learned from that game I learned by...you know...PLAYING. I also have a self-imposed rule that I dont like to repeat moves more than three times withing a span of time. I've relaxed on this recently because I realize if you can't block or move out of the way of 5 hadokens, well you need to learn to. But I've had a dude grab me out of moves in guilty gear over and over and over and over again. And I wasn't using the same move!

Its just a sore spot for me right now. I feel the concept is wrong on an almost moral level but I can't formulate my argument properly.

And watching someone else play football sucks. And watching someone else play soccer sucks. And watching someone else play poker sucks. And watching someone bass fish sucks.

And yet, a million people watch them.

Video Games have as much potential to become a professional sport, and I encourage it. If someone can make a living off of something they love, more power to them. I'm tired of hearing the excuse of how "video games don't require as much skill as [insert sport here]" or how "it's sucks watching other people have fun" when that's the argument against every sport.

I hate baseball, but that doesn't make it any less of a sport. I'm completely baffled at how anyone would want to watch a bunch of guys in skinny tights run around with a ball, but football is still a sport.

Hell, chess, bass fishing, poker, curling, and croquet are all considered sports! For god's sake, if bass fishing is considered a sport, then I see no reason why playing video games for a living shouldn't be one to.

It'll probably never happen, or if it does become more official then it'd be like every other god damn sport out there.

Who would hounestly ever want to do that for a career its like wanting to do games testing, might sound fun at first but it gets real boring real fast. Games testing is significantly more dull but playing the same game constantly infront of leering/shouting x-box live ninies? pass.

Games are my unwinding thing whenever im unemployed if all i can kill 6+ hours of a day wiht are games i go nuts, I dont get how peoeple could live without real work structure it gets so dull so fast.
