Tool, I'd say.

Oh, and The Chosen Pessimist from A Sense of Purpose, by In Flames. Yes, just the one song.

Also, Coheed and Cambria.

Still, that's more prog metal than prog rock, but they're still more than worth a listen.

well there's yes, if you like that sort of thing they're essential.
quicksilver messenger service (especially the album happy trails) are pretty proggy
jethro tull, of course. the nice, rush and camel. also the moody blues.
i don't like prog rock, generally, so am unaware of how well known these bands are

I'm a bit surprised no one's mentioned Muse yet. Oh yes, their music is so delicious.
Anyone got their new stuff? i hear it`s inspired by bands like RATM and stuff which is an odd decision to make ,but should be interesting

They've always been inspired by RATM and other stuff. Their new album features more unorthodox techniques for rock music, like relying more on an orchestra and even more bizarre effects, from what I've heard.

Rush is a must for any late 70's/early 80's music collection.

Personally, I was a fan of the music of the 60's and then the 80's forward. The 70's was both a decade of some of the greatest rock music of all time and some of the worst trends music has actually seen. Talking to people around in the 70's it seems no one really liked Disco, and yet it was popular enough that I know someone has to be lying.

Pain of Salvation
Spock's Beard
Those two are really good, but PoS is probably more prog metal sometimes.

Dream Theatre, they're not from around the 70s but they're my favourite prog rock band.
Oh yes. Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment are the masters of contemporary prog metal. Mike Portnoy is one of my drumming heroes.

Thank God, I was getting concerned nobody mentioned Rush yet. No prog rock collection can be even considered a collection without them.

Also early Coheed and Cambria can sort of be considered prog/hard rock I think, so them too.

Mastodon too. Their first concept album Leviathan is one of the best prog metal albums ever.

Don't think anybody has mentioned Focus yet. They're so damn awesome in every way. Listen to the song Hocus Pocus. It's ace.
