That is because they are the same things. This film is based on the ship and the fossilized alien inside which made a brief appearance in the original film.

If you've read any of the "Alien" series of books, the large skeleton alien found in the wreck is from another species with an elephant-like head. There is a part in the book series where Earth is being overrun by aliens and some people on a escaping ship have some contact with them.

Ridley is back, and so is Giger. With some skill and luck, this will wash away the taste of shit that "Resurrection" left all those years ago.

[and then they said that it's not an Alien film, it's a spin-off, or a sort of prequel, or something.
I'm not sure how to approach this information. Spin-off would be for example "Colonial Marines" tv show about soldiers fighting on some distant world (sans Aliens), or "Corporate wars" depicting agents of "Grant" stealing secrets from "Weyland-Yutani"...

"Prometheus" - despite even Scott's statements - is a prequel to Alien, nothing else. It takes place in the Alien setting, it uses more than a few things from its lore, it precedes original "Alien" dilogy. Et voila. Prequel.

*Edit: That looks suspiciously like a remake of the first one in which case I will be thoroughly pissed
Yeah, watching it again and reading the comments here, I'm starting to get the dreadful feeling that's what it will be - a remake, or 're-imagining' as they'd probably call it.
...backward writing. One of things i really despise in work of fiction. Estabilished facts are now changed, black is white, white is black. Bluerghhh. I'm really worried that it can disrupt, ahem, canon. I'm sure i saw some info that Scott plans to glue together Jockey race and origin of our species. Nothing good can come out of it, i tell you...

On the other hand, it will be wonderful movie by itself. I'm sure of it !

I am pretty sure I read an article in Empire some time ago that this is not a true 'Alien' film, but that it kind of developed from a prequel that they were writing.

Wow, it's like a copy and paste of Alien, although I must say I preferred the aesthetics of the original Alien trailer.

(Here it is for anyone who is interested)
I prefer the way the original loses the lettering for most of the action shots, I think it gets in the way of the Prometheus trailer's scenes

I can't really describe how I feel about the idea of Scott making a film so blinking similar to Alien if it's not meant to be in the same universe. That would be like Lucas creating a new "Planet Wars" franchise. What's the point of making a new movie that is basically one you made before with a few changes, and to do it so blatantly with the trailer, same font and title style, same music, multiple similarities and nods in the scenes chosen (32 seconds in, guy grabbing helmet and screaming, looks like a facehugger on him.)

The only way they could have ripped it off more was to use the "in space no one can hear you scream" tagline.

(Of course, all I said goes out the window if this new movie is actually meant to be in the same universe as Alien, It's just that no one seems to know if it is or not yet.)
It obviously is in the Alien universe, it's just not the Ripley storyline. You got Space Jockeys and a guy wearing a Weyland Yutani t-shirt, plus a lot of the tech has the same style. So yes, it is in the same universe, but might focus on the space jockeys instead of the aliens this time. So in a way it's not an Alien movie, but at the same time it is.

It looks like it takes place between 'alien' and 'aliens' where they set up the colony that Ripley gets sent to in the second movie.

If they change the alien designs like they did the predator in 'Predators' I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

I will give it the benefit of the doubt, though; I've enjoyed all the alien movies to a greater or lesser extent (even the AvP movies, though definitely lesser) and it's been a while since I've seen any really good hard scifi movies cruise through the box office that weren't based on comic books or made by pixar.

Too bad they didn't get john carpenter to direct it.

EDIT: just realized half of the discussion is about whether or not it's an alien film. If that isn't an alien movie I'll eat my shoe.

Ever since it was announced that there would be an Alien prequel, I have been waiting for some actual material about the movie, and now I got it.

And I can't say I am disappointed.

Yup, I think you are right and one of those aliens will make an appearance in this movie. It's canon right?

Well, it's been known for ages that this film will have no direct connection to the original Alien films. Same fundamental universe, but not the same events.

In short, it is neither a remake nor even a traditional prequel.

As for the trailer, I'm excited. It looks disressingly spectacular and clean, but I trust Scott to make a decent film.
- Perhaps it'll finally cleanse that series of the near irrevocable damage James Cameron wrought upon it with his awful Aliens.

Any depictions of the "space jockeys" with elephant like trunks is considered not to be canon. The space jockeys are part of the Alien lore but they have not been given a center stage. The Alien move was really just a horror thriller but there was just enough story in the 1st movie to captivate some fans, myself included. I've always wanted to know more about the derelict ship and origins of the space jockeys and aliens.

This new movie looks to be a "for the fans" type of movie. Its most likely not going to be very good, but will offer a back story for the space jockey race. The space jockeys were masters of genetic engineering and, according to lore, harnessed the xenomorphs as a weapon. According to lore the derelict ship in Alien is a "bomber".

My guess is that this new movie will not have xenomorphs, will be about the space jockeys and will tie humanity's origins into the space jockeys.

Hah! Good to see that someone else here is still as excited for TDKR as I am! =)

In all seriousness, yeah, 2012 is looking killer so far. My list would be:
1. The Dark Knight Rises
2. The Hobbit Part 1
3. The Avengers
4. Brave
5. Prometheus
-and those are just the ones I know will be great. I think John Carter, The Hunger Games, and Rock of Ages all of the potential to be surprises. Perhaps Skyfall can bring James Bond back to greatness, as well! We'll just have to see how things play out.
*Edit* Oh, and Hollywood? If you screw up World War Z, we're through. Just so you know.

Would anyone want to see the Alien vs Predator vs TERMINATOR book turned into a movie? I enjoyed reading about the "Skynet War" that no one knew about until they downloaded a terminators memory.

let me say this, ridley scott is a better sci-fi director than James Cameron. I say this because he doesnt tell rehash stories, his movies are very excellent and original mixing practical effects with cgi properly, and is over all more awesome.

Prometheus looks awesome, sounds awesome, and probably will be awesome.

Also if it is an alien movie, ill still see it because the best alien was in fact Alien, the first one.
Aliens is over rated...and personally i find it annoying
Alien 3 is meh, but had moment
alien Resurrection is a guilty pleasure
AVP is shit and im glad the new predators movie came out because it did the series justice.

2012 is going to be the best year for movies in sci-fi and fantasy in a long time

also, does anyone think Ridley Scott could adapt a video game to the silver screen perfectly?
games like halo, a valve game, or other sci-fi game?
