Okay, so, I've tried to start a list of games for people to share that are easy to get a hold of and that have female protagonists but it's never really caught on in the thread I've done it in.

So. I'm now trying to make a topic where everyone can share games they've played on their PC that are cheap and/or not resource intensive and/or easy to download, and that have either female player characters and/or have good female characters.

Let us try to promote these examples to others so we can make some sort of positive influence on getting more games with female characters.

Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery. Although it's not easy to tell, the character you control is in fact a woman.

Aquaria. This one might be somewhat resource intensive but I don't have a PC optimized for gaming and it's run fine for me so take that as you will.

Saira. It's a nice puzzle/platformer game with really good ambiance.

Rosenkreuzstilette. It's basically a Megaman game but set in a fantasy setting and with an all female cast.

Recettear An Item Shop's Tale. I still unfortunately haven't found time to get back to this one but I've heard good things about it and from what I've played it's a good game.

To the Moon. Not much for gameplay but it's a good story and as a plus to my particular demographic, it involves aspies.

Bunny Must Die. A metroidvania game that can be really hard and is full of jokes.

Eryi's Action. A game that somewhat takes a page from I Wanna Be The Guy but isn't a jerk about it. The deaths are treated more like puzzles you need to figure out and they're more often done to elicit a laugh from you than to make you frustrated. It's also not NEARLY as hard as I Wanna Be The Guy.

Ib. A game about a girl that ends up in another world inside an art museum and tries to escape. A very good game with multiple endings.

Engage To Jabberwock. Not sure how to classify this one in terms of gameplay... it's a top down game but it involves shooting and danmakku a lot of times.

Mad Father. A very good horror title which has you playing as a young girl as the dead come back to life to kill her father for the experiments he performed on them.

The Witch's House. Holy crap... I won't say anything about this other than it's one of the more heart wrenching and horrifying games I've played in a long time.

Knytt Stories. Another kind of metroidvania game but it's more focused on just soaking in the world and the ambiance than the actual gameplay, but the gameplay isn't bad.

Iji. Still don't really like this game, it just didn't click with me due to the nature of how you get certain endings. But people really like it so... Ah, and it's a sidescroller/platformer/shooter.

The White Chamber. A horror adventure game with some very good visuals, I just recommend you turn off the voices.

Misao. Another horror game, and I believe it's made by the same person that made Mad Father. It's rather hard to recommend it as the main part of the game is just kind of okay but once you get to the epilogue part of the game it all suddenly gets waaaaay better.

Juniper's Knot. Not really a game but I'm adding it anyway because it's a great Visual Novel and it deserves more recognition. It's a very nice story about a boy and a fiend.

Blackwell series. Still haven't gotten around to this but it's an adventure game series staring a female protagonist and I hear good things about it.

Yume Nikki. Haven't been able to play this one because my computer doesn't like it but I've watched Let's Plays and it's really good food for thought about dreams and the meanings of them.

Phoenix Wright has Maya Fey, Fransizka von Karma, Kay Faraday, and Mia Fey (though her fanservice-y looks might be off putting to some) all of whom are a whole lot deeper than a love interest; in fact such a topic is rarely brought up.

One of my favorite games of all time has a female protagonist.

Okami.

Play the game and you'll see. Also, it's done right, as in, the gender of the protagonist has absolutely no significance whatsoever, they don't go out and say "hey, look at us, we made a game with a girl!", they're just like "oh btw, that's a girl" about 10 hours in the game and don't much revisit it.

Noitu Love 2 - no real story to talk bout here, but awesome game never the less. Bonus for some females, only incompetent character is only male character. Buy from www.konjak.org because all money goes to Konjak and I cant wait for him to finish The Iconoclast with another female protagonist.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dream - awesome platformer with Giana in main role. Great gameplay, great graphics, awesome music.

Are you looking for PC only?

If not you might wanna have a gander at this list started by OtherSideofSky.
Yes. It's easier to expect someone to have a PC than it is for them to have this or that console. I'm trying to make a list that's easy to recommend to anyone.

Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2 for Nintendo Gamecube.

Both have female protagonists, Katia in the first game and Tara in the second (a distant descendant of Katia)

I really love both of these games because I love collecting things in game (things like Pokemon annoy me because you literally cannot catch them all, without a cheat device) and I found the battle system to be really enjoyable though its very dated now. Even before Demons Souls Fromsoftware could do Atmosphere pretty well!

There's always The Longest Journey, and to a somewhat lesser extent its sequel Dreamfall.

I thought Bleed was pretty fun. It's a side scrolling shooter where you play as a girl named Wryn who has some bullet time powers and is trying to be the greatest hero in the world... By killing all the current greatest heroes.

99 Spirits - A game taking place in Feudal Japan that combines JRPG with word puzzles.

They Bleed Pixels - A fiendishly difficult platformer borrowing Lovecraftian aesthetics with brawling and environmental kills.

Fortune Summoners - High difficulty side scrolling action RPG with combo fighting mechanics.

Rokko-chan - Flash Megaman fan game with the protagonist gender flipped.

Err, Sanctum. Not much of a speaking protagonist, but still.
Can't think of any others apart from games with custom characters, and ones that have already been mentioned.

Not looking to derail this into a feminism thing, but that is actually quite shocking. I've got like 140 games.
